The Canon R5 is good but RF lenses are costly specially the 100-500 at 7.1 for Mammals (the background separation is much less than f4.5). The blackout free viewfinder with live view is really sweet. Great review, I have both the Z9 and Z8 and love them. You’re right about picking the right AF settings depending on the situation. Nice review Jan! Actually sometimes I have same issues with Z9´s AF and probably will be fixed with firmware soon, cause AF identifies object but lens does not focus. That issue happen mostly with Z 70-200 2.8 and longer zooms except with AF-I 300 2.8 lens (guess is algorythm stuff). With AF-I focus always search for closer objects and surprisingly, this old lens peforms perfect on Z9. Yes, it weights a ton! Beside that issue, obtained 100% accuracy shooting my pupp coming towards me at 120fps, also recording at 4K 120fps and 8K 60fps N-RAW, Af was perfect! So is just about tme. Had used all systems and ended up with Nikon Z, which brought to my use case much more stability and quality for less money on extreme conditions as hybrid shooter (on sunny, night, or heavy rain journey... press, summer parades in Latin America for many hours a whole month, hiking, sports, portrait, studio, indoor dance competitions, pole dancing, landscape, social, product). Salute there from Uruguay!
I have the Z9 and have used the wide L autofocus box along with 3D tracking, but the slimmer/smaller custom box doing a better job against busier background is pretty huge! Thanks for the excellent info!
Great video. You really understand the Nikon Z8-9 autofocus better than I do. It is really more like semi-automatic than full automatic as you suggested in your video. Skill counts, as you show. Also persistence and knowing where to go. Thanks for this video.
It has its moments both ways. It works very well overall, but at times one wishes it would be a bit more “proactive” in finding the subject and sticking with it. The full automatic mode similar to how Canon works is not as reliable as the other modes but has already improved a lot over the years
Excellent real world review and hopefully Nikon can fix some of those auto focus bugs with firmware updates. In saying that, you managed some work-arounds. An astonishing piece of hardware that will only get better over time. Cheers mate and keep the great vlogs rolling in👍
I just feel like once you get into this price range for cameras all issues circle around nitpicks and brand loyalty because ALL of these cameras in the 3000+ price range are more than capable of delivering stellar results.
Steve Perry points out that subject detection needs to have the subject close to in focus to work well. Pre-focus / manual focus to get give the subject detection a head start.
I need to remember to watch your videos with my camera in hand. Always useful tips and agree with the comments section...appreciate solutions more than bashing. Got sooo many great images with my Z7's and Z6's that I got because I tweaked and tested. Appreciate your channel.
agree. its utterly unacceptable. and Nikon wonders why most folks now take images with their phones and are not attracted to legitimate photography anymore. pricing is insane.
I work with cameras in industry to perform in-line inspections on production lines, and shrinking the area box on the Z8 is comparable to reducing the “region of interest” for a search tool on one of those cameras, and creating a smaller region of interest is the easiest way to reduce the processing time of the tool, as you’re asking the camera to evaluate less information (smaller region is less pixels to process). Tony N did a video on the Z9 where he said the autofocus recognition worked noticeably better on that camera in DX mode as well, likely for the same reason.
Thanks for sharing! Makes sense. I didn’t think about the computing power needed to scan that larger area, so that makes a lot of sense and explains why also the subject recognition works better
@@jan_wegener Maybe you could use it more generally (smaller area) and report back, although I am guessing all the Nikon kit has gone back now? Great video regardless Jan
Thanks for the video. I picked up my Z8 May 25th, working great with my Z9. Both have a place and “ best” use. In the field nice to have telephoto on one wide on the other. Or longer hike just the Z8. Just used both on a job, combo worked very well. Not worried on overheating, no plans to be doing any thing where it could be an issue. Focus takes time to learn what works best.
I've seen reviews on the Z 24-70 glass, and the sharpness results are exceptional when coupled with the Z8. Your review however makes me realize the Z8 AF tracking is still a little half-baked: when you need it most, performance is a little off (i.e. locking background and not staying with the object in flight). I'm hoping Nikon ups the hardware processing power and/or fine-tunes the software in subsequent models to rectify the issue. Until then, I'll be sticking with the 6 year ol' D850. 😆 Thank you for the informative review.
