    My mechanical shutter on my D750 failed on me during a wedding. Right as the couple was doing the first kiss. I had a D4 on me as well but it had an 85mm on it and I was up close because I was using a 17-35 on my D750. Needless to say I missed the kiss 🫠🫠🫠. I've been using Nikon since 2004. Each system has their pro's and con's, it is really up to what works for each photographer. It could also be that the thought of selling everything to switch systems could be a poor business choice especially if your shooting all year long. Bringing in a new system alongside as a test seems like a much better business choice. That being said, I'm sticking with Nikon until I retire. Currently using a Z9, ZF and D850 for backup.

      I'm lucky that my old cameras seem to get "Borrowed" by my son. He loves my D800, but rarely gets access to it, even though I shoot the D850 90% of the time (I did used the D800 in preference when I did a lot of burnout photography as it seemed to autofocus way better than the 850 in smoky environments where I really did quickly point, press the shutter and then duck away from the rubber heading towards my head - I learnt to duck after shattering my thumb many years ago at an event lol)
      If I get the Z9, I know my D800 will magically disappear :)

    Taylor I appreciate your videos. I keep seeing this thing about Nikon and video recording to two card slots, my take is this whenever digital started SD cards and digital media wasn't reliable. I have had many hybrid cameras on the past 7 years, probably since 2020 I have not done memory back up for any professional jobs, a few caveats, I don't cheap out on memory cards, I don't pass memory cards from a camera to another without formatting them in the new camera before shooting. For reference I use currently the A7SIII, A7IV, Fujifilm xh2, Fujifilm XS20. I really believe we are pass the point of mid reliability on camera cards into pro systems

      It will be better in DR. I shot with a Z6 and D850 but the Z6 III ill replace both. I do not need Z8/9 45mpx. Where I moved to 24 years ago it will take a long time before we see and Z6 III unless I fly back the US to get one that added $2000 it the cost. Everyone thinks I am crazy for still using the Z6 but it is me #1 body over D850 which is likely the best DSLR ever made but the low light performance, weight, image quality and my subjects are people so I do not need the latest AF system because I average 2 missed focus per 500 frames, which is better than my second shooters with later Canon and Sony users who brag about how much better AF they have....but the results betray them, I get the cards and do all the editing...color and AF , plus the Z lenses and low light performance the old Z6 is the better tool. A Z6 with a 85 1.8 or 1.2 just gets better results over a long shooting day, Same with studio work and my ballet and live theater work the files are just better. Some times I use a second editor on a long event like international economic forums with 8 days and 140 countries represented, there is a lot of frames to process, each single shop or video(I use a wireless boom for audio assistant, and a spotter, a girl who knows who everyone is so there is no mixup in names/countries represented. For me, Nikon has never failed me, so there is zero incentive to switch, no brand has the 50 1.2 and Plena or as true colors, consistent menu or low light performance. And never worrying about one failing. I do not hire seconds with Sony too flimsy in build, too little access to parts and no parts are available for cameras out of production.

    From samples that I've seen on DPReview, I don't see a huge difference in low-light performance between the 24 and 45 megapixel cameras. I'm an "advanced" hobbyist and I just got the Z8 from B&H. It's heavier than my old a7III, but the grip makes it so comfortable to hold. Because I did a trade in, it obviously was less expensive for me. I probably wouldn't get the Z8 if I was paying $3800. I'm still pondering returning it and getting the Z6III/ZF and an additional lens, but I don't see the high iso performance improvement that I was expecting from a lower megapixel full-frame camera. If the ISO 6400 files on the 24 megapixel files were cleaner, I'd consider it. Otherwise, I'm sticking with the Z8 and saving up money to get another lens down the line.

    As an owner of a D800 that I got shortly after release, and then the D850 close to 3 years ago, I am after something that will mostly be used for video, but on holidays I'll just take the 1 camera, and I think that will be the Z9. Sure it's almost twice the price as the Z6iii, but I'll be the first to admit I do often shoot at a distance, and crop rather than need to change lenses, and the higher MP gives me that luxury without really compromising on quality of the final image. I love the weight of the D850, and the additional 300 odd grams will not be a deal breaker at all.

  • @boostedmaniac
    @boostedmaniac 6 місяців тому

    I agree on the Nikon ergonomics and the way the grip feels. I shot a borrowed Sony A7r3 with a 100-400mm for a sporting event just to try it and the yes the grip with the weight of the lens (while not to heavy) where the zoom ring is required me to hold it closer to the body and made using the Sony more uncomfortable. My Z9 with the heavier 180-600mm I can easily walk around and hold all day without any issues. While it’s heavier, it’s just balanced and easier to hold.

