He's from Tulsa. Given name, Russel Bridges. Back in Oklahoma, they still refer to him as Cousin Leon. In the the old Shelter Records days, hebuilt a studio in an old Tulsa church that he bought. It was the dream of all of us old okie musicians to somehow get a chance to record at the church. It never happened for most of us, including me. Leon has had one of the most amazing careers in the history of American music. It's great to see him out and about again with Elton John.
Two guys with the greatest musical chops (singers, players!) AND the most fabulous rock'n'roll HAIR of all time! Triple threats, both of them and made 70s rock concerts the stuff of legends. So glad that was part of my growing up!
Amen, brother! Meeting Leon and going down to his studio was one of the highlights of my life. I moved to Tulsa to play drums for Gus Hardin, and Gus grew up with him. He and Mary would come out to hear our band, and I was lucky enough to be invited to his Tulsa mansion to receive payment from him for a bus I used for my bands that I no longer have need of. While there, I asked him if I could see his studio, and he took me downstairs to the studio where engineer Roger Linn was there at the board working on his now famous, "Linn Drum Machine, " and I sat at the board with Leon and shared a joint, then joined his band to record hand claps. Leon was not impressed with everyone's timing, and he cracked everybody up with his humor. He also asked me if I played congas and I told him no, and I still am kicking myself for not giving it a shot, even now on New Years Eve, in 2021, going into 2022.
I wish my mother In law Jeanette (recently passed) could have heard this rendition of Somewhere over the Rainbow, Such a beautiful and hopeful timeless old song, From Judy Garland to present day Ariana Grand, but Edgar Winter playing the song on the saxophone is pure magic to me, Melts my heart, love it.
I hadn't thought about these two performers, together in a long time. I saw them in a nightclub in Marin County (North of San Francisco) and was absolutely blown away. They were meant to collaborate... I am so grateful to Jesse for having posted this clip.
saw this tour in a small club just outside of chicago..PJ Flaherty's always remembered this version of this song and have finally remembered to look it up..so glad someone captured it!!! Leon sang it at that show...
I was lucky to have seen them perform together back in the '80s; when they did this song you could hear a pin drop in the venue. Wish I'd seen Leon again though, will miss him~
Beautiful music. I knew Edgar in the mid 60's...I lived in an apartment complex with Ikey Sweat...Ikey played bass for both Johnny and Edgar in a little bar downtown...it's taken me 35 years to forget some of the things that happened during the 60's....in the process, I also forgot some of the good....thank you posting...this is truly beautiful music.
I wish I could find the version Edgar sang this song. I was at their DC concert at I believe the Warner theater. Edgar sang a version that had to have made Judy Garland sit up & jaw drop. His voice was amazing & carried the last note a ridiculous pitch & length. This was the guy who let Rick Derringer scream/sing on his albums? Not only could Edgar play sax with the best jazz people I ever saw, but if he ever wanted to bother, he could have also been an amazing singer.
@parmold He is from oklahoma/tulsa.He and JJ cale were in a band together as youngsters.Leon makes me proud to be from Oklahoma..as does JJ cale. They both continue to be ahead of thyeir time.
I have seen them together & separate in small bars and in front of 20,000 people either way there was way too much talent for whatever venue they played.
