My favorite thing? 🤔 I heard something about Chrono Trigger months ago and was immediately interested. Some time later, I heard the name “Yasunori Mitsuda” and I was like “ok, ok, what?”. At that point as if I needed further motivation, it was immediately in my radar. Finally, I think it was a couple of weeks ago when I watched the documentary about the development and when I saw a some members of the team emotionally describing a couple of proud moments, it just was the cherry in top. And of course there’s all the rest. Beautiful pixelated world and characters, combat, quality of life, lighting, animation, etc. I’m really happy the reviews are so positive.
So yeah, that’s what I like about this game. I haven’t even play the demo. I didn’t want to to spoil any of it. I’m between jobs at the moment, but whenever I start the new one, I’ll immediately buy it 💪🏻

I’m 31 years old, have been on UA-cam literally over half of my life, consume an insane amount of content on UA-cam and SwitchUp is the first channel I’ve ever actually subscribed to. You gents and the content you put out is top quality and I truly enjoy every single video that comes out, even if its a review video on a game I know for a fact I’m not gonna play. I got back into gaming last year after a long hiatus and SwitchUp is hands down my favorite channel on all of UA-cam. Keep it up!
As for Sea of Stars, I’m most interested in exploring the environment and the story. RPGs are a hard sell for me about 80% of the time but due to primarily this channel’s coverage (and a few others), this is near the top of my ever growing wishlist.

I always appreciate a good sense of worldbuilding in my fiction - be it Sanderson's amazing Cosmere in books or the continent of Zemuria from the Trails series in games, so it's nice to hear that ample care was put into that.
That said, I'm probably most excited about the music. I didn't know it had such a wide variety, it'll be fun to see how they handled day/night transitions (also RIP Vinyl release oof).

While so much of this excellent study over one of the most important games in years, I most loved “Sound of the Sea,” as the soundtrack is given such an important view of what makes this game incredible. I love how each contributor is given their due credit for their work. I think sound in a game, especially an RPG, is crucial to the memories we carry with us after the credits roll at the end.

You have single handedly created my ridiculous backlog. I think if I play Nintendo Switch for the rest of my life I will never complete it.
Will be watching for a sale on flinthook! I am overwhelmed by the ability of games like Chrono Trigger, Golden Sun, The Messenger, and now Sea of Stars to make me FEEL a sense of scope with Pixel Art, Music, and “Lighting”. My friends and family have never been able to understand why I feel sucked into a good game with such a “simple” art style. I still can not explain how the real world melts around me and am able to fall into the screen. Happy to hear an underdog like me lives in this world (Garl). But most of the type of guy who hears way too often that I don’t live up to my “potential”.
Many things to Sabotage for the new adventure, and to SwitchUp’s for bringing light to it. You guys are still my number one UA-cam channel for gaming (with Nintendo Life being second).

Hello Mark, in my case I cannot detach both the art style and sound. To me, my most memorable game ever was Donkey Kong country. Even if it was a different mechanic and fighting style. Sea of Stars just unearth something from the past. It almost goes with the saying for a wedding. Something old, something borrowed and something new. The nostalgia sauce on this is heavy, but, to a point you crave it. The borrowed is all the influence from the games that inspired them to create this gem. To finalize the new. Just the amazing adventure they have put out with new characters that will be instantly recognizable on any comic/games-con says it all. I already replayed the demo twice just to feel the atmosphere it has. Thanks for the review!

I remember back in the day when I spent months saving pocket money to get myself a copy of The Secret of Mana. I had a review of it in a video game magazine I would look at every day until I had managed to save up for it. Back in the mid nineties, these huge worlds contained on a video game cartridge seemed impossible. The colour, the music, the characters. The Secret of Mana will always hold a special place.
Sea of Stars clearly has the dna of Mana, along with a lot of other games of that era. I have to say the visuals have to be my favourite element. That look fills me with a ton of nostalgia and takes my memory of an old JRPG and turns everything up to 11.
Thanks to the developers for all the hard work put into this game. It’s been a success and I can’t wait to play it.

  • @thescribblequeen

The visual style absolutely captures my interest, as well as the fact that this game's writers have a sense of humor! A lot of fantasy worlds have a habit of taking themselves too seriously, and it's wonderful to know that the whole "saving the world" aspect doesn't preclude these characters from having their best friend poke fun at them a little bit!

  • @zuzhi64
    @zuzhi64 Рік тому

I played Chained Echoes last year and that was a sneaky warm welcome back to retro rpg nostalgia of old.
However, playing Sea of Stars... I don't know what it is, there's something more of a familiarity and cosy feeling that immediately transported me back to being 9-12 years old - playing Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger.
Those years were really some of my best formative years in gaming, and I'm so glad I discovered (or rather my brother helped discover) JRPGs during the 16-bit golden era.
Oh, and to answer your question about my top favourite thing of the 5 elements? I would go for the MUSIC and SOUND, which I tend to generally lean on in most JRPGs and games.
Music and sound really are key to me in becoming fully immersed and have an emotional resonance throughout my gameplay.
Sea of Stars is very solid in this regard with a wide range of emotions from happy, to jovial, sadness, ominous, mysterious and straight-up catchy energetic battle music.
Absolute quality in my eyes (or ears in this case!).
Thanks for reading my long ramblings.
    Have a good one!

Now it’s hard to comment on a game I haven’t played yet, but it’s the humor that sets Sabotage’s games apart. I mean, Sea of Stars in particular absolutely knocked the art and ambiance and music into the stratosphere, but those are all cases of doing things well. What I mean is, no one else is doing humor the way these guys are-it’s an aspect basically unique to Sea of Stars and the Messenger. Just as much as this pixel art is signature here, so is the brand of humor. They walk that fine line of not taking themselves too seriously and yet being able to pull out the gravitas when it counts-it calls to mind several episodes of Scrubs or Futurama that way, and I salute them for it.