I have been using the D850 for years. Been a work horse. Just received the Z8 last week and I can tell you in every capacity the Z8 is better. No comparison
I use the AFF for the focusing. I get better results with my Nikon APSC/DX & Full Frame/FX cameras. I do not own the Z9 and Z8 but I do have the rest of the mirrorless Z cameras. Cheers!
Good to see Nikon back in the game. This is the camera I wish Nikon released back in 2020. Got an R5 instead because the Z7II was disappointing - EVF, AF tracking and burst performance, and buffer were not competitive with Canon and Sony. The Z8 is what the Z7II should have been.
Great video! Very helpful, as always. Considering switching from the Sony A1. Love the autofocus, but I struggle with handheld video.Would love your opinion on the autofocus compared to the A1.
@@jan_wegener Thanks Jan 😊 I think I need to test one myself to see how much behind the Z8 is for photos, because for filming the A1 is pretty annoying. I also don't like having to select eyefocus for either animals or birds...sometimes I forget
@@LindaSmitWildlifeImpressions yes that’s quite annoying. Yes, filming with the A1 isn’t a lot of fun unless it’s on a tripod etc. sort of quickly switching between photo and video or handholding doesn’t work that great
Great video. I had the same problem with my Z8 and 800mm PF. The camera would not focus quickly enough on the bird in flight when it suddenly took off. I have changed my focus buttons to the same as yours, thanks for the tips
my sony a1 with a 200-600 lens is 7lbs. Weight is a big concern for me. The Z8 with an 800mm lens would be about 7.5lbs so not much more - it's got me thinking about switching back to Nikon. I already carry 4 batteries for the Sony so extra batteries is not a concern.
Beautiful Osprey pictures Jan. I have the Z9 and just got the Z8 as my second body. Going to try your recommendation regarding focusing. Thanks for the tips!
I've been a Canon guy for many years. I have a BlackMagic 6K, now, but still using Canon lenses with it. But, the Z8 is making me seriously consider switching to Nikon, as the Canon R1 is still nowhere in sight.
A good honest review about the pros and cons of the Z8, I'm really considering getting this camera in a few months, my best local photographic gear shop, ORMS in Cape Town has been doing great specials on all the best mirrorless brands. I hope the Z8 will be on that promotion list soon😅, great images and video as always Jan.
Excellent review! Thanks for the honest approach! When I buy my Z8 I will need to adapt my older F Mount lenses for a while! I’d love to see a review on how well that works! Thanks!
Thanks Jan for your great input and agility to overcome problems and explain how, very professional! I own the Z7+400mm and obviously struggle with autofocus with birds in general, bird recognition is not on the Z7 so really autofocus is the problem. The solution of the most common problem of the Z camera's in general is to acquire autofocus on objects closer than the current focal plane. There is a simple solution to that: turn the focus ring yourself 🙂. Yes really if you know your lens you can very fast acquire inital focus and then let the camera take control. Some people seem to forget that is still a viable solution. Understand that when comparing to the R5 it works easier when the camera is smarter to recognize objects, but makes people forget that there is something like a little manual input, I created a habit of doing this and it helps a lot with the Z7.
Yes manually intervening is a great way to assist my AF and I do that a lot, too. Just a bit harder on a lens like the 600 TC cause the ring is so far back that it’s hard to reach when handholding
@@jan_wegener there should also be a focus recall button feature I've used on my z6 and 70-200. Hit one button and it pulls focus back to where you set it.
Thanks for the info and those beautiful images. Very nice. Am relatively new to this level of photography and been hitting the YT vids a lot. Yours was quite helpful. I recently purchased a Z8 and a Z6ii. Mostly been doing astrophotography for the past year. But wanted an MIL to get images of DSO, planetary, and solar. And maybe that illusive UAP??!! Thanks again and I did sub!
I like that you had an issue to overcome and you adapted instead of just saying in summary it cant focus in auto everything. Craft is craft. love this overview
@@jan_wegener I absolutely love these images, i can see them printed on my wall tbh, i have just painted our hallway and have 3 slots for frames. Do you sell images?
to use Z8 with 4-6 batteries is against every good natural behavior - as little batteries as possible are best for nature and biodiversity! I will stay with Z9 - Z 8 has only shadows against Z9. Your examples with AF are good and right - but Canon and Sony do a lot easier and more precise then Nikon! And even OM-1 can do it with a little tweaking! So Nikon has a lot to improve on autofocus tracking for animals! But the reason why I use Nikon nevertheless is the big bajonett which allows to use all Sony-Bajonett lenses without any loss with the megadap and because Nikon has 24-120 mm, 6.3/800 mm, 4.5/400 mm and 400 / 600 mm TC !
