    I don't like this performance. But this is not a formal concert anyways. That's what I like about Lang Lang. He can be world-class pianist when the audience includes lovers and masters who knows and appreciates classical music. But he could also be a great entertainer when the audience are just average Joe's and just wants to see "cool" techniques and piano banging. And from their clapping during the performance, I believe the latter case is true here. That, in my opinion, is the definition of a great performer. He always makes his audience happy.

    • @Pixeliarmus
      @Pixeliarmus 5 років тому +41

      Agreed. If only he played it a little slower though... Even if you're "banging" the piano , actually hearing what notes he's playing would be nice, some beautiful parts of the piece just dissappears when played too fast

    Lang Lang has played the extended Horowitz version before. The transition at 1:43 was almost certainly intended to save time. We've all heard the 2nd Hungarian Rhapsody... the audience doesn't want to waste a quarter of an hour listening to Horowitz's interpretation. These people ain't looking to hear the full 10-12 min version of this piece, they looking to hear some cool classical-style music. You don't want to try to cram a full classical performance into a music festival.
    Btw the people clapping midway through is completely inappropriate in a formal classical setting. That was not a formal classical setting.

      People here don't get liszts philosophy for music. He was the pioneer of the master class, and couldn't give a shit about the notes. He'd paraphrase write different interpretations, and "reinvent the wheel" for many things. He'd absolutely have critics in his day in the exact way people critise Lang Lang for not been traditional and "playing it properly".

    People applauding while the pianist is playing : this is the perfect definition of what Lang Lang does to music. He makes it a circus performance, all about what a great virtuose he is. He’s not trying to dedicate himself to the music : he’s dedicating the music to himself.

      @@jezielknopf3852 Dude, he's playing Liszt here. You're supposed to be a show off when playing Liszt, and Liszt was a huge showoff himself. These pieces are supposed to draw lots of applause and be crowd pleasers. They were composed to let the pianist showoff their technical skills after all.

    Imagine you go to a concert in 1847. You've never heard a music recording before because recording wouldn't even be invented for over a decade. Liszt comes on the stage and plays this piece, newly composed and never before heard by the public. You'd loose your damn mind. And I mean, I guess people did. Lisztomania was a thing for a reason, and it's no wonder if you think about hearing this kind of insanity for the first time.