I think for me, growing up playing games like Grandia, Final Fantasy, Suikoden 2; those games all had that magic combination of 5 things; art, music, world-building, story and humour. I love how this game takes those qualities but makes them their own. It’s not copying what’s gone before, but building on it and making a game that couldn’t have existed on 90s hardware. The young RPG fan in me cannot wait to play this one.

What makes me drawn towards playing this game is its developers are self-aware of what they want to achieve. They are not replicating the "old" 8-bit era looks just for nostalgia, but they are redefining a new generation of pixel art gaming. Like what you've mentioned about the wrong premise of pixel art will be gone is being proven wrong that with its art style's limitations, they tend to show modern-day games that the medium still can innovate and has a lot more potential and a lot more to offer. And I really hope this becomes a trend in the future because 2d pixel art style is proven as timeless, and really requires players' imagination because everything is shown in less realistic manner compared to 3D games nowadays. 2D games brings us to an experience of like watching a cartoon/anime with exceptional storytelling with the reinforcement of great music to bring out the entire narrative very well.

I was brought back to playing Nintendo with my brother on a winter day sitting in the game room enjoying a cocoa and scone. I am 45 and the nostalgia is what keeps me coming back for more. You can't put a price on fond memories and this truly brings it out of you.

For me it's the art style. My love of JRPGs was cultivated in the 90s with games like Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire and the US versions of FF2 & FF3. The graphical fidelity really harkens back to that golden age of JRPGs but the extra attention to details such as the reflections in the water, real time shadows and dynamic lighting gives it a much appreciated modern twist.

As a single dad of two, I often find myself drawn to places that catch my attention, and that's precisely how I'd like to experience the game and what I like about the sea of stars - by visiting these enchanting fantasy locations and relieving that feeling of excitement just like the good old days of my childhood rpg games! And this is my reward for being a good dad

For me, it’s got to be the art style I adore the most about Sea of Stars. The mix of fantastic pixel art with modern lighting already draws me in, but the way everything looks just mesmerizes. Navigating around these immaculate environments looks fluid and feels satisfying. In the demo, the dungeon and boss fight in particular impress me. Clear attack animations for every character and enemy keep you on beat in the battle system, and the colors and lights of the dungeon are jaw-dropping. The Messenger was a definite favorite of mine, and Sea of Stars looks to have just as much charm and polish as that game had.

In a world that is always overtaken by complex groundbreaking games with 4K graphics and whatnot, I am so glad that there are still games that just ooze with that child-like joy that we often try to re-ignite. Sea of Stars is such a game!
As for my favourite element of the game, it has to be the music! It just captures the atmosphere perfectly, you can close your eyes and imagine you are actually in that location. Of course, the 2nd position would go to the art and combat. As I haven't played Chrono Trigger before, the concept of a more engaging turn based system felt so fresh and exciting for me.
I didn't know anything about The Messenger or Sabotage studios before, but seeing (and hearing) this gem of a game makes me feel like I could go back in time. Can't wait to experience this adventure for myself and I wish you all a most amazing time with it! Thank you guys for putting a spotlight on such awesome indie games, they certianly deserve our attention and support!

Since I was a young laddy music has been the glue that holds everything together for me. It’s one thing to see where you are but the music and sound design is what makes you feel like you are there and stays with you long after you’ve finished playing.
From what I’ve heard so far the OST is gorgeous so I would definitely say the music is what appeals to me the most because the hope is that one day I’ll hear a tune from Sea of stars or some kind of ambient noise that reminds me of the game and be able to reminisce on how fun it was to play this for the first time.

It's hard to not be drawn in by the visuals. It's like simultaneously a tribute to the classics while also evolving the way they looked. I don't think it's one of those "looks the way your memory thinks old games looked" kinda thing, they've brought something to the style with this quality and detail.

"The Sound of the Sea" is by far the most important part of the game to me. Music is always key in JRPGs and Sea of Stars nails it. It’s really hard picking a favorite part out of those five being portrayed. For me the one thing that is most important when it comes to video games, or basically anything else in life - your channel not excluded - is the love that people put into their work. That’s the reason why there is art on screen and not just some funky pixels hopping around. And the same reason goes for a good portion of humor in both the game and your channel. Which I appreciate a lot, so there you have it ❤ thanks guys and see you in the next episode

I LOVE Pixel art games. I play to escape reality so I don’t need my games to be lifelike to enjoy them. There’s a lot of charm in pixel art. Not to mention making pixel art games so beautiful that they can compete with newer games with beautiful graphics. But my favorite element is story. I’ve played plenty of beautiful games that i never finished because the story just didn’t keep me excited and wanting to dive back into it. If you have a mix of all elements, story, music, art style, settings, graphics and a team that truly and clearly cares about their game- you have a masterpiece. My vote has been for Octopath Traveler 2 and I’ve felt a void in my gaming since I finished it- and I hope this game could fill that. ❤
Happy for you guys and oddly proud lol. Awesome team to work with and I trust you guys’ reviews.

Honestly, I think a clear story is what I'm looking for in RPGs now. Some of my favorite games have incredible stories, but they don't try to be too smart or complex just for the sake or it. I think that's what makes Chrono Trigger so memorable. The story is pretty simple, but the characters and interactions are deep. Looking forward to trying Sea of Stars once I get my fix of Starfield!

I'm a sucker for 16-bit style animation and aesthetics. I grew up playing games like Chrono Triggger, Final Fantasy 6, and Breath of Fire, which act as inspiration for this game. And the music just adds to the overall feel of the game. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, and it gives you that warm, tingling feeling in your soul. It reminds you of simpler days when the world was less complicated.
