Disney's Failed Next Big Thing: Prince of Persia

  • In the early 2010's Disney tried to recapture the magic of Pirates of the Caribbean by pumping out big budget blockbusters that went on to bomb at the box office. 2010's Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is great example of this. In this video essay I examine what exactly went wrong, and offer some of my thoughts on the film.

I remember seeing the trailer for that in the theater and yelling, "OF MARS!" at the end. What's the point of giving your movie the most whitebread name imaginable and LEAVING OUT THE PART ABOUT MARS?!

@onbearfeet It just makes the film sound so much less interesting. It's like making a film about Lawrence of Arabia, but you leave out the "of Arabia" part. Who would be impressed with that? What's meant to draw in the audience if the name of your film sounds so dull?

So this movie was already failing when my dad and I decided to go see it. It was… good. Like… real good lol. We both loved it! I was so disappointed how audiences had acted towards it. My boyfriend at the time had read the books and saw the film. He said it was somewhat faithful and he was fine with it. As someone who never read the books, my dad and I loved it. Sad it failed so badly.
Now… Prince of Persia??? Garbage trash fire. Way to take a really beautiful captivating fairytale and turn it into something so bullshit I could seriously barely recognize the end product. Wtf??? The game had this PERFECT story. The first game anyways.. (the sequel kinda shit alllll over the first game). But the first game was so perfect, they’d only need to FUCKING ADAPT IT. Why in the absolute fuck would they change SOOOO MUCH!?!?!????!!! The princess? wtf??? She was so fucking bland and just this white chick with a British accent???? WTF?!?! In game shes this beautiful slave who breaks free and ends up having this truly earned romance with our prince. Then at the end the Prince is telling her the story of his adventure so they could stop it from happening. That’s perfect! She doesn’t remember her adventures with him but she hears all about it and I believe ends up feeling for the Prince again even though they didn’t have that same journey.

This movie completely ignored the original plot. Sands of time is a critically acclaimed game and is easily one of the best games made by Ubisoft. Had the makers stuck with the original plot, the movie would have done well and would have given Disney the opportunity to make additional sequels with Warrior Within and Two Thrones.

I suspect they wouldn't have gone into R rated territory with The Warrior Within and Two Thrones, if we're talking about faithfulness to the source. That said, I agree, Sands of Time is *right there* and it's great. Then again, Disney also completely failed to do the smart thing and adapt the Thrawn trilogy over in Star Wars. It's kind of a Thing with them; take a beloved IP and mangle it, trying to cash in on the existing fans, while futzing around with it enough to reveal their contempt for the source and the audience.

    • @OlgaZuccati
      @OlgaZuccati 4 дні тому +1

@@teshtishtoshtesh3218 i mean, movies can be unfaithful to the source material and still be successful, the issue is that there was barely any artistic vision behind it, it was just a movie constructed by executives based entirely on perceived trends (which is basically how most disney movies are made these days).

As a kid, I loved this movie. I made my parents take me to the cinema three times just for it. I had the comic book, too (back then, Disney used to make comic books that followed the exact same story of their movies, I believe Pirates had a comic also). I haven't watched it since and am afraid to because, honestly, the editing does feel pretty jarring from the few clips you've showed and I don't really remember the plot all that much, but this movie definitely made kid-me very happy

The choices made in this movie certainly don't age well, and Jake Gyllenhaal was badly miscast - not only because he's not in any way Middle-Eastern looking, but he's literally the 'only' American actor between British actors/actresses there. There was even an interview about how he had to fake British accent just to match with the rest of the cast.

    • @ThePythonfan

I really never understood the forced British accents in fantasy movies...even for movies such as Troy which is half fantasy or like 300 which is purely (un)historical fantasy. I mean miscasting is bad enough but then that forced accent is ridiculous.

Ben Kingsley looked the part, acted it well and overall was just the best actor possible for the slimy manipulative villain in the film.

There’s a massive hoodoo over video game films and I’m not sure why. They have a built in audience, for a start. But they also have an established cinematic world. It should be incredibly straightforward. But for some reason producers and directors decide to complete forget that and try to create something else. I can only assume they’ve never played video games or are trying to impress their children or something. Hopefully we’re far enough into the 21st century that people making films now actually played the games and have a love for them when they’re recreating them as films. I hold out a very shallow hope, but I suppose it’s possible

The first time I watched it, I actually hated it. I thought the dagger was a cool concept but the romance between the protagonists (which is a big part of the plot) was just too bad. However with time, for some reason here in Italy they used to broadcast it almost ever Christmas lol, I started to enjoy it more. The romance is still the weakest part but it has some cool action sequences and, like I said, the dagger is such a cool idea! I wish they had used it more.
Last year I finally played the game and I was surprised fans were sad it didn't follow the game more since it doesn't really have that much story. Just an excuse for the gameplay. I think the did an excellent job in adapting it into a movie.

