I've watched both series and agree that it is hammed up a lot. I found it interesting looking at all the kit they used though. I've done that HSE scuba course with Neil Brock and although it's slanted towards media diving it has to follow an HSE syllabus hence, Ross diving solo and tethered with comms. and safety line to his harness.
I believe in series I Ross did it using his recreational scuba certificate. The problem with that is that you then have to have a dedicated safety diver. But if the presenters are commercially trained they can act as each others safety diver which means you can reduce the size of the crew. There is a HSE media approved code of practice that stipulates what is required which is why filming underwater in the UK is so expensive.

The yellow harness is for diver recovery and the gas switching block goes to his pony bottle. The line is probably a hard wired comms line and life line. His diving is quite shocking and anyone who needs thirty minutes to tie five knots wouldn't last long as a diver. I also heard most if not all of the little trinkets he found were put there for him to find.

The NDAC bit at the beginning, I'd bet money on that he had to get an HSE ticket to satisfy the legal requirements of filming. Now, the HSE course is most definitely geared towards proper commercial diving, as opposed to the more recreational aspects required for the filming of the series. Hence, the need to learn how to deal with tethers and surface comms.

You’re probably spot on to be fair. I guessed it would be something to do with it being “diving for work”. Just weird that you need all that for training - safety divers, tethered etc, but then just safety divers in the sea. Perhaps it’s something to do with the fact he’s training in Chepstow and qualified when he actually goes diving? With any luck, someone who knows more about this will be able to help us out 👍 Thanks for the comment!!

@@UKDiver I looked at the standard HSE Professional Diver course and it includes
      - FFM and Band Mask
      - comms (wired and wireless)
      - tether signals
      - recompression chamber operation
      - acting as a tender inside a chamber
      - underwater surveying and stills photography
      - scientific diving
      - basic seamanship and small boat handling
amongst other things with the aim "to train existing divers to undertake media, scientific and archaeological projects, as well as prepare candidates for the HSE Surface Supplied Course". Tendered diving is also listed in the "basic" HSE Scuba description. So yeah, I'd say all of that is required to make the HSE requirements even if not for the show itself.

Fun fact, "her" boat wasn't the only Scarpa dive boat he dived off during the making of that series, some of us aren't as fame hungry as you know who ....
