What makes US Precision Guided Missiles “FLOP” In Ukraine?
Вставка

- In the midst of ongoing conflict, Ukrainian forces are leveraging US-supplied glide bombs to their advantage. This video delves into the use of two distinct glide bombs: the GLSDB (Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb) and the JDAM-ER (Joint Direct Attack Munition-Extended Range). However, these American-made guided weapons are facing challenges due to Russia's electronic interference, impacting their precision and effectiveness.
Despite the initial success of the HIMARS system in Ukraine's counteroffensive in September 2022, recent reports suggest that Russian electronic jammers have disrupted the system's GPS-guided targeting, leading to missed targets. The stakes are high as Ukraine heavily relies on HIMARS to target Russian logistical and military infrastructure.
The video also explores the impact of jamming interference on the operational effectiveness of the JDAM-ER. Despite anti-jamming enhancements, Russia's advanced electronic warfare systems are influencing the flight path of these intelligent weapons.
This video provides an in-depth analysis of the ongoing electronic warfare and the countermeasures being developed. It highlights the need for continuous innovation and adaptation in the face of evolving warfare tactics. Watch now to understand the intricate dynamics of modern warfare.

To be fair, almost every weapon system ever created, has been followed by something to counter it! It's a cycle that's been played out for thousands of years!
Finally, an honest and correct opinion. This channel is no different vs. other channels. They are all selling a viewpoint for their own reasons.
That is very fair. There is a lifespan for any weapon to be useful. Counter measures will always develop. That's the nature of war.
Yup. However Russia was first to adapt and in other areas like cheap drones as welll with massive production scaling up, while NATO is coming to realise they prepared for the wrong future war and only has expensive obsolete equipment and due to being democracies everyone will debate for a decade or two before they decide to build cheap mass produced swarms etc which frankly doesnt put money in shareholders accounts. 20 000$ drones or 50 million dollar drones which one makes shareholders happy. Ukraine is screwed.
It's possible that the US has ways to burn through the Russian countermeasures, but aren't using them in Ukraine to not show all of our capabilities. If that's not the case, it's still good for the US to find out about the issues now rather than if we find ourselves in a conflict of our own.
not the Russian weapons. we know its much more superior to Western crap weapons which is only Overprice cause of corruption and watnot unlike the Russian ones which we know is honest about its capabilities and price.
What's striking is the speed with which Russia develops countermeasures. Their UAV development is moving ahead by leaps and bounds. Hope you'll make a video about their uav r&d.
😂
A good observation! It's key to Russia's past victories & also why it takes them 2-3yrs to get their sh*t together. "Out-there" tech ideas that would seem like too wasteful or risky at peace time, get green-lit & fast-tracked; officers who are nobody's nephews get promoted (often skipping ranks) on merit. So it's not that there was anything wrong with Napoleon's or Hitler's plans for Russia - it's just 2-3yrs in, they'd found themselves up against an utterly different country vs the one they'd studied and invaded.

The Russian military is quite good at anything that requires high-level technology and skilled operators (especially electronic warfare), but is not great at the basics (eg: unit-level communication, logistics). This is why their jamming systems are highly-advanced and effective, but their frontline units sometimes have inadequate equipment.
They are not "Floping" they just have reduced effect due to not fighting impoverished goat herders. Both Russian and American rocket weapons are very effective otherwise.

