🚨There is SO MUCH more to know about finding campsites and backpacking. Here's my course on ALL OF IT!! bit.ly/3K6Q8RC
As a retired park ranger one of the things I tell people if there's a pre established camping area please use it. Check the area out and see if it meets your needs. But opening up a new area can be hard on the environment and can take away the environment for other campers. Basically limit your impact if possible.
This was a great video and something I have not seen others do. Real time, thought process, communication, and working through issues to select a good place to pitch your tent. Your cameraman was just okay.
I really liked the “what I’m seeing” lists coming up on the screen as you were talking about things.
It's like camping with Sheldon Cooper. That's my spot.... it's close enough to the radiator to be warm in the winter, but not so close that he sweats in the summer. It's also in the path of a cross breeze created by opening windows, and it faces the television at an angle that allows him to talk to everyone without the picture looking distorted
Something I learned the hard way in bear country. Don’t set your tent right beside a heavily used game (or human)trail. Good video!
One mistake I made on the Zion Traverse was not checking the trees for bee nests.
Woke up to what I thought was a drone, but was actually an angry hive.
The camera work, b roll, and background commentary here is some of the best I've ever seen on your channel Dan! That's next level! But also, we need more Emmett.
Academy worthy performance
Bring Back Emmett! That red-haired guy was not up to Emmett's standard!!!
I’ve noticed in state parks where they have large group camp areas, it’s always better imo to go to the last site so that you don’t have people hiking thru your camp. I’d rather walk a little to the water source and have privacy than to camp in an area where people are constantly passing. Just my preference 🤷♀️
Thanks. This is possibly the best video I have seen on finding your tent pitch.
Thanks Dan. Good information here. You and Eric make a great team.
My big question is how fo you find out if your even alowd to camp on Certain trails or not
I have a bad back, I love sleeping In a recliner 😂
Dan, are we ever going to see you in a hammock again? Or have I simply missed it?
When using a topo map, the correct way to tell how steep slopes are is to look at the spacing between a series of contour lines. The closer together the lines, the steeper the slope is when going across the lines. If you divide the total drop over a series of lines by the distance between the first and last lines you get the fall in whatever units you used, like feet per foot or meters per kilometer.
Looking forward to a review of the Flextail Zero Pad 5.6R
This video was so so helpful thank you both!!!
What is the deal with fire rings? I’m old school and been hiking/camping longer than you’ve been alive. With that said, the best way to make sure a fire doesn’t catch the world on fire is to dig down 1-3 inches, not to put a bunch of rocks around the fire. The reason us old farts put rocks around a fire is to heat the rocks. We’ll put the heated rocks in our bed area for heat in winter. We’d also dig a 4-6 inch trench under our sleeping bags, put down a layer of coals from the fire, back fill the trench and cover with foliage in the winter.
I’ve yet to find a youngster like you guys who know how to properly make a fire or prepare a bed in winter. I’ve actually watched Eric sleep directly on snow instead of digging the snow away where he slept. No wonder you need $300 sleeping mattresses and $1,000 sleep systems to survive.
Is this to help go through the Darien Gap
Should always consider snags (dead trees) that might shed limbs or even fall on you in the night.
Not necessarily even dead ones... I almost had a pine branch land on me in the night once (it was fairly windy)
Great information Dan and Eric!!!!
May I know the camera chest holster brand and model?
It seems ultralight and cool as heck
cool
Dan, you should try boost oxygen, I live at 8000 ft and when it gets above 10000, it helps with the lightheadedness. Weights nothing.
One more item to add, try to stay away from dead trees which could fall and ruin your trip!!
Good video on site location but I wish you had included Leave No Trace information. One thing I always say is the best way to determine where to pitch in to just lay down. Your campsite is never going to get any better than where you lay down.
Is this dispersed camping you are doing since it’s not designated camp sites?
Dan I have heard you say time and time again, not a fanny pack guy, so what is that a chest pack?
It is a pack to hold a camera and lens
I mean, it’s not real camping unless you smell each other’s farts. 😊 💨
Any word on a review of the BA tiger wall 2 carbon?
My previous experience with big Agnes and their carbon tents is that they are extremely delicate. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend using them unless you baby your gear like crazy!
Bummer on x was 20 dollars cheaper to just subscribe then to use your link. Maybe I should just venmo you to support you 😅 edit:after using the app for 20 min they asked me how I found them I got you
Fairly new ro your channel it seems like youre selling out to too many video sponsorships (i could be very wrong and am sorry if i am) but i think you need more of this stuff then comparing or showing off products. More informational videos! I k ow you have to pay the bills with gadgets and stuff but include it in your adventures. Again newbie here pribably yelling at clouds but im still here. Thanla for the backpacking content!
What is the pouch you guys are wearing on your chests?
Hyperlite camera pod
@@DanBecker Great, thanks
What's that?
is on x also for Europe?
No but we have equivalents like Outdooractive, Fatmap (Strava), etc.
I left my backpack on rhe ground before. Ravens broke into it and ate half my food in like 5min. Lol never again.
I use Onx hunt i find the satellite imagery is lacking in Alaska if you get very far off the main roads. Its getting better just wish we could better imagery here
Lol. ❤
Will the Spanish channel also have this ?
Yes!
"the sign over there saying 'campground' is also helpful"
Why is there no Broke Back Mountain reference in this here video?
