The A-10 was a good comparison. The way the Y-wing was utilized was closer to the mission profiles of the F-111 from the closing of the Cold War - to penetrate contested airspace under the combat air patrol (CAP) to neutralize ground targets deeper into hostile territory, where it could deploy a nuclear weapon. An A-10 was designed to bring the fight at the edge of hostile territory, to support ground troops who are decreasing hostile territory.

It's funny, throughout the whole video, the Y-Wing's story made me think about the A-10 history especially the way it got ripped by some Air Force generals but loved by the troops on the ground.
I Love the subtle Vibe of Allen presenting Himself as if He’s in Universe Like Garand Thumb reviewing Halo guns like He’s an in Universe Veteran It’s that exact Perfect kinda Tact Vibe that make’s It
I like the Y-Wing, it fits the rebellion very nice. It can defeat things many times its size, it refuses to die itself, and in doubt it has the ability to just... Run away. Jump into Hyperspace. Scatter so that it is literally not worth it for the empire to follow because leaving wherever you are stationed to catch one or two Ys while the other ten that jumped in different directions do who-knows-what? Y-Wings are damn Roaches.
I remember being so hyped to fly the Y-wing in the first rogue squadron. Lived up to the hype as well: super tanky and those bombs just shredded ground targets(they also regenerated over time in those games lol, unlike the rather useless proton torps.)
The Y-wing reminds me of the A-10. It has constantly been on the chopping block by military brass in favor of mire "up-to-date" and versatile aircraft. However, it is so effective and beloved by boots on the ground, that it's still around and much more effective than its supposed replacement...
It's funny, though. I was talking the other day about how it can be good to just ignore the meta, becuase sometimes it pays off. This sounds like one of those times.
In the X-wing, the pilots wore a 'plastic orange visor' I believe it s HUD up Display. There is plenty of criticism of fighter design, specifically pilot visibility. well when your HUDs give you unlimited vision, you usually don't need to look outside. remember the line 'pick up your visual scanning' that's when the pilot vision is a factor.
In my humble opinion, I feel the fans want focused passion that shows the heart of a true fan. Big budgets and even head knowledge of SW is not enough. Special effects and 'member berries' aren't either. We want series and movies made with a respect and understanding of the universe and the level of focus of Lucas and some of the better writers that succeeded. I've seen several very well made fan films that were good not because of the special effects, big budget or great acting, but because those making it had a great love and passion for SW. For example, Star Wars Theory's 'Vader II - Shards of the Past'. You could see the love for SW in it. Forget being political correct, forget how many of specific groups of people need to be in a series, forget inclusiveness and making statements about society. Forget trying to stand out as different. Just make the damned content, and -- VERY importantly-- PUT IT OUT QUICKLY! It is absolutely stupid to have to wait 3 or 4 years for a second season of something. If the fans love a series, get going on season 2 immediately! In the old days, series were put out each year, not every half decade. Even advanced series with special effects should come out in at least 2 years time. Don't juggle around 4 or 5 series and movies and make everyone wait their turn. Stick with one or two and get to it! I'm thrilled that Andor season 2 got into production within a month of season 1 ending. That should be the norm, not the exception. Don't worry about getting some slick writer or producer, get people that love SW and understand the dynamics of the universe and let them write. Look at and respect what the fans are saying on-line. Even if they don't like your ideas. You can easily tell when a series is done by someone who 'gets' SW versus someone just trying to make money or notoriety by their effort. I'll take a well made fan fiction short, done with love and respect for SW any day over a 180 million dollar pile of crap done by a person more focused on making statements about society.
Many years ago, when I got one of my first DOS computers, the very first game I bought was X-Wing. On floppy discs. When I started playing the missions I was initially disappointed with the number of missions that used a Y-Wing. "The game is called _X-Wing_ fercryinoutloud! Why am I in a Y-Wing. Again. But when you fly those missions, you begin to appreciate the Y-Wing, and not only what it could do, but what it could absorb in punishment.

