Post and Beam Barn Kit Part 8- Roof Sheeting, Clerestory Framing and Power Finally

  • Continuing on this week starting with trimming and blocking the lean-to roof framing I move thru the first bit of roof sheeting and into the clerestory framing. The first part of any new step always takes the longest as you work out the details that will continue through the remainder of the building. It was a real treat to finally get power this week and start enjoying how quiet and peaceful this job site is without my generator running.
    Thanks as always for watching and if you’re new here I’m glad you found the channel and hope you stick around for more.

      Jake, we love the Simpson screws over the GRK for the pulling power and strength as well. We install numerous post and beam barns every year, and we are starting to specify Simpson screws over GRK for that very reason. Looks like a fun build! We need a truck tour as well! Love the one man show!

    Jake, pretty certain you can turn the Hard Fall feature in the iWatch off at all times, or when you are working out….if you wanted to (not advisable when working on ladders or at heights). I find it an aggravation too. Mine goes off if I just clap.

    Must be extremely happy now there's power on the job. No more lugging the man lift back and forth to charge it and no more generator noise. Plus saves money on fuel. Was curious if more bracing was going to be added or if the kit just depended on those steel plates for stability. Kinda surprised me when you added the OSB. That will definitely help with the building stability. A very well put together kit. Anyway, another great video Jake. Really appreciate the extra work you put in to film and edit these videos.

    • @ShredPile
      @ShredPile  Місяць тому +1

      Thanks George! No, nothing else other than the addition of the sheeting over the pine on the walls for shear. There is a few bearing blocks to add in under some of the tie plate attachments and of course the outer lean-to braces but minor stuff. I will be keeping a close eye on one corner in particular becasue of some near constant prevailing wind at this site and will probably upsize and tighten up some sheeting nailing and am considering adding a brace. I'll point it out if it happens:-)

    As I watched you start that sheathing with the 1 by material it took me back over 50 years when I started out as a carpenter and we used ship lap sheathing. I enjoyed it for its weight versus a full sheet of plywood and later OSB, but I remember the draw nail and bars to straighten a stubborn piece. Those days are long gone. I just covered 124 year old ship lap sub floor in our building with durock in preparation for ceramic tile. Now that stuff was a mess.

    • @ShredPile
      @ShredPile  Місяць тому +2

      If I remember right they always used #3 or worse for floors and walls and most of it did'nt age well, junk really. I have a repair coming up in an old building where they used the shiplap for the poured in place exterior walls and then the stripped concrete covered forms become the roof sheeting at the end of the job. Makes sense but sure was messy looking:-)

    • @ShredPile
      @ShredPile  Місяць тому +1

      Thanks friend, i’m not exactly sure how the snow is going to behave on this roof. We don’t typically get a lot in this area and when we do, it doesn’t stay for very long. The metal roof is a double lock standing seam so it’s more or less impervious to standing wet snow. I guess we’ll see :-)

    Hey Jake, buildings looking good. What’s your thoughts on wearing a small microphone when you narrate in the elements? And could I gift you a kit?

    • @ShredPile
      @ShredPile  Місяць тому +3

      Thanks for the offer Miles, I have a fairly easy to use wireless setup already but there are a couple reasons I rarely use it. The major one is if it's on and I trigger any power tool at all it renders the clip unusable from a massive volume spike. The secondary one is that i've lost tons of really good footage when the mic died and all sound stops (it doesn't revert to iphone mic when it dies and the clip is totally silent) It also doesn't fit very well into the time I have to spend juggling stuff and it mostly just frustrates me. I know theres some low volume clips in this episode but a lot of it is from the generator noise disproportionately affecting the camera mic.
      All that said, I was pondering this comment on my evening walk and I realized that I could try just turning on the mic and leaving it at the camera and not clipping it to my collar to see if it works better in regards to tool noise. I'll give it a try and report back.

    Thanks for these videos mate, watching them from Scotland. I have a few questions / comments. I wish you would use a safety harness whilst on the roof. You really look like you know what you're doing though, as in, you've been doing it most of your life. Why no helper for a job so big? Lastly for OSB, my thoughts are that it can contract and expand, and there're supposed to be epansion gaps between all the edges? Looking forward to seeing the next videos. I'm a hobbyist carpenter, which means I make really bad things, for fun, so that's why I question the wood issue. Cheers mate.

      My pleasure, I'm glad you found the channel:-) So the OSB is all gapped, the timelapse doesn't really show it but i'm kicking and tapping at it all the time to maintain spacing as i go. Osb is not my preference but it came with the kit and in the end it is just a barn. You will see me wear fall arrest gear later on in the build when I get on to sheeting the upper pitch. low down like I am here on the 3 or 4 in 12 is not really warranted and for sure not while setting purlins where a slipped board can catch your rope. I've been maintaining a 5pm Thursday posting for a while now and I hope to see you again next week:-)