Looking for fast, reliable focusing (especially when subjects are moving quickly). Also looking for good/excellent low-light shooting capabilities and fairly decent high-ISO options. Hello! I'm looking for an upgrade from my original Z6 and I was very excited when I heard about the Z6 III. I'm now looking to upgrade my camera body, however I like to shoot landscape (it's kinda a recent interest to me) and I would like to be able to make big sized prints in the future. Do you think that the Z8 would be more suitable for me? I guess I would buy the Z7 III straight if there was one with the better view finder and the other upgrades, but the thing is that I don't want to wait and rather upgrade my body for now.
    I really love my Z6, expecially the feel of it and the outcome of the photos. I'm a bit concerned about the lack of a mechanical shutter of the Z8, but if the resolution is better in the end (for my usecase), I think that will do.
    A slight note, the cost of the body isn't really an concern for me.

    So I have a D750 but I'm not a pro, I don't do weddings or anything. I just like photography, especially when traveling. I looked at the Z6/7 (II) before but I got the impression that it might not be an improvement in every way over my D750. AF-wise, for wildlife, it might be worse. I think the Z6 III speaks to me. It's not just the AF, but also the IBIS (Hudson Henry had a shot at 75mm and 1/2 sec that was sharp), and of course the other benefits like exposure preview and AF all over the frame. Also, the screen flips vertically as well, which I like for low angle portrait orientation shots. I just hope SnapBridge is reliable for geotagging since plugging a dongle into the accessory port would limit the movement of that screen. It's smaller and lighter than my D750 as well, which I appreciate.
    I do wonder if it is overkill though. It is also not cheap for me; I bought the D750 used for GBP550. If I buy it, it will be by far the most money I've spent on a body. And then I have to get lenses as well. I know I could adapt my existing ones, but I want to at least get the 14-30, and then changing lenses becomes like juggling with the FTZ. Also I do occasionally do wildlife with a 100-400, for which I often have to crop. The Z6 III doesn't give any more leeway for that.
    Another cost-related thing is insurance. Especially if I go traveling, it will be more expensive to insure new mirrorless gear. Besides that 14-30 I'd probably get the 24-120 and 100-400. Meaning it's several thousand pounds of gear. I'd also hate to think that that could make me a target for theft. I don't want to think about that all the time when traveling.
    Any recommendations?

      Without any urgency, you might want to wait until the end of the year. Last year, the Z8 was released at $4000 USD, and by November it was on rebate at $3700. Last month, the price went down again to $3500. The Z6III may see some discounts at the end of the year.

    Since I invested in the Zf and Z8, I won't be getting the Z6 III (which I guess is a good option if you want both of those in a single camera, and as such, the Z6 III would be redundant for me, but I do still prefer to have two camera bodies anyway, one as a backup). So I think for the right person, the Z6 III makes sense. If you already own the Zf and don't need the video features, then you're not really losing out on much. The Z8 is obviously a Z6 III and more (mostly like a Z9 without the extra bulk/weight). For most people though I think if resolution is not a concern, the Zf or Z6 III will do (although since Nikon does claim the Z6 III is 20% faster than the Z6 II, does this mean it's say 10% faster than the Zf or what?)

    • @UnconventionalReasoning

      With a Z9 or Z8, the choice of a second body between a Zf or z6III seems to be about operational uniformity. Does the photographer want two cameras which feel mostly the same, or is the dramatic difference appealing. It seems like Liam may prefer the Zf because it doesn't feel like his "work" cameras.

    would the Z6iii Autofocus be a huge step up from a D750 when it comes to autofocus performance? My largest concern with the newer nikons is the Eye Af seems to front focus quite a lot.

      I have recently gone from d3s and d800 to z system (z9 and zf). Yes the autofocus is a huge step up for these aging eyes! Yes, there is a learning curve and I am needing to trust the camera more, but as soon as I pull up the files I am pleasantly surprised. Also enjoying the lighter bodies. I have not experienced the front focusing I have heard with the z6/7 bodies. (Im shooting with the 85 1.8 wide open)

    • @livejames9374
      @livejames9374 6 місяців тому +2

      @@timmasters4893the z8 and z9 don’t have front focusing issues. “Quite a lot” is not accurate, it’s more accurate to say “on very rare occasion”. Z6iii will likely perform the same. Z mirrorless af is more consistent, precise and much easier to get acceptable results compared to DSLR. In my opinion.