The Y-Wing in my youth wasn't a catchy ship. But then I learned about the North American Rockwell OV-10 Bronco, amazing plane, and with its sexy twin-boom configuration, this starfighter looks closer to it than the A-10 does. In my mind when Papa Bronco mated with Mama Warthog they had the Y-Wing. But then again we have some other great twin-boom warplanes like the P-38, which is probably what Lucas Arts based this space-fighter on. Still, the OV-10 Bronco has been brought back to service, just like the Y-Wing it seems to be useful again and again.
I love Y-Wings. In one of the vehicle breakdowns of the Y-Wing, because of their age, and maintenance needs, stripping that armor off and hodge podging things together to keep them operational is crazy. As an aircraft mechanic, probably a nightmare in certain instances. You couldn't look at one and know for sure that it would work on the one you are currently trying to fix. Definitely makes things difficult for mechanics. Pretty common when you have issues to use another as reference, and these mechanics just can't do that. Having most panels removed, helps with weight, but also helps seeing whatever you're trying to fix.
I loved the y-wing a lot more than the X-wing. The first time I saw it, in new hope all I could think was that is a battle scared veteran getting the job done. And with later media and many years with the various table top rpgs, and video games I loved it more. It was more akin to the grunt that does most of the work, while the officers get all the credit.
WWII in space again. WWII fighter design started out with maneuverability optimized fighters like the Japanese Zero. The BF-109 could maneuver well enough, but was out turned by the Spitfire. But this maneuverability was gained at the cost of protection in the case of the Zero and at the cost of range in the case of the BF-109. Towards the end of WWII, pretty much all sides were going for more performance, more robustness/protection, and more firepower. The P-47 Thunderbolt was basically Republic taking one of their earlier designs and mating it to the widely available huge Pratt & Whitney radial engine. That was probably one of the inspirations for this narrative in the video.
Y wings really remind me of the F111. At first nobody wanted it but they soon loved it, served longer then anyone though it would and in the end they had to be held together with scraps but still performed beautifully
The Y-wing is easily my favorite fighter-bomber. Reminds me of the British hurricanes. Durable as hell and able to carry a payload that'd make an EOD specialist blush
@@RennmausG0ttes It was actually based on the F-105D Thunderchief, as the Original Star Wars was heavily based on Vietnam (The X-Wing is similar to the F-4, while the TIE Fighter is an obvious MiG-21 allegory)
I have to imagine what CEC would have done with the quick turnaround fighter-bomber contract. "Is this just a stripped-down YT-series chassis with extra armor and the cargo bays converted to magazines?" "Maaaaaaaaaaaaaybe." "Wait, isn't this the same design the pirate lord Goraag used in his Mid-Rim fleet?" "Corellian Engineering Corporation bears no legal responsibility for modifications made by the end user and *if* it is the same design but professionally refined they did not obtain proper intellectual property protections."
In Legends the most numerous fighters in the Rebellion were the Y-Wings. They were used to capture ships, provide support for ground troops, provide escort for VIPs and take out Star Destroyers. It’s the hero ship that doesn’t get enough respect as it was more valuable than the CR90 and EF76.
Meh. Y-Wing was a workable stop-gap until the far better B-Wing came along. ;) Thanks for this; one of the things that makes Star Wars special is all the crazy details like this.
The Y-Wing has always been one of my favorite Star Wars ships. What at first looks like a clunky and sluggish brick turns out to be a clunky sluggish brick with a bajillion proton torpedoes that can rip an ISD a new facehole at a tiny fraction of the commitment. And, in a pinch, it's not like it's totally defenseless in a dogfight, either. It's kind of a brick but its good shields and armor (despite Rebel modifications) mean that it can take a more patient approach until it can find a shot with its powerful nose-mounted lasers. The A-10 comparison is spot-on. Except instead of the legendary brrt cannon you've got a totally disproportionate missile barrage- which is also like the A-10 but in a much more exaggerated sense. I wouldn't be too surprised if the A-10 influenced George Lucas in any way- given the plane was 5 years old at the time of Episode IV.
I'd say it's more like the republics version of the F-4 Phantom. Like the Phantom it was ordered from an esteblished medium(ish) manufacturer for a quick and simple design (The Phantom originally was "just" and F-3h with a 2nd engine), that got the job done easily but very effectively. Like the Phantom the Y-Wing handled like a pig, was one of the biggest fighters of its time but being incredebly ragged and combat effective, being used for decades after its development (there are still airforces flying the F-4, South Korea retired their fleet about a month ago, serving over half a century in their airforce)
One criminally underrated feature of the Y-Wing is that, unlike most other fighters, the shape of its fuselage lends itself to shark-mouth nose art. Even the legendary X-Wing struggles in this aspect.

Koensayr Chief Engineer/CEO, when reading the requirement spec for a new Fleet Fighter-Bomber: "Oh hell, we can slap together some of the small freighter components, some T-bracket strut and wrap it in duralloy and it'll do the job. Get a team on this, I want a prototype by next week."

The Y-Wing was always my favorite since I saw the first Star Wars movie in the theater back in the '70s.
The Y-wing, the F-4 Phantom and the P-47 Thunderbolt are all underrated fighter/bombers.
A review of the ships of the Sith Empire is needed. And yes, that includes the Fury-class Imperial Interceptor.
Really like that you mention the A-10 Thunderbolt II as a comparison. Those plane don't want to die 😉
God I love when I can watch passionate Star Wars content be made... especially when it’s around the ship lore of a Y-Wing!🙏
I think this is the earliest I've ever caught one of your videos, usually I am not even awake this early.
Y-wing is absolutely a synonym for the A-10, infantry's favorite flying Cadillac!
So you mean the Y-wing is actually crap overhyped by people who buy into it's hype?
I think you could go back to the WW2 era P47 to find an even earlier ancestor. Massive fighter bomber with a powerful engine and loved by those who flew it.
Very tough bird
@generation tech , you are awesome and I love your vids. Keep grinding and doing a good job. Also your what ifs series are really cool , maybe you should do another?? Keep going dude 👍🏻
Chunky, iconic, tough and tons of character. Thats why the Y-Wing is my favourite ship in Star Wars.
I’m curious on how well the Razor Crest gunship would hold during the Clone Wars?
I believe it was a security or patrol vessel... think law enforcement. It does remind me a lot of the Laat
@@GenerationTechI’m trying to picture about 20 Clones coming out of all sides of the ship

Love the content and format.

