My son and I attended the Sigma 3 Basic standard class three years ago. The instruction was excellent, relevant and comprehensive. This was an amazing time to spend with my kiddo in the woods. I highly recommend their survival programs!

Outstanding. Charcoal is also a good bug/ mosquito replant. And can be used as a foot powder. And as camouflaging on the skin. Just my 3 cent's worth .

Don't know why but thought only ACTIVATED charcoal worked. Never took the time to find out what or how to "activate" charcoal. My info is questionable at best.

Both work. Activated would work better though. Washing the charcoal in a mild acid, citric or vinegar diluted in water. It clears out all the micro pores in the charcoal, increasing the surface area. Definitely improves the flavour of the water too.

Activated charcoal is nothing more than charcoal created by heat and lack of oxygen. The only other method for making charcoal is with chemicals. So charcoal from the fire is just fine. You can also create charcoal by covering wood in ash or a light bit of dirt and making a fire over the top of it.

Hmm! Not entirely sure you know what "Activated" charcoal is. On a commercial scale they use Calcium Chloride, on a personal scale you can use Citric acid or Lemon juice. To activate it, it needs to be acid washed to flush out the Xylem and Phloem in the wood. It's those microscopic tubes that when flushed out give the charcoal such a huge surface area, after charring they are blocked up with all the burnt resins and such.
Plenty of reference material online, Wikihow, Homesteadsurvivalsite, Secretsofsurvival or you could just Google "How to activate charcoal".

I’m thinking you can get charcoal from lightning struck trees or old forest fires....(if you don’t have a way to start a fire)

I understand you have David Wendell on board? Haven't seen much from him for some time. I chose to go off grid for a bit back in 2009/10, living on a barge on the British canal system. What was intended as a year out, turned into eight years. Been back for a while but I'm still catching up with what everyone is doing now.

Dave Wendell hasn’t been with us for like 7 years or more.

I wish someone would do this but actually in a more scientific manner by testing the water under a microscope before and after to see what is actually removed.

The info I gave came from a study I read about the effectiveness of charcoal as a stand-alone filter.
