When red squirrels find acorns, they stash them in secret locations hoping others don't find them. What are your thoughts on this unique game of hide and seek?
I cant believe they dont show just how in-depth this "game" gets. If a squirrel knows it is being watched as it hides food, it will actually only pretend to bury it! Then bury it in a different location when the thief squirrel is busy trying to find the acorn they THINK is hidden there! They are very savvy!
Imagine all November and December people just broke into your house and stole everything out your refrigerator everytime you were gone! I'd be like WTF too.😫😭
@@madisoncastle5138 We have personally witnessed competition between American red squirrels and blue jays as well. American red squirrels take nonsense from neither gray squirrels nor blue jays!
Don't be fooled that red squirrels are cute. Sometimes they can be very aggressive. The jay is a master of imitation. Squirrels are afraid of falcons. So The jay can imitate the hawk sound very well.
Here in Canada our red squirrels are really more red, they don't have the grey in their coats and they do not have the ear tufts. But they share that competitive personality, they often fight or chase each other.
It probably is. I know that in guinea pigs, it is caused by overdosing on calcium and dehydration. Keeping a squirrel well-hydrated while also watching its calcium intake should help prevent cystitis.
Many, many years of independent evolution in very different habitats. But usually European red squirrels prefer hazelnuts and chestnuts over acorns - but that is probably dependent on the amount and type of food available in the region.
Eurasian red squirrels are more closely related to gray squirrels than American red squirrels. What's more confusing is why unrelated Eurasian and American red squirrels have such a similar preference for conifer seeds. But both American and Eurasian red squirrels will eat acorns.

Here in the U.K we feed the red ones and kill the Greys. They are disease ridden and threaten our ecosystem.
Fun fact: this battle plays out the same way in the US but with blue jays and gray squirrels 🧐🧐
Yes, it certainly does!

Squirrels... they are so competitive and funny. Sadly losing some acorns due to stealing can lead to death during winter.

Woow Nice. Who love nature comment!!
What are the main differences between the Grey Squirrel and the Red Squirrel?
Why don't they pick it from the tree themselves instead of stealing it?
Looks just like that lycanthrope from van helsing.
Wow amazing shoot and information
Regionally, some things don't change. Here in the US, gray squirrels and blue jays interact in the same way.
That’s right!
Yeah!
Why steal acorns?
Nation Geographic: Are you fluent in English?

Can someone tell me if developing cystitis is normal in domesticated squirrels??
It probably is.

Our red squirrels in Scotland love eating hazel nuts.
How come red squirrels in Europe eat acorns but the ones in the US only eat pinecones??

How do you call the juvenile of a squirrel. And no its not baby squirrel...
A baby squirrel is sometimes called a kit. However, calling it a "baby" squirrel is also considered correct.