Did a star wars tabletop set after the Clone Wars, and one of my players had a Corellian Jedi who had a souped up Y-Wing their master gave her during Order 66. That thing soloed a Star Destroyer near the end of that campaign. Absolutely nutty starship.
The fact you knew that about Lucas was pretty rad
People laugh at me when I pick the Y-Wing over the X-Wing.
They can keep laughing.
I'll stick with the ship I've flown in many games over the past 15 years.
A wise doctor, probably the best doctor, once said:
"Treat her like a lady, and she'll always bring you home."
Absolutely my favorite Star Wars ship.
In the D6 SWRPG Campaign i started in the early 2000s, set c.20 ABY, my Mando Sharpshooter took 2 Y-Wings as partial payment for a New Republic Bounty on a Sith...
He hot-rodded them further & re-armored them into Assault-Interceptors. He bought 2 Astromechs, R5-D4 & (i forget) to help with mods, astrogation/copiloting &
turret gunners.
Now i have a New Character Idea because of this sweet vignette...
Great video! I never thought of the Y-Wing as the Ilyushin Il-2 of Star Wars.
It's funny, throughout the whole video, the Y-Wing's story made me think about the A-10 history especially the way it got ripped by some Air Force generals but loved by the troops on the ground.
Mighty Mighty Man starts Playing in the background
I still remember the description of the Y Wing in the N64 Rogue Squadron game. “She handles like a sleepy hut” 😂
I Love the subtle Vibe of Allen presenting Himself as if He’s in Universe
Like Garand Thumb reviewing Halo guns like He’s an in Universe Veteran
It’s that exact Perfect kinda Tact Vibe that make’s It
ARC-170 needs some love that’s my favorite star fighter next to the TIE fighter.
Over state not under state. " I connot over state the need for " etc. Thank you for another great video
Nice👍🏼 Thanks Alan👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I was thinking A10 right before you said it. BRRRRRRRT
That thumbnail, love it
Great video! Thanks!
The Y-Wing is my all-time favorite!
The Y-wing reminds me of the A-10. It has constantly been on the chopping block by military brass in favor of mire "up-to-date" and versatile aircraft. However, it is so effective and beloved by boots on the ground, that it's still around and much more effective than its supposed replacement...
You really uploaded a video on coruscant?!
DUDE I'm lovin' the background - lolololol!!!!!
Loved the Y wing since Gold Squadron
The Y-Wing is my all time favorite.
I remember falling in love with this ship for a second time when it came out in the clone wars.
Yeah it definitely grew on me especially as the graphics got better with the show
Glad to see the Y-Wing getting some love! Is that Alderan in your background? Too pretty to be the capital.
I 🧡💛 Generation Tech
I've been a Y-wing appologist for decades. Even when treated like dirt in video games.... I was there.... Y-ing it up.
Truly glorious
Great vid. Didn't know that background info on the Y

Y wing always been my favorite ship to pilot across the various games that featured a rebel faction.
Cool, you're done with Acolyte videos! I can watch again!

I always thought about them more along the lines of being the equivalent of a de Havilland Mosquito
"Is this just a stripped-down YT-series chassis with extra armor and the cargo bays converted to magazines?"
"Maaaaaaaaaaaaaybe."
"Wait, isn't this the same design the pirate lord Goraag used in his Mid-Rim fleet?"
"Corellian Engineering Corporation bears no legal responsibility for modifications made by the end user and *if* it is the same design but professionally refined they did not obtain proper intellectual property protections."
I wouldn't be too surprised if the A-10 influenced George Lucas in any way- given the plane was 5 years old at the time of Episode IV.
love that warthog!
my favorite star wars tier list goes the b-wing then the y-wing then the harrower-class dreadnaught for a reason
9:40 daaang... the roar of that Y-Wing on the bombing run was awesome. Almost as terrifying as those TIE fighters in Andor.
So, the Y-Wing was basically the Republic's version of our A-10?
Edit: Yeah, okay. Just heard the last bit of the video.
@@peerschulz2029 It's closer to the F-105D Thunderchief, as unlike the Phantom, the Y-Wing really struggled against other aircraft.
I missed videos like this.
The Y-Wing is basically the AK-47 of the Star Wars fighter bomber world lol
