    my tip for photo backdrop for people starting out and not wanting to drop $40-$50 for legit photo paper: Dollar store poster boards. I use 3 white boards, one laid flat, and the other two leaning up against the corner of a wall. They come in black as well

  • @LMoProVisualComm
    @LMoProVisualComm 4 роки тому +23

    good job... you can always place the ring light to the side and use a whiteboard to bounce light back. you don't have to have the Ring Light directly over the subject. since you have both, try place the diffuser around the ring light that will soften the light. although it doesn't come with one you can improvise.
    All in all a great comparison video... awesome job sir...

    I have seen sellers that use the two soft boxes and an additional ring light in front as a "fill in", ant the pictures look really good. Your comparisons are a great help, Thanks.

    My ring light came with a clamp mount for my phone and a bluetooth clicker. You can stage your photo with a ring light and have perfect tripod stability at the same time which is a massive advantage over buying a separate tripod with the box lights.

    Hairy Tornado I love your videos and have learned a lot from you. HOWEVER here is a warning to anyone who, like me, has never touched photography equipment in their life and is totally clueless. This brand of lights comes with no instructions at all for set up etc. Yes you can fumble thru it like I did but it’s annoying. I’ve been using them for a few days w terrible results and hating them. Until I rewatched this video and said Hey! What are those white screens over the harsh bulbs? I didn’t get those! Umm yes I did but didn’t even know what they were, thought they were cleaning cloths or something and didn’t even open them. Like I said, I’m clueless and instructions would have been nice. Time to start rephotographing yet again! 😬

    It is more important to set your camera appropriately if you are able to use custom settings. I have 2 soft boxes and they work well for large items. I wanted to set up a small photo area next to my desk for small flat lay items I cannot scan. It would be stationary and not need to be moved much. Most pics would be straight down. For small items like buttons, small books, and large documents. I think I am going to buy a ring light.

    The principle is to only choose the right and not the expensive. This principle applies only to popular demand.
    Now the common parameters of the latest lamps in 2022:
    1. (1) There are 10 levels of brightness, and the color temperature is 2900K-6700K. If you can't reach it, you can pass it directly, because they are out of date;
    (2) The computer clip used by 6-8inch has the disadvantage of damaging the computer screen. 10-12inch use desktop stand, limited lighting range and usage scenarios. 14-16 inches, these two sizes are relatively small, neither big nor small, and the scope of application is limited.
    18-20 inches, more recommended, the brightness and usage scenarios can meet most needs, 21-22 inches, the brightness is better, but due to the large head of the lamp, the bracket is unstable and easy to tilt.
    (3) Most of the brackets on the market are of the same specification, and the selling points of each are concentrated on the ring light.
    2. 1%-100% LED display, I suggest that non-professional photographers do not need to choose, can you see with your eyes where the difference in brightness between 10% and 15% is? When we generally use it, we use our eyes to see if it meets our lighting effects. It is just like the general rotation and buttons to adjust up and down.
    2.
    There are two types of power supplies, one is USB and the other is Power Adapter with Plug. If you have high requirements on the brightness of the light, choose the Power Adapter with Plug, because it includes all the brightness of USB and higher.
    3.
    The number of lamps directly affects the effect of lighting. The more lamp beads of the same specification, the more evenly distributed the light. Color Rendering Index CRI>90, the higher the CRI, the better, the closer to natural light, the more expensive the price.
    4. The more lamp beads of the same specification, the more uniform the light will be.
    If you can't remember so many parameters, it doesn't matter. Look at the title. The parameters displayed in the title represent the seller's advantage. If the advantages of the title cannot reach the above parameters or the description indicates that this parameter is lower than the basic parameters on the market, Sellers want to highlight their advantages and make you want to buy.
    Different usage needs, you can choose the one that suits you according to your own needs.

    It's not a fair comparison. The ring light is delivering 'raw' light, whereas the softboxes are modified by the fabric or scrim in front of them and the inner textured reflective sufaces. Also the light being delivered by the ring light unidirectional. This why they are used as fill lights to fill in shadows.

  • @AlexBabcock-hw9iz
    @AlexBabcock-hw9iz 5 років тому +5

    I like the look with the soft boxes on all the different pictures maybe if you had adjusted the ring light to make it less harsh it might of made a bit of difference. Intersting with the ring you can adjust the light but with the boxes you can adjust the positioning.

    Just stumbled upon your video as I was researching lighting for my Etsy shop product photos. At 4:18-19 in the video as you're shooting through the ring light with your phone it shows gray shadows on the product area. This is EXACTLY what I've been dealing with for the last few months with my new iPhone 14pro and trying to eliminate those shadowy bands has taken me down a rabbit hole of different lighting options. On your finished photo you don't see the shadows, but on my photos you do. I currently am using a DIY light box with white poster boards and foam core and a diffusing panel on the side with a daylight 5000K LED plus an overhead LED light (also daylight 5000K). My photos without adjusting exposure are too dark and I have these gray shadow bands on them as well. I was thinking about a ring light to see if that would eliminate the shadows and then on your video I saw those same shadow bands. Please can you advise what might be happening and how to eliminate them? I am soooo frustrated with how my photos are turning out. I got better photos with my old iPhone 11 before upgrading to this supposedly much better phone camera! Thanks so much.

      I know this is old, but wanted to mention usually you don’t want your room lights or any other lighting on when you’re using ring lights or soft box lights because the additional lighting (like bedroom light or closet light, etc.) can mess with the color in the photo. Hope that makes sense 😂

    Thank you for this. I felt like it was an interesting comparison, but, given that you used two versus one, not a fair one. I understood your rationale, but, for example, I have 2x 19" ring lights, 4x large LED panels, 3x medium LED panels, 2x Aputure AL-F7s, 2x Aputure AL-MCs, 1x Aputure AL-MX lights (off the top of my head). I am only now purchasing a softbox, because on my UA-cam channel, I'll soon be reviewing a Bowens mount COB video light, and this will aid in that review. What I'm trying to determine is the properties of a softbox I'm going to want, or does it even matter, aside from needing the Bowens mount? Anyway, if you have comments, or if any of your experienced viewers do, please let me know. Thank you.