I am surprised that a newer HARM missile has not been deployed. A device emitting that much EMF energy would stand out like a road flare in the night for a drone to home in on.
They haven't been given any that are ground-launchable at these kinds of sites, and don't have any of their own. They were sent a few aircraft HARM weapons starting in 2022, but these probably only are sent after SAM sites, their intended targets. @@ProfessorJayTee True however, the Ukrainians seem to be a pretty resourceful lot. I wonder how much time it will take them to create their own countermeasure for this countermeasure? As a 5 star armchair general that knows next to nothing...my best guess is that long range anti-radiation munitions cost more than the jammers. Whenever you see the multi piece Russian EWAR units the actual emitter is just a brute force antenna sitting on a practically civilian truck.
Worse these units are usually babysat by counter artillery microphones and track radars that will trace the source of the attack and pound it with conventional artillery.
If all that wasn't enough, the emitters can just....turn off. Leaving the cheaper/older HARM's proverbially in the dark. (apparently the new stuff has back up acquisition systems but its clearly not all that effective)

Pff....no chance. Their initial wave of air and missile attacks would be the only they could launch as Russia would effectively rain fire on all airfields and ships that are close enough to Russia to be used against her.
And, as we have seen many times during the last 1.5 years....russian (even late soviet) air defense systems kick ass, so that combined air and missile attack would be FAR less effective than it was against 3rd rate iraqi or libyan air defenses.

It is thanks to idiots like you in NATO military , underestimating always Russia ,that the Russian military have been able to adapt and even surpass NATO in their own technology. We have been told almost every month of a "new game changing weapon" and it never materialize. Russia finds a way to counter it. The lastest NATO embarrassment was not how easily Russia destroy NATO armored colums , forcing most ukraine military to go on foot .. to prevent their armor from being destroyed. But the disasters that NATO suffered when recently Russia jammed one of your Storm shadow "game changing" super stealthy missile by capturing it almost intact . What people call "Russia jamming" , is a lot more than just confusing Enemy communications as you claim. Russia Electronic warfare ,that is a much more closer to what really happens , can completely fry NATO electronics , Disable missiles , Drones and even Disable Satellites in Space from NATO by physically burning its electronics , and not limited to electronics but also Optics. Russian super long range lasers from moscow can hit your satellites too 30k in space and damage its Optics and they have laser mobile trucks to break the optics of NATO drones and missiles too . Like those KA-52 upgraded hellicopters can do , that during the first day of invasion in Ukraine , was fired 19 stinger missiles in waves , and almost all of them ,minus one was countered by Russian laser system. So think about that for a second.. Collective NATO gave Ukraine up to 25,000 manpads ,to shutdown planes , drones and hellicopters , Stinger missiles in the thousands ,and british ones too and from other manpads too ,and Russia have not lost 25,000 aircraft in Ukraine . If that was the case they will be without an airforce already , since the Russian airforce doesn't have more than 2000 aircraft.
As a matter of fact Russia have not lost a single Lancer Kamikazi drone to manpads or any airdefense. Ukraine not even report a success against them and only complain about them ,destroying their NATO tanks and light armor again and again with impunity. The only problem Russia military face in the war is not in equipment capabilities , but in equipment quantity. That they have not enough of drones to cope with the needs of the army that the conflict demands. And that neither have enough satellites in space to spy on Ukraine positions 24 hours a day.
Russia depends on just 4-6 satellites in space to have a very close view from space to the ground. NATO and allies being a collective of 30++ nations ,they all helping Ukraine in the other hand with Hundreds of satellites they have. SO even when Russia is just 1 nation and fighting a coalition of 30 NATO countries , they are doing an amazing job , holding back Ukraine ,even with s uch massive help from NATO.

