How do I get started in the PEI school system?

Before your child can start school in PEI they must register. School begins with kindergarten when your child is five years old and finishes in Grade 12. Most students who move to Prince Edward Island from another province register directly with their new school, however, children who were born outside of Canada or who speak a language other than English or French in their home must register with the English as an Additional Language/French as an Additional Language Reception Centre. Staff of the EAL/FAL Reception Centre will assess each student's language proficiency and assist you with school registration. The Prince Edward Island Association for Newcomers to Canada can also provide support as you prepare your child for school, including answering questions and providing you with an interpreter for parent/teacher interviews and meetings. Parent/teacher interviews are held a few times a year so that you can discuss your child's progress with his or her teacher. These interviews are just one way that you as a parent can make sure that your child is getting the most out of his or her school experience.
