  • It's about time the shadowy cartel of playboy gentleman collectors brought together a small selection of their priceless exhibits and got them muddy.
    Retro MTBs ridden hard in the North Yorkshire Dales, then judged by some extremely fussy scrutineers. Will one of them kill its rider? Will the cheapest bike also be the fastest?
    Bikes:
    Fat Chance Yo Eddy
    Marin Team Titanium
    Cannondale SM2000
    Raleigh Dyna Tech Ogre Titanium
    Specialized S-Works Prestige

    I know Modern MTB’s are better in performance,
    But those old 80’s & 90’s MTBs have so much more style & interesting color ways & I love the overall frame of the older stuff.

      @@red_dread I have a 22lb Nuke Proof 1995 Ti Mt. bike, and just picked up a 30lb Trek Marlin 7 2022 Gen 2 bike. The Trek head tube is still pretty steep compared to the chopper slack head tubes, and the frame is longer. But for performance, the 95 Nuke Proof with turn tighter corners, has much more top speed with 3 chain rings (compared to one on the trek), and a lower creeper gear. For hard tails, I am not really sold on the performance of the new bikes being better. Just different, and maybe requiring different riding styles. But overall, I like the 95 bike better. Quicker, lighter. I really see no reason for the slack head tubes (like 65 degrees) that are sold today. They are like a Harley chopper vs a motocross bike to me.

      I'm pretty sure they did that on purpose; for effect, of course. And viewer enjoyment! Come on! I haven't heard that many squealing brakes in a LONG time. Surely, none of my canti bikes squealed like that.
      That said, the Dia Compe 986 canti on Crack-N-Fails were the WORST! Toe in, re-grease canti post, sand pads, sand rims, THEN ride around with sandpaper sandwiched between rim & pads with brakes on full. When that didn't work, you threw dirt on the brakes. That was usually the solution.

The brake setup was a nightmare and made its owner very frustrated indeed. We worked out that if you use a fatter, braided straddle cable it bites into the brass pulley and activates the cam system, but if not then it just slips and feels spongy and imprecise. We experienced a lot of the latter... But it looked the shiznit, which is all that matters.

    I believe that pulley style brake system was Cannondales Force 40. It was supposed to increase the braking force by 40%. And yes they were very annoying to set up.

    • @red_dread
      @red_dread  2 роки тому +1

      We worked out that if you use a thicker, braided straddle cable then it bites into the brass pulley and activates the cam action. With a standard Shimano straddle cable it's useless and makes the brakes far less effective!

    We used to use those old shimano servo wave levers with Vbrakes . I disliked the original lx levers and could not afford the XT ones so the old ones worked pretty good.

    • @red_dread
      @red_dread  2 роки тому +1

      We were always advised to avoid using canti brake levers with V brakes and vice versa because of incompatible pull ratios, but if you had the skills you could make it work.

    • @thinkpadBentnoseTheBlind
      @thinkpadBentnoseTheBlind 2 роки тому

      @@red_dread I hear ya but the servo wave is the same mechanism as a v lever, pulls a lot then a little at the end. They worked, just as a dia Compe pc 8 versa would if you removed the lil rubber bumper

    • @EarthSurferUSA
      @EarthSurferUSA 10 місяців тому

      @@thinkpadBentnoseTheBlind The Shimano V-brake levers (XT and XTR), actually had a slot in them, with a roller bearing at the end of the cable that fit in the slot. The slot was about 8mm long (I just measured mine), and positioned in a way with one end of the slot being closer to the lever pivot point. When you pulled the lever, the roller bearing at the end of the cable would be at the far end of the slot (more cable throw to the long v-brake arms). When the pads hit the rim, the roller bearing would roll the cable end to the other end of the slot, (closer to the lever pivot point), and increase the mechanical advantage to the pad/rim pressure.
      Those suckers are smooth and powerful. Probably compare to some disk brakes for power. All cheap department store bikes have v-brakes on them now in the states, but do not have the slot in the levers.

      Have you been watching those traveller bareknuckle fighting videos? It amuses me how they always call each other sausages, and it delights me that this has proliferated to my channel. I know what DX is. In the era when XT was industry standard, and we craved Mavic Mountain, Campag Record OR and Suntour XC-Pro, DX was by comparison a very ordinary, workaday groupset. Certainly nothing to excite a cartel of elite aesthetes. The winning bike, however (my Dyna-Tech) has DX hubs, chainset, cassette and derailleurs. Can't fault it.