Who would have thought, American weapons aren't as great as they're touted to be? Kinda makes you wonder. Of course people will say these aren't the best the US has, but they were considered pretty frikin' awesome prior to being countered.
Ya and the stuff we are holding back is super expensive and we have few of.
This has been the result of decades of a carefully-crafted framework to maintain the "US exceptionalism" myth. It has held up to date only because the US has always pitted itself against weaker, less well-equipped nations down to the level of local farmers dressed in bedsheets with only AKs, RPGs and IEDs for weapons, no AA and no airspace dominance.
Suddenly, the US has discovered that while it has been stressing over which toilets men can use, should they or shouldn't they have a transgender Admiral, and "equity" statistics in the services, Russia has been planning for a day some unspecified time in the future when the US and the Ne0-N@zis would have another go at them.
The US has long promoted the conflation of the USSR with the Russian Federation, and that both are symbolic of primitivism and backwardness, and of course this is mostly for the benefit of the largely ignorant US citizens who have no idea where half these countries are.
On the contrary, Russia is credited with many people who are deeply philosophical, deep thinkers and excellent at design, medical and technical subjects and many other issues.
Don't forget that Russia put the first satellite, first man (Yuri Gagarin in 1961), and first woman (Valentina Tereshkova in 1963 ) into space. The US finally got their first woman into space 20 years later (Sally Ride in 1983). They also put the first landers onto Venus.
And let's not forget their composers, dancers and writers.
The Russians also maintain a solid position in the world Chess rankings. Their aircraft design has been excellent to novel and they have never feared exploring radical designs, including the Ekranoplan, even under the constraints of Sovietism and now moreso under the relative freedoms of the Federation.
They have one other attribute. They are bloody tough, stoic and strongly nationalistic. I've worked with them at high altitudes and latitudes and never saw a people less fazed by ultra-low temperatures down as low as -70C.
The US will find out just how this dedication to their survival works out if they continue to mess with them.
Regardless of the REASONs, this is good intel for US arms developers, and war planners to take into account. The bigger question would have been have we seen this weakness demonstrated before, and did we IGNORE it? Crap, the concept of interfering with GPS is as old as GPS. The concept of spoofing navigational aides are older than that. VOR, ILS have been targeted before.
Like stated in the video, "it's like a game of chess"... tactically. Strategically, it's like a game of cards. Early in the war, everyone was wondering where the hell all the Russian military capability is. At every turn, each sides pulls a stronger card and puts it on the table. Informative. One of the few, now a days, we find in the internet.
India should purchase in bulk these jamming systems and have to learn from them in developing similar at cheaper cost and in bulk.
this is a real requirements for the possible scalable drone attacks from Pakistan region
You might want to think about that. India must be worried about the tanks they bought from Russia. Russia has lost over 4,000 tanks and 8,000 APV because of their flawed design. They have lost so many tanks they now have less than Ukraine - and many of those are now old T55s that date back almost to WW2. They should be in a museum - not putting their crews in danger.
But the same flawed Russian tanks that have been death traps in Ukraine make up the backbone of the Indian army. Meanwhile, Pakistan has the much more capable Chinese designed tanks.
Pakistan must be looking at India’s flawed Russian tanks and rubbing their hands with pleasure! I wonder if India is thinking about getting rid of the Russian rubbish tanks they have and getting something as good as the excellent Pakistani tanks?
The west had a lot of experience fighting the mujahideen in Afghanistan who are mostly equipped with only AK-47 and no jammers like what the Russian have. Thus their weapons are effective in Afghanistan but not in Ukraine as Russian are using many new modern weapon that are alien to the west.

As there are special anti radar weapons, it is just a matter of time those are adapted to hit powerful jammers - hence those are not cheap and further take out a lot of expensive weapons, I see the day, jamming becomes extremely dangerous. Those jamming systems are a very juicy target for a HARM strike. The the signals they emit to jam a GPS guided munition are the same signals that help a HARM locate the target.

I believe the biggest difference is the US military industry is there for profit, the Russian military Industry is there to protect their country
The Ruzzian industry is there for the GRIFT!
The Russians are trying to take away something that is not theirs. That's called strong-arm theft. If Western weapons developers make a profit in the process of Western societies sticking up for what's fair, then good for them. They deserve it. Weapons development on anybody's side is a horrible waste of resources. In the meantime, he/she who has the best (non-nuclear) weapons wins.
There are reports of corruption in Russian military.
This way Russia is perhaps one step to develop not only jamming system but guiding the launched missile back to where it is coming from.
Perhaps jamming emissions can be tracked to their source, which can be neutraized by other means?
enemy counter measures and dropping weapons outside of their optimum usage parameters isn't a failure of the weapons, but usually, miss-application by the users.
They need guidance system which uses American _and_ Russian GPS signals, and will switch over to GLONASS if there is a big discrepancy between the two.
Inertial guidance would be a nice addition, but would probably be too expensive for a relatively cheap expendable munition.

