    The age old debate of Dynamic mics vs. Condensor mics isn't new, but this is first time you'll hear someone tell you something pertinent to you recording in your own home.
    In this video I discuss the nature in which each one of these microphones interacts with their environments.

    Simple and to the point, I'm glad I found this video. Biggest issue in my house is ambient noise and my room is untreated where I'll record my voice so just picked up a dynamic mic. I have a stereo condenser mic that I use to record live music and outdoor sounds and couldn't help but notice it picking up EVERYTHING inside and outside. Thanks for making this video.

    A few years ago, I was looking for gear that could make my videos audio sound better. A friend of mine told me to buy a Tascam DR-05 digital recorder, and that it would make my audio have studio quality. Well, he was good intentioned, but SO wrong. The DR-05 mics are both condenser, and I don't have any treated room. Today, I recomend and warn people not to make the same mistake: if you're recording in a non-treated room, buy a dynamic mic. It'll do much better. I'm looking forward to get money to buy a 57 and a 58 in a near future!
    And last, but no least: do a really good research before buying gear!

      Cannot agree more. Lots of people who recommend condenser for acoustic/vocal performance fail to take into account the possibility you are in an untreated room. In an untreated room, it's not even a 'could go either way' thing, you GOTTA use dynamic over condenser. I have a Sm57 and Sm58 in an untreated room, and they pair nicely for stereo recordings in my bedroom studio, and I get very satisfying results. Especially for my style, dark tones and soft whisper like vocals.

      @@d-rockanomaly9243 I also have the SM57 as well as the SM58, and I concur, they are true powerhouses in small spaces! I also enjoy having the actual waveform that isn't overly compressed out of the gate. For example, many podcasting or speech platforms will not actually want things compressed beyond around -18LUFS, so it doesn't make sense to compress the waveform beyond where you can even use it, plus all the added noise... I'm glad to find others who are into dynamic mics! 😁✌

      @@formsaudio Yeah for sure. WIth condensers in my small space I had to roll off so much top end just to sound half decent and by that point it's muffled. Maybe I just don't know any better because I've never truly recorded in a professionally treated room, but I love how I can just play loud and close on the sm57/58 and not worry about clipping without touching the input signal, and I also love how responsive the recordings are to plugins. Oh and another plus I must have dropped or knocked the mouth of my 57 a hundred times and it just shrugs it off.

      People, since you probably have some knowledge about mics, I'd like to ask you one thing. I'd like to make recordings in an untreated room. Condenser mics provide a lot of quality but catch the reverb from the room. Dynamic mics sound somewhat thin compared to condensers but reject the room reverb nicely. I want to find an excellent balance between the sound richness and rejection capabilities. People always mention two mics to achieve this: SM7B and EV RE20. I'm currently inclined towards EV RE20 as it seems that this mic sounds richer. What would you advise me to achieve that nice balance that I mentioned above?

      @craigdaubbeats-rapinstrume9185 4 роки тому

      Yeah if you don't have a vocal booth or a treated room you have to get extremely creative to get good sound from a condenser mic. It is doable though. One option is to just get a huge box big enough to stand in and line it with foam. Another option (one I'm thinking of doing) is to just build a booth. You good do it relatively cheap if you're crafty enough and have access to lots of scrap wood. Gotta do what you gotta do when you don't have the funds. The good thing about that is sometimes you get some extremely good idea. Limitation breeds creativity.

    this guy is totally right. I use condenser mics often for vocals, but on the rare occasion, I have a vocalist that seems phasey in the mix. or is just way to loud. and so loud that even the room treatment isn't working. so I use my SM7B for those guys.

      what do u mean phasey?

    • @MrMetalclay
      @MrMetalclay 6 років тому

      Is the phasey sound due to the high end in the mic and more noticable through compression? If so I've had this problem with my vocals and drum overheads. I recently added a room mic to my drums and that remedied the problem by smoothing out the high end (killed lots of washy brittle high end). I'm wondering if just using two vocal mics with different characteristics would even out the frequency response of vocal recordings.

      I want to buy a mic to record my singing. I have a tenor-mezzo singing range, so I’m normally a bit louder while singing. I’m not really a fan of the deep tones that the dynamic mic gives, but if it is better I will get it. I have been looking at the Blue Snowball mic, do you think that would be ok for me?