    • @timmasters4893
      @timmasters4893 6 місяців тому

      @livejames9374 I have already seen sample photos taken by the z6iii that look nice but when zoomed in you can see its focus point is on the nose or hair. It is known that Nikons eye AF is not as consistent as Canon or Sony. I am sure it would be a big step up from the D750 because it also is not perfect. I actually View the Z6iii as what the F750 was when it came out. Lots of trickle down from their pro bodies. Very excited but I also feel like the tech from the Z9 is now 3 years old and an Expeed 8 is likely to be used end of this year or next year. And with that processor I think it will be game changing. I'm just sick of waiting

    Hi, thanks for the excellent comparison. I want to buy a mirrorless camera system, 60% video and 40% photos. I am in Bangalore India where the ambient temperature goes up to 38 deg c in summer. My needs are 4K 24fps, 60fps and 120 fps without overheating issues (I don't need 6K or 8K). Also I need good stabilized image quality in RAW footage. Should I buy Z8 or Z6iii? I love the looks and sensor of Z8 but it has only 5.5 stops of IS compared to 8 stops of IS in Z6iii. Please guide me. Thanks in advance. (Initially I looked for A7S3 but 12MP is too less for photos, A7iv does not have 4K 120.. Canon does not have affordable lens options as I am looking for one wide angle zoom (16 to 35 range f4) for vlogging and landscapes, 35mm 1.4/1.8 prime for studio and low-light, 85mm 1.8 prime for portraits and 200 to 600mm telephoto for birds and wildlife, which both sony and Nikon have in affordable price but not Canon)

    Does anyone here have any input on the Z5 at all? I know it's more entry level but I've been looking at it for years and have yet to pull the trigger. I only need it for personal photography. Would the Z6iii be overkill? I've been looking to upgrade from the D5500. Thanks!

    • @Fritzystuff
      @Fritzystuff Місяць тому +1

      Hey - not sure if you've bought yet? In-case not; the Z5 image quality is great for the price. The Z6 ver1 and II has visibly less noise at high ISO's. The Z5 and Z6 ver 1 AF is OK but not that great, so if you are into snapping moments or wildlife/sports they just don't work that well. The Z6 II has the best balance in terms of price vs image quality and AF performance is decent. The Zf has the same image quality as the Z6 II and even better AF system and better VR, but possibly worse ergonomics.... and then the Z6 III has almost Z8/9 AF performance but not exactly the image quality of the Z6 II and or Zf. So basically, the Z5 is good if you are ok with a mediocre AF system... If not then the next level would be the Z6 II or Zf. If you want to move to the next level before the Z8, and you are ok to sacrifice some image quality in order to not miss any moment or movement, then only the Z6 III comes into play. Not sure if my late night brain is making any sens, but there goes my thoughts and experiences as I have used them all. (Currently own a Z8 after selling my Z6 II (and owned Z6 ver1 before). Now testing the Zf vs Z6 III for a backup body

    The Zf is a stand-in for the FM3A! 😂
    The Z6III vertical grip is different than any other, it's the MB-N14, the Z6II/Z7II use the MB-N11 and the Z8 uses the MB-N12.
    I always appreciate when UA-cam photography influencers emphasize the ergonomic benefit of the grip. Sometimes people think, if their wrist hurts, they want the camera without the grip, but the grip actually helps.
    When Liam talked about "medium raw", is that the HE or HE* options? Or does it have a reduced megapixels raw option? Reading the "documentation", it seems that the medium image size only applies to the jpeg files, but it's easy to misinterpret the information. I know some of the DSLRs like the D850 had lower resolution raw files, but I thought Nikon dropped that in favor of the HE/HE*?

    As a photographer who was mostly well served with 16mp files from the D4, I think I've found the perfect mirrorless middle ground. I wanted the speed, battery and autofocus of a Z9, but had no need for the filesizes, or the extra weight. I went with an Olympus OM-1 as main camera, and Z6ii as counterpart. The AF, colour, lens choice, portability and speed of the OM-1 are astounding, I dislike using NR, so that's where a Z6ii and some fast primes can pick up the very low light duties my old D4 had, but with extra AF area and a better autofocus system.
    I had to make some import presets to get Olympus and Nikon colours to pair well, but overall my kit is lighter and my workflow is smoother running an OM-1 rather than a Z9. I'd suggest anyone who doesn't need 40mp size images try one - the portability of m43 is really liberating and the results are luxuriant.
    I would have gone with the Z6iii, but it doesn't seem to offer substantially more DR or low light capability over the OM-1. The Z6ii however makes very clean high ISO files with great colour fidelity - better than even D4 or Z6iii. Although it is slower than the mk III, I've got the OM-1 if I need speed.