Wouldn't the jammers be vulnerable to HARM missiles? (designed to go after RADAR).
Is this why we're seeing himars being used at targets much closer to the front lines where Russian EW systems are less likely to be
Imagine how easy it would be to track THAT powerful signal-and kill those trucks
How? Any drone or guided missile will miss and they're well protected with anti missiles themselves. Checkmate.
We’re not going to give away all our sophisticated secrets away here!
A passive RF homing guidance kit should be introduced for a dedicated anti-radiation version of the JDAM or for dedicated combat UAVs to strike these mobile tactical GPS jammers. Given their high power output, they should be easy targets. HARM missiles would do the trick, but they are too rare and precious and should be reserved for higher value targets such as SAM fire control radars or major command and communication centers.
Thats why Ukraine will lose. Expensive few in supply wonder weapons vs mass produced cheap swarms and other cheap innovations. The US prepared for a future war that just isnt what is. The US will take years to change their force and weapon structure. Russia is already adapted.
Tell Biden.....he don't know that!!! Mr Bedroom Genius.....

Why not use Inertial guidance when the GPS signal gets scrambled through the flight?
It is interesting, in "selling period", when Himars and others started to come to Ukraine, nobody from youtube experts mentioned about jamming system penetration abilities and possible issues. It is understandable - seller is going to sell, not to make complete analyses of all goods and bads

When a jammer electronically yells to any GPS guided missile or bomb, in the same moment the jammer tells all its enemies in its surroundings an not ingorable "please kill me" message.
May be i'm too naive and it may not be so easy to fullfill this plea.

Why haven't anti-radiation missiles and other anti electronic counter measures allowed for the erosion of these Russian capabilities? One would think that it would be easy to force the Russians into a use-it-and-lose-it conundrum: Fire off a HiMARS, force them to either let it hit its target or jam it and light up their jammer to be destroyed in turn.

