    There's a company called Arisaka that makes a super handy leveling kit. Also, when doing load development with my big magnum rifles, I wait 5-7 minutes between shots depending on ambient temperature. Cold bore shots matter the most for hunting rifles.

    I have the same scope. Amazing clarity! Takes the abuse of my braked 300PRC well. If you only have a single level put action in a vise, use an ordinary level on the rail or action. After leveling the action and you can use a plumb bob string to check for tilt while looking through the scope.

      Dirk, would you do a cleaning of that rifle as well? I picked up a lot of tips and tricks I enjoyed your scope /mount/setup. Maybe you have a cleaning presentation that would be better than what I’m doing 👍🏻😃 i’d be interested in seeing a rifle cleaning video. 😃👍🏻 luv those big bore magnums!

    For eye relief I like to be zoomed all the way in on something. Close your eyes and then get the gun comfortable and a proper cheekweld. Then open your eyes and you should have a full clarity edge to edge in the scope.

    338wm is a thumper. I'm not a fan of a lead sled more of a sandbag guy. I want the most natural recoil and that velcro strap that's under your scope will not let it do so. Your groups will tighten up trust me. My elk toy is a 300RUM 700PSS with a custom trigger at 1.25#. I work all the time these days and don't get to shoot like I use to. But I keep my small bores pretty warm. Lol! Can't wait to watch your season roll out.

    I've had nothing but inconsistency when sighting in with a lead sled. An old timer told me to throw it in the trash because it does not let the rifle react to the kick naturally. Thought he was full of it. Best group I could get with my Creedmoor was about 2" at a hundred yards. Without adjusting anything I was shooting under half inch group at 100 with bipod and rear sand bag. And this was with my 6.5 Ruger Precision with the Leopold VX6 HD. Should give it a try Dirk, it may really improve your grouping. Good Luck.

    • @vitaly6312
      @vitaly6312 4 роки тому

      Had a .4 3 shot grouping with my 6.5cm on a led sled. Then a .8 on a bipod afterwards.
      Nothing wrong with a led sled. Better tools out there for sure, but if you’re having issues zeroing or grouping with a 6.5cm on a led sled then it’s likely user error.

    I do mine the way we did it in the military I use a one piece base which I devcon to receiver and natural shoe polish as a release agent I use blue loctite on base screws. I use leupold rings so no lapping needed . I level gun vise then use levels on rifle and scope to prevent canting . Also when tightening cross bolts be sure to apply light forward pressure on scope and rings to seat recoil lugs against base cross slot

    52years old and had forgotten all about the deck of cards trick. My dad used a deck of cards when I knocked my scope mounts lose when I was 14 or 15 at elk camp down on the St. Joe. 5 shots and we were zeroed & ready for the next day. When we rolled back to town, took the rifle down to the gun smith and he said he couldn't have done any better job of getting the scope set and about fell over when the old man explained how he did it.
    Bugling at a gun range using a water bottle is NEXT LEVEL!
    P.S. Leupold scopes for the WIN! They stand behind their scopes 100%. I sent My dads 300 Win Mag 1970's 3x9 Leupold that they sealed & gased for me 5years ago no questions asked when I sent it in with a letter explaining it was my dads & now mine.

    I see it's been a year since you made this video. Those are Warne rings, just in case you've forgotten what brand they are this year. I always mount my rings and lap them before they ever touch my scopes so that they don't dent or torque my scope when I tighten down the screws to 25-inch pounds.

    Good video, been shooting scoped rifles for over 50 years. I have mounted (on also changed back and forth🤓) a few scopes. Never seen the card trick before. An old Oregon Coast Range boy who is loyal to Leupold. Still use my original 3X9 I bought in 1976. Currently on a 700 25/06. It has been on two different .300 Wins and three 25/06s. A little bit of meat has gone into the freezer with it. Just checked; 9 rifles From 22 250 to 338 Win in the vault topped with Leupold. Doesn’t matter what the rifle make is, it has to have a Leupold. As others have mentioned, I did not have good luck with a sled as far as getting an accurate group when testing loads. While watching this I wondered if you were going to use one post shoulder surgery and my question was answered. Thank you for your videos

      Damn straight it deserves respect! It'll bite if you ain't careful 🤣.......my dad has a 338 ultra mag he bought when they first came out, mounted the scope, sighted in. Well we were talking the difference between the ultra and 338 win mag recoil so out the door we go. He bought me a rem 700 stainless synthetic 338 for graduation and they had it scoped and bore sighted at our favorite hardware/gun store in Eastern oregon, so me being a dumbass throws it up to shoot at a rim rock a few hundred yards above our house.......uphill.......and torched er off. Ya, scope was mounted good but in my haste and excitement didn't account for recoil on the uphill angle and the ol bag tagged me on the bridge of the nose and between the eyes 🤣.............barely drew blood but sonuvabeach, I think that's what everyone else felt that ever fought Mike Tyson!!

    I’ve tried blue lock tight on the bottom of my base seems to work. Not as permanent as jb weld. I just need to get a better scope for my 300 rum. It seems to break scopes. And those are Warne rings. I use them too. The kid (13 years old, his first elk)and I knocked 2 elk down in 2 back to back days. 50 yards apart. It was a fun weekend. Torque spec for those rings is 25 inch lbs. Warne doesn’t recommend lapping on those rings. Ever since I found those rings I won’t buy anything else. My cow this year took 3 rounds from my 300 wby 200 grain eldx this year, they are crazy tough animals. I wish I would of had my 338 lapua.

    I love a 338 for elk too Dirk! They're damn tough and you hit em with a 338 and they know it, not saying it's the end all elk caliber ever invented but I shoot 250 gr Remington core-lokt and have NEVER shot over 100 yards at an elk with it so bullet drop doesn't pertain. I hunt mahogany and fir thickets which generally means if there's an elk in it........it'll almost be combat lol. And a 250 gr bullet will shuck a lot of veggy without deflecting so if I can see the outline he's gonna pack one, may take a follow up shot, but it'll still rock their world! Say what you will but when I clean fir needles or whatever vegetation out with the heart and lungs, I'd say the load is working. Don't shoot fast enough to ruin meat and packs the energy of a train, for how I hunt I can't complain a bit. I've killed 3 elk that weren't with my 338 and it felt wrong lmao, two with a 7mm rem mag and one with a 7mm-08 and because I was so used to a 338, put of habit I pulled up, shoulder, wooom!!! Ruined 3 shoulders............wanted to kick my own ass. My ol man has three 338 win mags and a 338 ultra, you thought a win mag was impressive on am elk.........oh buddy! You slow the ultra mag down to 2900-3000 feet a second (for our style elk hunting) and oh my Lanta does it flatten an elk!!!
    Besides, why make leak holes in an elk when you cam make drain holes? And unless it goes through a tree (literally through the stem or very large branches)..........you always get perfect shrummage

  • @paulellsworth7679
    @paulellsworth7679 3 роки тому

    You were dead on correct that so many of the newer better quality rings do not need lapped. And I understand your logic for not lapping them even if they aren't the better quality rings to get a better hold, but I think you may find that lapped rings would actually hold better because of more consistent contact from the ring to the scope. Even if it is smoother... specifically because it is smoother.
    Lesser quality rings only make solid contact in a very small percentage 30-50% without lapping whereas by lapping then you can get almost double.
