While Steve mourned the death of 'the love of his life', after healing from shin cancer & previously unknown hip degeneration surgery, the band used the time to release their own projects. Largely semi-successful, out of money- one under pressure paying alimony to 4 wives, Jon & NS took to the courts suing to oust Steve so they could use his music, the name/music of Journey, which was contractually owned outright by all three. In that court settlement SP receives monies each time Journey/SP songs are used. Steve moved on, even begged Jon & NS to not to "break the rock" - meaning do anything you want (instead of what you've hated doing- like the 'power love songs, hits') go do what you love- fusion, rock,,,, just 'don't damage Journey'! They eventually reverted to mostly Journey chart hits- using a serious of frontmen. After a list of subs, they found a kid that had been 'covering Journey music of his idol' for years in various Asian Karaoke clubs, so Arnel could handle most of Steve's music. Arnel had even perfectly copied Perry's complete stage presence, running from stage left to right, looks, dress, hair, body mannerisms, singing style- phrasing, enunciations, etc., etc., to a T!. NS, now the 'frontman' in charge can (continue doing what he hated) - tour small clubs, gaming venues, hooking up with other former A-list bands. After SP's several surgeries, he put out new music, re-mixing music and has lead a private life - always skipping over details of the heartbreaking breakup in true, typical SP style during his many interviews over the years, thereby still 'protecting the stone'. UPDATE: Earlier this 2024 year, Steve announced having just signed a new contract to release new material! Watch for it Steve Perry fans!
Steve Perry is the best! I continue to listen to his Journey music and all his solo music as well as his collaborations with the High Kings, Clannad, Mindi Abair, WE Are the World and Dolly Parton. HE could sing the dictionary and I would listen to it. I don't care that his voice has aged to me it is still full of the passion and soul that makes him the GOAT and my favorite singer! Journey has replaced him but they cannot remove his legacy. I respect all the singers that have tried to fill his shoes. They were all good but IMO none were great like Steve! That's why people are still listening to him 30+ years later. When you hear Steve's iconic voice you know its him regardless of the years.

Steve Perry was and still is one of the best voices to ever hit the musical world. Say what you will about his personal choices but at the end of the day, there is no disputing his signature sound. At 75 years old, he can still actively belt it out not to mention, he seems like a hell of a nice guy. To all the nay sayers and arm chair critics who just cant understand why Steve left Journey, it makes no difference. He did what he felt he needed to do. He owes nobody. Steve Perry gave a lot of years to making great music for countless millions to enjoy. I for one would like to meet him just to say thanks for everything.

@@340rps There's a lot of difference. Vocal range for one, No one has Steve's 8 octave range. Try listening to just the voice- not the music, tune, as many vocal coaches on uTube have. Worth the listen!
I believe Steve Perry is the best vocalist of all who have sung with the band. But his contribution goes much deeper. Almost all of the classic Journey songs that form the set list of modern Journey shows, Were written or co-written by Steve. Their continued success is due in large part to his legacy.

And one of his best friends, Phil Lynott, had died of an excess of Sex, Drugs, and Rock n Roll. But he was never given time to grieve, he had to get back to work. So he burned out.

Steve Perry is a huge part of my childhood being born in the 1980s. My dad played a lot of Journey on vinyl when i was a little girl. His voice is so powerful and really stands out. Amazing vocal talent. I remember watching Journey recently perform before the Formula 1 race not long ago and im sorry but the other guy will never compare to him. I was in love with Steve Perry from the get go. I followed everything JOURNEY & had a massive cardboard cutout of the Journey logo artwork on one of their album covers. It fit perfect across the entire back windshield of my car. The owner of a record store in Memphis gave it to me. It had been a display for their latest album at the time. The video for Separate Ways was shot in New Orleans at a boat dock. I went to watch the making of the video & hung out with them for awhile. This was when Jonathon Cain had replaced Greg on keyboards. Things like that would never happen today & that's a shame.
I learned so much about Steve Perry from this. I am a die hard Perry fan, in any form. I have all this odd albums released over the years and would jump at a chance to hear him again. His voice is iconic. John Bon Jovi got that right.

You sure are lucky 5 times is great. I seen Journey in the early 2000's in Baltimore with a replacement singer, Steve's voice is the greatest but I have to say the replacement wasn't too bad. But Steve Perry is great and I love him.

Steve is in the Hall of Fame as singer/writer for Journey. As well as Songwriters HoF not to mention many other awards/Grammy/Star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood. He's 'The Voice' all of which was resented by the other two! So - the breakup! AND look for new music soon:)!

Steve Perry is a huge part of my childhood being born in the 1980s. My dad played a lot of Journey on vinyl when i was a little girl. His voice is so powerful and really stands out. Amazing vocal talent. I remember watching Journey recently perform before the Formula 1 race not long ago and im sorry but the other guy will never compare to him. I will forever always remain a Steve Perry fan❤

I was in love with Steve Perry from the get go. I followed everything JOURNEY & had a massive cardboard cutout of the Journey logo artwork on one of their album covers. It fit perfect across the entire back windshield of my car. The owner of a record store in Memphis gave it to me. It had been a display for their latest album at the time. The video for Separate Ways was shot in New Orleans at a boat dock. I went to watch the making of the video & hung out with them for awhile. This was when Jonathon Cain had replaced Greg on keyboards. Things like that would never happen today & that's a shame.
I learned so much about Steve Perry from this. I am a die hard Perry fan, in any form. I have all this odd albums released over the years and would jump at a chance to hear him again. His voice is iconic. John Bon Jovi got that right.
