The pipers , from what I have seen , are so incredibly dignified and precise at these ceremonies.

Please, any someone can me explain, because the presence of the pipes in funeral of firefighter, or polices. Regards from Portugal.
The Irish, at one point, made up a third of NYC’s population in the mid-1800’s and to this day, make up a significant percentage of the FDNY/NYPD’s ranks. It’s as a result of the significant Irish presence in the police & fire departments of the USA that Emerald societies were formed and participate in the funeral processions of the honored fallen of their ranks!

I don’t think so! But Americans have many forbears of Scottish and Irish decent and the traditions have been carried on.

You will be more than fully aware that the RHKP Pipe Band (post 1997 HKP) wears the MacIntosh tartan Officially due to a formal connection arranged by a previous RHKP Commissioner of Police. Unlike yourself, most of those participating here at the funeral of a Senior Colleague, are totally oblivious that the Hackle worn in the Bearskin (probably made from nylon!!!) and the Flag being carried here are the Green, White & Gold of the Irish Republic and have nothing whatsoever to do with Scotland. Ireland has it's own unique design of bagpipes (not the Great Highland Pipes shown here), caubeen headdress and kilt (plain saffron colour) worn without a sporran, or any of the other accoutrements being paraded here. As Jesus said, forgive them, they know not what they do.
See this as Hollywood, and at least they are respecting a fallen colleague.