It's not a great adaptation of the Sands of Time, but it's a fun enough film on its own (though Jake was indeed miscast... he's decent enough to be engaging, but it would have been great to have a real Persian descendant in the role... if they were competent and not just cast for diversity's sake). Weirdly, I think a more faithful adaptation would have been worse, though, as they would have tried harder to lean into the Warrior Within and Two Thrones, which were gross missteps in their own way. There's no way that Disney would have adapted those faithfully, veering hard into R rated territory.

The lazy and white wash casting of Gyllenhal immediately signaled the lack of effort put into making the film.
Also, recovering from the '08 crash- people were more weary of wasting their money. Just like they are today with all the low mental effort Marvel movies.

I always find Jerry Bruckheimer’s movies he’s involved with interesting, even the terrible movies he’s produced like Kangaroo Jack, Pearl Harbor, and G-Force, Gemini Man, & The Lone Ranger there’s something fascinating about them you can’t turn away from. And at least you remember them unlike Disney’s Wish for better or worse.

Finally a video on the movie that I thought and still think could produce 1 or 2 more movies. But below are my thoughts
    1. Budget was ridiculous no movie is worth more than 120 million you need to make money.
    2. Found out that white Guys could live around that area (this is only according to the information I found).
    3. Marketing was very bad " he may be reclous" I remember from the ads making him look like a cocky punk. Not good
    4. Forget toys start a franchise first than add toys later.
    5. Definitely could have two more movies. First one is two thrones have Destin go on a journey to defeat an evil Prince who can use the sand of time. Who has a sand army? Combine The mummy with two thrones and you have a good film. Then the other one would be an adaption of the forgotten sands. So you have two more movies and more money in your bank
6 lastly, it's very very sad that this series never got more because if you cut down the budget and focus more on story instead of spectacle you could produce some good products here. I would definitely greenlit One more film and see how it does if it was me. But great video dude. Excellent job

So, people didn’t like the movie partly because of the actor’s skin color? How racist of them, they should’ve been more open minded. It’s a fictional story after all, with time travel, a white guy in the Middle East isn’t the wildest thing.
He looks about as much a part of the scenery as black people in Viking villages and a black Anne Boleyn, I don’t see what all the fuss was about…

I think all of those are bad simply because of the historical and geographical setting. If it was pure fantasy, or if there was an in-story explanation for a character of that race being there, there would be no problem. It's just nonsensical to put a white guy in medieval Persia or a black guy in medieval Scandinavian without pretence.

Man, Alfred Molina's character has to be the only thing I truly remember from this movie. Well, that and the fact that despite it being called "The Sands of Time" the darn things only show up twice in the movie. A lot of squandered potential for what was one of the main mechanics in the game. Imagine if Mario had only jumped twice in his movie. This film was such a disappointment for me. I don't hate it, but I find it so forgettable.

So we're supposed to embrace the multicultural re-interpretation of every western story (Bridgerton, black Anne Boleyn, black little mermaid, etc) but also hate the slightest hint of white castings on fictional non-western worlds? 🤔

Persia is Iran, which are a Caucasian people. Iran is Farci for Aryian. It wasn't until the ottoman invasion did the bloodlines begin to change. So Gyllenhaal actually fits in ancient Persia. It is not the middle east. You are thinking of Arabs. Lots of Iranian people have blue eyes or green eyes and fair skin. Especially the farther north you go in the country or up in the mountains.

I feel like another category of films I’ve observed have been the hangover clones. From movies like Tag, Ricky Stanicky, Horrible Bosses, it always seems like a core friendship group of immature men getting into, most of the time, irredeemable hijinx. Always featuring a lot of horrible and sexualized portrayals of women, unearned redemptions for men who are acting irresponsibly and strange fulfillments of fantasies that appeal to misogynistic views. Obviously it’s not super fleshed out and I worry that I’ve focused on certain points a little too much. But just something I only started recognizing after watching this series.