Have you heard of microwave decoys? Those decoys would look like legitimate targets to those anti-radiation missiles.
This does not change the fact that people were killed. People were killed by weapons from which they did not want to take. Poroshenko refused in the fall of the seventeenth at the UN. On the third day after his refusal, a warehouse with a volume of one billion, valued in green currency, caught fire near the city of Balakleya. It was the largest warehouse in Ukraine of MLRS missiles, one of the largest in Europe. Vinnytsia a similar event occurred in half a year. After that, Poroshenko left his autograph where he was pointed with a finger, untied his hands for further escalation of the conflict (a conflict due to the greed of the heir to an elderly lawyer highly placed by her) in the death of hundreds of thousands of people.
If you liken the war on jamming technologies to the game of chest, then Russia has far more chest grandmasters than the west.
So why all those jamming stations weren't hid by ARM yet? It's sitting there, transmitting signal, should be relatively easy to destroy.
All this ish is designed to kill dudes in flipflops... not a serious enemy. But even than, it couldnt defeat dudes in flipflops too lol
Tell this to the thousands of mothers of dismembered and eviscerated Russian conscripts who have fallen to these "ineffective even against dudes in flip flops" HIMARS. I guess those mothers can rest assured knowing their sons were never considered of a "serious enemy" as they indeed perished, right? 🤔
HIMARS is a devastating weapons system, which is why Moscow made a mighty stink when they were delivered to Ukraine months ago (and why they're incredibly pissed about the addition of the ATACMS being sent with its 6-fold range and much larger warhead of those being used currently). They said it would "cross a red line". Why complain if they are such garbage?
Many have learned the hard way that it's incredibly foolish to underestimate your enemy, his weapons and capabilities. Give your enemy more credit than they deserve and be pleasantly surprised after victory. After all, this is what the Yanks have done for decades and have recently been pleasantly amused at the true state of Russia's military readiness.
I'm curious about the accuracy of this report or the effectiveness of the Russian jamming. Most of these weapons are supposed to function in GPS denied environments. That is, once the location of the target is known, the inertial guidance system which does not rely on external signals would still allow the bomb to hit its target with better accuracy than an unguided bomb. Maybe it won't be as accurate with GPS updates, but it should still be pretty accurate. Very curious indeed. 🤔
probably, on fixed infra targets, might be very difficult to jam INS on HIMARS... But on gravity bombs, GPS is completely necessary.
The Jamming system can also give false locations. That is, it deceives the GPS receiver by giving it a wrong path so the bomb or rocket doesn't turn on its initial guidance system.
GPS is used for target acquisitions as well. Russians are masters of EW. I am sure they still keep loots of aces up their collective sleeve. They also working on updating their equipment and firmware to keep up with every development. Never mind that they have a lot of spies planted in and around Ukraine. This is why they never targeted Zelensky, because they know everything that is going on Around him. New face would cause them to look and recruit new assets. Another thing, if you develop these things, you definitely know the methods how it works. So even videos of "precision ammunition" can give an expert a lot of information. I used to know one ex Soviet Jew physicist, who after seeing footage from first shots in Iraq, the Shock and Awe, he called Pentagon and told them what they are doing wrong.
I do believe many of these munitions, especially the HIMARS, as you say have internal inertial navigation that continue the missile to target. I agree, it's curious and often I wonder if the effectiveness is being downplayed by the Western media as to mitigate antagonizing Russia so they are less likely to have another round of mobilizations or do something rash, like target schools, maternity wards, hospitals, cultural centers, civilian train stations, kinder gardens, playgrounds, etc... again.
What's a Him-ars? Is is anything like a High-mars?
I wounder why the jamming is more effective know? They had jamming equipment at the front early in the war. Could it be that they have given up to use their own GPS equipment, not flying so much? There where an photo from the cockpit of an Russian jet fighter with an civilian GPS that must have been easy to jam.
That is why the U.S. has the E/A 18 Growlers for these types of scenarios. Something that the Ukrainians do not and will never have, unfortunately.
Yeah that's why the west is slowly building up Ukraine's capabilities with older stockpiles of weapons. If they can't use the offensive weapons to there full capabilities there's no point in giving them the latest and greatest.
The west afraid that it will become useless again😂😂😂
@@tommygun5038 keep in mind that the so called 'game changers' are in the latest and greatest categories since they were called state of the art weapons that Russia won't be able to counter because they are too advanced, and will change the battlefield, but then these were neutralized and destroyed by Russia, 'game changer' after 'game changer'. So far what we learned, not from propaganda but facts on the ground, the hard way, that no matter whatever new stuff is being sent that is assured to be invincible, effective for certain type of scenarios, etc. it will be neutralized and destroyed by Russia, some may pose a bit of a problem at the beginning but Russia will adapt and make it ineffective. What is interesting, perhaps funny, is that at first 'game changers' were called grandiose state of the art, too advanced for Russia, etc. then after being neutralized are now called part of old stockpiles of weapons, similar with Bakhmut which was called strategic place then after being liberated by Russia the narrative changed to of no strategic importance; such level of denial.

Almost all Russian jammers have ghost radar signal antennas, that's why you don't hear about antiradiation misile effectiveness in this conflict.
Shouldn’t the jammers be easy targets? They are broadcasting a strong signal over a wide frequency range.
Well not exaclty easy since gps usually uses lower frequencies than radar frequency its radio for gps so anyways to jamm gps you use lower frequency jammers which are harder to detect and target with conventional harm platforms and frequency hopping proper use of clutter makes it even harder