    • @myman7336
      @myman7336 4 роки тому

      @@yourlocaltheatrekid900 People with deep voice are louder in the mix. Well, they're actually louder than people with higher pitched voice since their voice occupy more freq. Our ears are just more reactive to the high pitched ringing sound that people with high singing voice makes when they sing(I'm a tenor myself by the way so I know first hand). You'll probably be better off with a condenser if your room would allow you to use it comfortably.

      I was a noobie and I got Rode NT1, trying to record in an untreated room (renting one). Then, I borrowed the condenser to a friend, so I was left out with my old shure sm58 when I wanted to record some ideas - I was blown away on how much easier is it to get better sounding vocals with dynamic mic that way. I guess I probably will record whole album with shure now until I get better treatment in the room. :)

    Nice video Lewin!
    I would also add that I think dynamic microphones are very useful when recording a vocalist who is also playing another acoustic instrument. For instance, when I play piano, I have problems using with my condenser microphone because it picks up unwanted mechanical noises coming from the piano. I either have to take advantage of the cardioid pattern of the microphone by angling it upward or sing really close to the microphone and lower the gain. The trade off is that I have to do a lot of work in post for the vocal track to not sound boomy, because the placement of the microphone picks up more of my chest voice. Alternatively, I can easily set-up a dynamic microphone to minimize those sounds.
    The cons of using a dynamic is that it just takes a lot more gain, which can lead to more noise in the recording unless you're working with stellar preamps. I typically use a microphone activator (like the Cloudlifter CL-1) for my dynamic, so I don't have to max-out my preamps. I also find that the tone of dynamic microphones are much darker than many dynamics, which could be a problem I guess depending on the genre of music.
    Anyway, that's my two cents. Thanks again for making awesome videos.

  • @MrMetalclay

    Great comparison! I find the biggest difference is the frequency response. The condensor has more high end, but it will also pick up more horrible ess and nasal sound, room reflection (usualy the polar pattern picks up a little behind the mic) and the sensitivity of the capsule will overload much easier. The sm57 can handle lots of volume and has great rear rejection, it's not overly bright and picks up good mids. Supposedly you can put tape around the vents of the sm57 and it will act like an omnidirectional mic. There's lots of cheaper dynamic mics that can be used for vocals, but the sm57 has got to be the most rugged. I'm also interested in hearing a comparison with a ribbon mic.

    While the SM57 does a better job at rejection here, I'm not sure it's really as simple as this. The e100 while nominally having a narrower polar pattern, possibly has a wider pickup at certain frequencies (I don't know for sure because there is no multifrequency pattern reading available). Small diaphragms supposedly have more consistent polar pattern. Also the mics have very different frequency responses, which probably changes how it picks up the RT60 at certain frequencies.

    I have an SM57, practically brand new hooked up to a Scarlett 2i2 interface with a Fethead for dynamics in between the mic and a Mogami XLR cable (the best in the biz). With this setup, I still have to turn the gain up to 12:00 just to hear myself, and I get RF interference coupled with the mic’s self noise as well. And the signal is still pretty weak even from 5.5 inches away.

I watched an old video of yours where you talk about how to perform to a mic when recording vox. Pulling away for louder singing and getting closer for quieter parts. You can just aswell recomend Sm58 aswell for vocal use. Since 57 "poofing" much easier. I’ve read that 57 and 58 have the same hardware inside. But i’ve also heard difference in sound between those in same song repeated with both. The difference is to difficult to describe. And was so barely noticeable at some points. In those moments i gave the 57 the thumb up there. But vocally the 57 receive to easy those poofs(blasts). But they are warm, and when other mics suit some dongs better then the Shure becomes very warm, soft and absorbing to compare😊 it’s first after trying others and repeat with the Shure Sm58 i noticed it. I don’t like Shure less. It’s the mic yet which have sounded good through many genres of music and sing styles. To compare one mic is better then the Shure in some songs sounds again quite bad in other songs😊 strange that some artists don’t change mics for advantage for some songs😊

