I'm 55yrs old male I was 235lbs 5'9 blood pressure was 160/90 resting heart 120bpm. My doctor put me on Metrprolo beta blocker. I went on a strict keto way of eating less than 1yr later. I am now 188lbs blood pressure 120/70 rhr 70 no meds feel incredible now. No meds! Just keto and power walking.
I was on Irbesartan and Amlodipine (AE inhibitos). After I began Keto and lost weight (about 30 pounds), I ditched both meds. My doctor (who appears to be in his 70s) insisted that I remain on low salt. Later I learned that I needed more salt to have balanced electrolytes. I do understand that physicians in clinical practice often rely on the knowledge that was available when they graduated, but I am still disappointed that he has not updated himself with information critical to the obesity epidemic. YTers such as Dr. Fung have been invaluable, and I am grateful. I now follow Keto and IF and plan to do so indefinitely.
I had borderline high blood pressure and when I went low carb, lost the weight, it went down. I hate, hate taking meds so I was willing to work with diet and exercise and it works. Who woulda thunk? Lol! My pressure is even lower than the norm. Doctors are just so quick with the drugs and most people don't know and don't take the time to research side effects.
I agree 100%. I have elevated BP and my doctor immediately put me on meds and only told me to lower my salt intake and basically said I will have this for life. Since being on Keto I have cut the dose of the meds in half and must eat more salt. My BP is still a little high but I think if I continue to lose weight it will go down.
This is exactly what happened to me. My doctor put me on hydroclorothyazide and about 6 months later I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I hate that stuff! I’m doing keto and it is my goal to ditch the blood pressure meds.

I kept a record of daily bp for five months. Along with that I began Keto. After the five months of normal bp I dropped my med. I have not lost as much weight as I would like, after 8 months, only 30 pounds, but my A1C has been under 5.6 since January 2021. I was dx diabetic almost 5 years ago.
I am in England I am 68. I have been on BP meds for about twenty years. I started low carb January 2020. Over the last three months I have been going light headed and dizzy when standing up. I had my BP checked a couple of weeks ago and lying down my BP was 150/90 and when I stood up it was 132/88. I also had an ECG. I am waiting to see the doctor about my results and hoping that I can come of the medication. I also take medication for gout which I would love to stop but I dare not because gout is so painful. Thank you for explaining.

I was on lisinopril and developed a chronic cough. It went away when I quit. I also suddenly got my energy back. I’m quite annoyed with the doctor, as I told her my bp has been manageable with a simple diuretic. She told me that was what she was prescribing, but it wasn’t. It was a beta blocker. It took me months to figure out that the bp med was behind my cough. I had to figure it out for myself, but it is well known and published. The doctor should have taken me off it when I complained about the cough. Needless to say, I’m not going back to her. Not because she made a mistake, but because she lied to me about the nature of what she was prescribing to me.
Lisinopril is an Ace Inhibitor. I've been on it for 30 years. I was told I can never get off now (I'm 66). I was hoping that wasn't true but after listening to Dr Westman, it probably is😢
Yeah that's crazy I was on a BP med and I noticed ankle swelling. My dr prescribed hydrochlorothiazide instead of changing meds. I thought the diuretic was excessive and didn't do much, changed to losartan, and haven't had that problem since. You're the only doctor I've heard actually address this After being off keto after I had a bad diverticulitis episode requiring surgery, I gained back 50-60 pounds, and my hypertension returned. I've resumed keto and I'm down 20lbs again, and starting to improve my BP again. It'll be nice to be able to go off the medication again after losing more weight
Type 1 diabetic since 1970. Blood pressure on waking is 120/80 or a little lower like 115/75, and I’ve been near carnivore for over six months after a few years of sloppy keto. Random blood pressure during the day is sometimes 140 systolic. A bit higher than I’d like. I’m still overweight by at least 40 lbs. and still mostly sedentary.
I take a half Irbesartan HCTZ 150-12.5 mg. Half tablet daily. Before Keto my doctor took me off BP med. In a few days my pressure went high. I was put back on the half tablet. One year ago I went on Keto. I have lost 60 pounds. My pressure is low again. It fluctuates. Yesterday morning it was 100/61. Today I checked pressure in the morning. 99/58 and an hour later 108/60. At 6:30 pm it was 106/60. Tomorrow I go for pre opt to remove stents and kidney stones in a week. I bet my BP will be normal. I don’t know what is going on. Should I just continue as I am until the kidney stone issue is resolved? I feel fine other than the pain from the stents. If anything I would think my pressure would be high from dealing with these current kidney problems.
I am on 4 different medicines to regulate my blood pressure. I am trying to get off of them by cutting the sugar and carbs. My biggest problem with the medicine is one cause fluid retention in my legs and I'm pretty sure I know which one it is. OMG, I hate it! but I have to keep my pressure down and it helps a lot. My goal is to get off of them this year, I have lost 70lbs but I still have to be on the meds. I need to lose another 70 to 80 lbs, hopefully that will get me off of them.
I lost 40 pounds on keto, got off of all 4 of my BP meds. Eight months later, my BP went high again. I went back on chlorthalidone which gave me low potassium, switched to Losartan which is not working. This began in the summer when I was very active, riding my bike 10 miles/day, walking 5. I did regain 10 pounds & maybe that is the key. As a young man my BP was high & my dr. said lose a little weight & after losing 10-15 lbs it became normal. Maybe I have a low sweet spot for normal BP.

