Licks aren't mechanical. They are just great ideas that want to be implemented. Great artists and players steal from gteat artists and players. I understand that being a great musician means to be original which is true, but licks and passages are there for a reason to learn and maybe even change to a certain feeling or liking.

Usually what i hear is something that goes with a riff (you hear it you want to play it immediately) If I can’t play it immediately, STOP (figure out what I’m hearing). It wasn’t until could learn songs by ear not just Black Sabbath either it was enduring years later when I could play Boston, Styx, stuff I couldn’t play for years. Embarrassing parts riff from Led Zeppelin songs. UA-cam made me better I could figure watching fingers by that time. But classic rock 80s neo classical is easier compared to modern guitarist like polyphia and buried alive. They have takin guitar skills way up another notch than someone like Marty Friedman 80s guitarist. The absolute worst

This just highlights how talented vocalists are... in the sense that they have to create a note from scratch rather than a lot of instrumentalists. What im saying is to sing a G note singers really manufacture it with their vocal chord, or muscles in their voice box. But us guitar players even at the learning stage we have the convenience of puting our finger on the e string ..third fret to produce the G note as long as the string is in standatd tuning. That does not give us much creativity. But guitarists that tend to sing or think about melodies in their head are more succesful as they are able to reproduce those melodies on the guitar.