    • @biteme263
      @biteme263 4 роки тому

      I don't think the Meteor USB mic is what most would consider a "condenser mic". A usb mic be it a condenser or dynamic is not going to be ideal for doing voice overs. Certainly not if you are looking to make money at doing it. For youtube or something then ya, it will probably be fine. My guess would be stepping up to any microphone using a seperate pre amp/interface is going to sound better. Doesn't matter if its a dynamic or condenser. It will up your cost by quite a bit though. You are looking at probably 200 bucks or more by the time you get the mic, interface, cables and possibly a stand, mount and filter. Probably cheaper if you go with some cheap chinese thing. I saw a set up on Walmart that came with a stand, filter, interface and mic for like 50 bucks. It was using one of the BM 800's and a cheap interface. Not sure how great that would sound either, but I have heard they don't sound "bad". As for doing voice work it depends on where you are doing it. If its a sound treated room or studio with a very low noise floor then a decent condenser mic and pre amp is what I would go with. And I don't mean like a 500 dollar mic and expensive pre amp. Probably sub 100 dollar mic and a pre amp in the 100-150 dollar range should be fine. Might find a deal on one for less even. If it isn't a studio or treated room, like its just your den or a bedroom with bare walls and stuff with a fan, comptuer, furnace/aircon ect running or you can hear ambient noise from other rooms or outside then a dynamic mic might be the way to go. Then set up a noise gate and stuff to help filter out background noise. Condenser mics sound great and have lots of detail but they will pick up everything around them really well. That is one of their downsides.

    Thanks for this, I’ve been using my Rode NT1 condenser in a massive room with no treatment, hardly any furniture and wooden floor. It doesn’t get much worse than that for a condenser environment, I want to switch to a good broadcast headset instead of a large “in your face” mic, and I’m looking at the BPHS2 dynamic from Audio Technica, or the BPHS2C condenser and I’m now leaning towards the dynamic, it also has a hypercardioid pattern vs cardioid on the condenser version

    if you want to start a podcast show (audio and video) and want to involve eating and drinking with at least 2-3 people, what would be the best audio set up? I want the audios to pick up while we're eating the food (sure, a bit of asmr if you will), as well as when we're just talking, obviously. Should I get one of these condenser or dynamic mics? Or a clip-on mic? or the overhead mic?

    • @GaragebandandBeyond

      It depends on what kind of a room you're in really. If it's a space that doesn't have a ton of natural reverb, you should be able to get away with condenser microphones, which would be better at picking up eating sounds.
      But if your room does have a lot of reverb in it, dynamic mics will work, the eaters just have to stay closer to the mic.

      @@GaragebandandBeyond thank you for your quick response. Truly appreciate it. And to answer your questions. We will be in a warehouse space. And I'm thinking about laying down/hanging some blankets all around the room to sound proof it somewhat. My only concern is how close do we have to be to the dynamic mics for it to not lose signals? I do prefer the dynamic mics like Shure SMB7, specially since it's recommended for muti-people podcast. However, I'd like everyone to be able to eat as they would normally at a dining table without having to come close to the mic for it to pick up sound or even just to keep the lvls the same and just carry on a conversation, as couple of people would at a diner table. I'm not like the visuals I'm picturing, everyone having to hunch close to the mic and talk and having to get the mic out of the way to take a bite.

      @@TheTrippleTKA Keep in mind that withe the SM7b you will good preamps to be able to get what you want. They are low gain mics. I have, use and love mine all the time.
      In a warehouse blankets really won't do much at all, so yes dynamics would be a good choice. The SM58 is also a very good choice for podcasting and a lot less expensive and you won't need any external preamps. It depends on your budget, but they are good option, especially if you're getting started.
      To answer your question about "how close to mic". If they are turned up properly and have enough gain, you can be about 1-2ft away sand still get the sounds you want.

  • @zzsolo72
    @zzsolo72 Рік тому

    Strongly disagree. Microphones don't "interact" with the room. Imagine a thermometer. It measures the temperature of the air around its heat sensor and tells us how warm it is. Does it interact with the room? No. Now take a microphone. It measures SPL in front of (or around) the diaphragm. Does it change anything in the room? No, not really.
    Does the sound wave approach a condenser mic differently than a dynamic? No, absolutely not.
    The difference is no myth.There is no "interaction". There is faster and more precise measurement (typically done by condenser mics) and there is slower and less accurate measurement (guess what).