I’ve been Keto/carnivore for over 5 years. I lost weight and got off blood pressure. However, I had a hip injury that sort of set me back. I still eat Leto but have gained back weight and my blood pressure has crept back up. Can I contribute this to less exercise due to hip injury (been in physical therapy and have had chiropractic adjustments)? What can I just to in diet, etc., to figure out how to get back to a lower blood pressure, before my doctor suggests meds? I’m 55, in menopause (no symptoms). I have had ankle swelling at times. I also have hypothyroid disease and am on meds for that. The only other meds I take are vitamins. Suggestions?

They're aware. They just know that most people won't do it, or at least won't stick with it. My previous primary care physician (previous only because he moved out of the area) had a drawing on his exam room wall. It was of a large room with two desks, and a physician sitting behind each. One had a sign over it saying "Lifestyle Changes" and the other had a sign that said "Pills and Surgery." The Pills and Surgery desk had a very long line. The Lifestyle Changes desk had no line at all. Probably fairly accurate for most patients.
Great Question!I found my Keto Dr in Arizona….Dr Adam Nally…..he trained under DR Westman …..How I found my dr is through a naturalpathic dr I was seeing…..
One reason we are all labeled Hypertensive is that the Medical industry has lowered the number twice in the last 60 years. Once in the 50s and about 5 years ago. After it was lowered the second time 80 percent of Americans were now hypertensive and needed "medication". Hummmm
I think it’s even been lowered again, a third time, in recent months. It’s pretty obvious why this is happening. Greedy big pharma. They care about our money, not our health.
when you cut out the carbs and your blood pressure does get to the levels that are now advocated by medical societies as the new target, you will realize that they were saying this not to help big pharma but because the data has shown that these levels are what the blood pressure should be.
Thank you both for this interview!! I am wondering if Dr Westman has seen Cluster headache sufferers in his practice? And do they see an improvement or cessation of the headaches with the keto diet? The treatment or prevention of clusters involves using verapamil…. If verapamil were to be stopped, there is a risk of cluster headache resurgence…….so one might be reticent to try the keto diet unless others have had success before them, (that is no recurrence of the headaches). Any words of wisdom?
My husband has low fasting insulin and glucose, his A1C is 4.6. He’s on 3 blood pressure meds and still runs about 155/95. He eats keto/carnivore single ingredient foods and has for about 4 years. No seed oils. Maybe 10 pounds over ideal weight and is 54. What else should be checked?
Walking. 2 to 3 ten minute slow walks 5 days a week. SLOW walks help way more than fast walks. Then add intesoty.... 15 minute HIIT twice a week on the days you dont walk. You dont need much exercise at all, but just a little. This works for me and my older clients.
The only thing that got mine down to normal(I’m 53) was completely quitting alcohol.Just a couple of drinks here and there through the week blood pressure constantly high 150’s /90’s.quit drinking and 2 weeks later 120’s/ 70’s 80’s.
Well, the comment about alcohol was discouraging, but I may need to agree... I also take magnesium, which helps me control my anxiety, and I had noticed it helped my BP.

I would seriously consider moving to a more evenly-based diet, or animal-based. We need all the nutrients we can get and every meal should ideally be as nutrient-dense as possible. Since the highest amounts, and most usable forms of nutrients are found in animal foods, it makes little sense not to include large amounts of them in the diet.
Thank you so much for this video. 🤗 What are your thoughts about a cardiologist prescribing a very low dose of a BP med, just because you're a T2D? They say to protect the kidneys. BP is pretty normal.
@@AdaptYourLife I have been eating the Keto way of life on and off for about 3 yrs now. Life circumstances have lead me back and forth. There are times I am even more carnivore because I try to keep my carbs around 14 per day. That has brought my A1C down to 5.8 with about 1500mg of metformin per day. Unfortunately lifestyle and diet isn't always the answer. I've tried every diet from carnivore to vegan and have been extremely fit and healthy at various points in time in my life. Even with all of my metabolic numbers "in the green" the one thing I've never been able to get rid of is my BP meds. If I don't take them every day, it jumps way, way up the next day. Doctors assume it's genetic, but none of them really know what's going on and nobody has been able to figure it out. 🤷♂

