Unfortunately it's pretty much a stalemate , we where actually pretty close to a solution some years ago but the greek Cypriot leadership pretty much tanked it so negotiations stopped. The hard thing is that the people pretty much can get along when given the chance. Ofcourse there are some bigoted opinions from both sides but the truth is ordinary cyprios really want for a solution so that we can get along once again

Well done Barbs, you've put a huge smile on my face! I'm lucky enough to say that very soon I'm starting my one year long tour of duty in Un peacekeeping force in Cyprus, hence staying in the UNPA and visits to an old airport will be something regular and usual to me. Now, because of your video, I feel even more privileged than the rest, not just for the opportunity of being a part of UN force but more as a person allowed to enter where most people do not enter. I'm huge fan of your channel from Serbia, really liked the Serbian episode. It was flammable, just as anything related to us :). To bad we didn't meet in buffer zone. Keep up the good work!

Barbs, cool video overall, their are many points that I can go on that could be better, BUT THE ONE thing that I can not get over, is the subtitles here: 14:44
The guy here does not say "Souvlaki" he said Souvla. Basically the bigger version of Souvlaki ( which is why it has the "ki" part) , the meat peaces are big are you fists, you will not find is as street food but in restaurants or special events etc etc.

Back in college two of my classmates, a Greek Cypriot and a Turk Cypriot (though his family moved to the mainland) wound up being really good friends. Brief history lesson, the Island of Crete, there were Turks living in the island, there is none today. Rhodes has similar history. Guess what happened to Turks in those islands, they were massacred and forced to leave the island. Greeks(Govs) have thought they would be able to achieve the same result in Cyprus. I don't say it's good or bad. Maybe it's very logical for them, because it's a strategically important Island. They tried to took over the island, Greek speaking people in the island massacred Turks but luckily Turkey this time was ready to protect Turks. Hence Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was founded. It exists and it will continue to exist, sooner or later other countries will recognize it as a state.

Barbs misused the word "technically" here. According to international law, as recognised by almost all countries, this area _de jure_ belongs to the Republic of Cyprus. However, it is _de facto_ not under control of the Republic of Cyprus' government.

    • @georgios_5342

@@quuaaarrrk8056 I think there's still a misunderstanding here. The UN buffer was an area controlled by the Republic of Cyprus during the armistice, and then Cyprus invited the blue berrets to its own part of the armistice line. Unfortunately the Occupational government does not remember this, and their tried to violate the area near Pyla, attacking members of the UN peacekeepers. This is of course another war crime. But they claimed it is a "neutral area", it is not, it is the first line of defense of Cyprus against foreign invaders. The green line from 1964 only existed inside Nicosia itself, it was extended to the armistice line in the countryside in 1974.

@GeographyNow I lied in Pyla(village) while I went to university there. For some reason, a british university decided to open a university in the buffer zone. Pyla is a very interesting place. The greeks and turks mostly live together without much problems. But because of the grey area status, some things were weird, like there's a casino every couple of houses. The shops sell mostly turkish products, including very cheap cigarettes. You never see police around just UN cars going around the village every now and then. Police from both sides seem to be allowed to enter if called, but not allowed to stay. Signs are both in turkish and greek(also english). Basically everyone in that village speaks English as a second language or first, including the old folks. There's also a pretty big community of british living in that village. If i had to guess from my experience, I'd say 1/3-1/2 turks, 1/4 greeks, and the rest a mix of british and international students from the University.
Very strange little place to live in my opinion

I used to live in Cyprus as a kid. Aug 2009 - Apr 2012. I lived in the Dhekeila region. If you look at the map there is a spur that comes out of the region on the right. That's where I was. I remember when we would drive to different places and we would see guard towers and fences. Obviously I didn't really understand as a kid but now I find it interesting. My mum would sometimes cross the boarder to the north at Famagusta to go shopping. We took our passports to go shopping. There was a little market we always went to and the guy who was incharge loved my brother (he was 3-6 at the time) he would always give him fruit for free. really miss living there. It was great. Nicosia is the only capital in the world with a boarder running through it. 1:46

08:41 slight correction. Technically the buffer zone, just like the entire island (with the exception of the British bases) is legally owned by the Republic of Cyprus. The UN has been peacekeeping in Cyprus ever since 1963, and every 5 years I believe Cyprus has to renew its request. The Buffer zone which lies between the ceasefire line and the defence line of the Cypriot government, was given to the UN by the Republic of Cyprus so that they can operate. Of course it is illegal for unauthorised civilians to enter. Another correction. You didn’t cross the ‘border’, you crossed the checkpoint, as there are no borders in Cyprus, but a ceasefire line.
