My mother recently got a promotion at her work and had to take an Indigenous sensitivity course as part of her training. Good Gods, you wouldn't believe the stories. I knew some of this already, but with the residential "schools" (I will never refer to those places without the quotation marks there because they weren't schools, they were torture chambers), there was scarcely a girl who went through the system who wasn't raped and scarcely a boy who wasn't beaten. When they turned 18, they'd e turned out of the "schools", go home, and not be able to remember their parents' names or their own original, real name, since many of the children were taken at a very young age. In later years, when the film industry first kicked off (though the last "schools" in Canada at least didn't close until the late 80's and early 90's), people initially tried portraying Natives as gentle lovers of nature, but none of the white audience wanted to see those movies. Hence the birth of the Western, with the (and I'm sorry for this) "cowboys and Indians" themes. But none of the "Indians" (remember, folks, Indians are from India) were played by actual Natives. You'd have the likes of Gregory Peck doing the equivalent of black face, not to mention the clothing, none of which represented actual Clan or Tribe styles. Feathers everywhere, all the women portrayed either as extremely ugly or extremely sexualized, and so on and so on. And Trudeau thinks "We're sorry" is enough? Dutcher was right in his Juno's speech: "We can all do better." No kidding.

You know, I think he's a good guy. I saw the Arkells help him finish his speech ("and don't f*cking cut him off this time!" LOL), and he's so soft-spoken but strong about it. 23/07/2024: I've come realize that stretches like these, of dark rooms and a silence that sings from the walls, are really periods of harvesting, gathering lumens that will thereafter be spent in the light. my eyes are search for words again, returning to their sense of evening
I DID IT! Wow...I held all those notes. I'd been trying to sing this song, eh, but I had had abdominal surgery and all of my muscles were very tense. This right here is the first time I've ever held all of them with any degree of success. Damn, Jeremy, you're amazing.