What macros should someone with high blood pressure use to try to reverse condition?
Under 20g total carbs per day works wonders.
Another great and informative video! Thanks doc and Glen 😊
🙌
I use Benicar. It has not been changed even though I've lost 20 pounds and get regular bloodwork. Suggestions?
i had a heart-attack 20 yrs ago and they put a stent on my LAD. I did keto 4 yrs ago and now all my lipids are normal including my BP is even below normal. Can I stop taking my blood pressure medication? losartan and metoprolol? also, my rosuvastatin can be discontinued? hope to hear from you soon. thanks.
Hi Winston, well done on your success. Unfortunately Dr. Westman cannot advise you on medications via social media.
Try fasting and intermitting fasting. If you are in ketosis, it should be easier.
Hi Laura, Sorry for the hip injury. It seems you were progressing nicely on your success path, until your injury. It’s hard to pinpoint where your issue is without a lot more information. Have you considered taking Dr. Westman’s online course called “Keto Made Simple”? This may be precisely what you need to get back on track. You can join the waitlist here, 👇

I started keto before I started blood pressure medication.
If I don’t take it my blood pressure goes back up. Doctor suggested dash diet but it’s not keto at all
No keto friendly doctors in my area. Very few people understand keto where I live. I’ve lost a total of 37 pounds but still need to lose 35 more. I’m stalled.
Hi Elizabeth, we are about to launch a free, three week Keto Stall workshop with Amy Berger in the next week. Please make sure you are subscribed to our channel and look out for it.
I love eggs. Should I limit my eggs? I have high BP around 145/78 I take 1 BP med.
Eggs are fine. The most digestible and usable protein you can eat.
No need to limit eggs on a keto lifestyle
I think my hbp is caused by scar tissue on my infundibulum (caused by Sheehan Syndrome) which is interfering with my hormonal flow.
How can a doctor not be aware of lifestyle adjustments as an option to treat HBP?
They're aware. They just know that most people won't do it, or at least won't stick with it. My previous primary care physician (previous only because he moved out of the area) had a drawing on his exam room wall. It was of a large room with two desks, and a physician sitting behind each. One had a sign over it saying "Lifestyle Changes" and the other had a sign that said "Pills and Surgery." The Pills and Surgery desk had a very long line. The Lifestyle Changes desk had no line at all. Probably fairly accurate for most patients.

What was the name of the place to check for “keto-friendly” doctors?
Thx!
Great Question!I found my Keto Dr in Arizona….Dr Adam Nally…..he trained under DR Westman …..How I found my dr is through a naturalpathic dr I was seeing…..

my husband has 2 stents put in last year...he is doing prescriptive keto now...can he get off the bp meds?
💯
@@Mr.mister56 Interesting. That is something to test. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I learned that cortisol, insulin, and thyroid hormone all affect blood pressure. Thyroid maybe? Or adrenal gland problem?
Well, the comment about alcohol was discouraging, but I may need to agree...
I also take magnesium, which helps me control my anxiety, and I had noticed it helped my BP.
I have been on Metroprolol for 10+ yrs. Every s.i.n.g.l.e day I wake tired ( regardless of how much sleep) I constantly feel like...if I could just sleep a little longer I will feel rested. It NEVER happens. I thought...depression, sucky life, age, lack of proper excersize due to needing/pending 2 TKR, etc.
Now Dr wants me to take Amlodipine in addition.
Not sure what to do. Where do I turn? Should I just do as Dr orders until I can get past both of these TKR's? Any ideas anyone?
I have mostly clean plant based diet, very limited excersize due to inability atm. I can do H2O excersize and chair pilates & stationary bike. Thx in advance😍

Dr. Westman is an advocate of “de-prescribing” medication, not adding medications. Are you following Dr. Westman’s program?
@@AdaptYourLife I have been eating the Keto way of life on and off for about 3 yrs now. Life circumstances have lead me back and forth. There are times I am even more carnivore because I try to keep my carbs around 14 per day. That has brought my A1C down to 5.8 with about 1500mg of metformin per day. I know I have decades of repair and healing to do, but I can't see why a doctor would prescribe a BP med "just because". 🤦🏻♀️ So, to answer your question, I believe in Dr. Westman's concepts but have not necessarily "subscribed" to a program.
Guidelines for T2D are to keep the BP under 130/80. Dm patient are at a higher risk for cardiac events .
I was able to quit my BP medicine when I quit diet sodas most of which have Aspartame/Equal. Aspartame was killing me, ended up in the ER and hospital. Aspartame is poison.
Carnivore 1 year and hasn’t lowered my blood pressure yet. 😢
I think my BP is affected by my super low TSH. I am pretty reactive.
Never knew that about the thiazides! I’ve been on thiazides for over a decade now. Grrr.
What would you consider a no-side effect bp medicine?
Anyone know anything about Imdur? I'm off two others but still take Imdur. My numbers are wide apart. LIke 145 over 75 sometimes more of a span. ....The age comment covers my situation I think. I'm 78
I did keto I lost weight then I gained weight back on my blood pressure was always high then I did the high carb starch solution i lost weight my blood pressure dropped to its lowest then I read that ancel keys low fat dr lived till 100 I'm so confused what to eat I felt tired on keto angry did it for years
I would do what works for you.
@@AdaptYourLife but nothing seems to work long term keto worked ar first then all the weight comes back same when I did high carb lost weight at first gained it back thinking fasting is a disaster bullet proof coffee fat bombs it s a nightmare to many jumping on the you tube band wagon cud scream.
