      saw them last summer at Download festival sorta by accident... I didn't even realise they were playing at the festival until I wandered up to their stage while they were playing! they were incredible, definitely deserving of a bigger stage next time.

    2 vocalists. Xen, the harsh vocalist, is the band's founder and the lyricist. Tim, the clean vocalist, also plays violin.
    The drummer, Dan Presland, has a YT channel with playthroughs (and live ones as well) for every song of theirs, and even some videos where he just sits and comments on his own videos explaining the techniques he's using in that video.
    The band's name is not made up haha, it means "forget not" in Latin as far as I'm concerned.
    And finally, some song recommendations: Forget Not, Intra Venus (there's an official music video for this one), Painters of the Tempest (Part II): Triptych Lux, Eyrie.
    Overall a great reaction, it's always nice to see the constructive commentary from a musician. Really looking forward to more of these!

  • @scottrobinson4611
    @scottrobinson4611 5 років тому +87

    The Violinist and clean vocalist are the same person: Tim Charles.
    He's a classically trained violinist and a pretty good singer too.
    Tim looks like Jesus
    The harsh vocalist is called Xenoyr. Xenoyr is the opposite of tim, he's a Black Metal guy, oddly doesn't like progressive metal very much, yet he's formed a god-tier prog metal band.
    Xen looks like the antichrist. An angel of death.
    There's a great live video of this song. Honestly their live sound is almost studio quality, which is insane for this music.
    You're right in that it's not as time-focused as typical prog, but I think the inclusion of so many layers, the use of two vocalists, a violinist and the heavy draw from other genres really brings a different aspect of 'prog' to this band.
    I feel like they're tailor-made for my taste too. It's insane.
    Also the name is Latin for "Forget not". Your pronunciation is good.

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  5 років тому +30

      You're right about the layering being important. While time-focused prog is definitely the most well-known style, prog can be anything that isn't the status quo. By definition its anything progressive, anything that pushes the medium in new directions. I don't really remember what I said regarding it not being heavy on time changes (I hope it wasn't negative) but I agree that layering is a technique that is certainly "prog-y" and they utilized it exceptionally well on this track.

    I see you reaaaly liked this, the band that kind made prog-death metal, or popularized it, is Opeth. They have a great bassist, a lot of creativity, riffs, cleans, and deep ass growls. i see you like long songs, so listen to The Drapery Falls from the Blackwater Park album (2001), no words to describe this song, Ne Obliviscaris definitely were influenced by this. I urge you to listen to this, and maybe, review it.

    NeO songs will be studied by next generation of musicians and composers. Unreal musicianship and virtuosity from all the members. And the drummer dude, Dan Presland, is a Beast!! Whoever listens to NeO becomes an instant fan. Devour me, Colossus (Blackholes) or Painters in the Tempest (Triptych Lux) if you want to hear something truly stunning from them in terms of musicality.. If I'm remembering correctly there is an Australian University that teaches this song in one of their music courses. It shouldn't be too difficult to find if you do an internet search for it.

    If you think this is good, you should see the live version at Colorado. They play live just as good, possibly even better than in studio. The clean vocalist is also the violinist.

      Dude, I love it. It has such a solid tone with some Ernie Super Slinkies. I've had it for just over a decade now and I still love the way it sounds.

      @@CriticalReactions yo and I just switched from regular slinky to super slinky! the tone is gorgeous. it's only the second bass guitar I've ever owned and I've yet to feel the need for anything more. love it :)

      Right? I'm sure there are "better" basses out there but if I only ever owned this one until I died I think I'd happy. It's just such a solid instrument and sounds great no matter what type of music I'm playing.