There's been a recent firmware update, so let's get some things straight. I don't have any overheating anymore on my Z8! I can use inexpensive Angelbird Pro SE 512gb CFexpress cards for everything, even RAW video at whatever frame rate. I've tested it in disbelief, but it's working! Anyways, after a few months with mine, I can begin to let go of my Sony gear (A7SIII and A7IV) to make way for another Z8. Yes, the Sony's have an advantage with low-light and long distance focusing, but it's not enough of a difference to hold on to Sony image quality; the Nikon is clearly much better in that regard. No more plasticky Sony video. No more fiddling with color from indoor shots because the Sony couldn't handle mixed lighting, the Nikon just does normal color. And the kicker is that all of my manual lenses have autofocus via the Techart TZM-02 manual lens autofocus adapter, even with video. Can't have that with my Sony gear. So this thing takes Z mount lenses I suppose. I do have two, but it also adapts my E-mount lenses too! Then to make things more fun, I can stack my EF-E adapter onto the E-Z adapter and it will work with my EF lenses! That is so freaky. This camera is the super, swiss army knife of cameras.
I'm glad I learned photography during the age of manual cameras (late 60's) (Nikon F). You learned to use your eye to find photos, not machine gunning at 120fps. I realize that bird and sports photography requires different technology. However, mindlessly holding down the shutter release for a few seconds and then having to spend hours sorting through thousands of images to find 'the right one' is extremely counter productive. It is not photography.
How do you feel it compares to the R5 from an auto focus standpoint? Do you feel like your struggles with the auto focus were from your bias and typical use of canon or do you think it is a setback for Nikon? I’m about to upgrade from a Nikon P1000 to a mirrorless set up, and narrowing down Nikon versus canon and which ecosystem I want to dive into. You make awesome videos and I’m a big fan.
Damn, if only Nikon had allowed us to very simply flip a switch to open a battery bay and quickly change out a battery (usually only required once a day). Oh, that's right, they have! I don't know why battery life has to show up in every review. It's fine! I don't even want to carry around an extra half pound of battery in the camera if I'm really going to carry it all day, as the use case suggests. I'm not targeting just this review, which is actually quite good. I'd just like to hear some predominantly positive reviews about the amazing technology that Nikon is putting out.
As always Jan, great review. The Z8 is awesome camera for the professional market. As hobbyist photographer, I can't justify the cost of the Z9 or Z8. So I keep waiting and hoping that Nikon will introduce more affordable cameras for hobbyist photographer. A D500 replacement with IBIS and similar AF to the Z9/Z8 would be awesome.
Excellent video and I was reassured that the z8 is still better than having problems, but there is still one concern, if possible, I would like a tutorial video or a link on how to get rid of this noise? The iso 12000 that you did, the end result was fucking great.
I have had the z8 for about a week , I already have the z611. and a couple of D6 bodies , I am still finding issues with the AF its all over the place , i'm only using it for editorial , im not getting rid of those F mont bodies yet
Looking at the Z8 and trying to find out more about it. Using my Z6ii for 1.5 years and I want, notice not need, a camera that is snappier overall and stickier in autofocus.
Great video and fantastic advice on a workaround using large area autofocus. You seem to have addressed this where others have just complained about it. Thank you 👍
This is one of the best reviews of the Z8 (or any camera) you are the only person I have heard make some honest complaints but then offer some solutions. My words are not doing my thoughts justice…superbly insightful review, you found a new fan today!
Great vlog for bird photography it would be even better if you didn't do this thing with your voice that is lowering the volume at the end of each sentence.
Thank you so much for sharing another wonderful video like always Jan, awesome review but my favorite part of the video was those amazing Osprey photos, I love Osprey and I photograph four of them almost every day in a bird sanctuary next to my home. 🐦❤👍🤗
Thanks for the comprehensive review, I currently shoot with a Z6 but was considering the Z8 as a new primary camera. This review is really helpful in helping me move closer to making that decision.
Great review of the Z8. Jan is testing extensively, but without prejudice. Awesome comments and useful tips. With both the Z9 and Z8, Nikon seems to be back. Thank you, Jan!
Hi Jan. I am a Z9 user and used Nikon since 1988. Your experience with other brands, brings a fresh outlook to your reviews. They are very balanced I believe and truthful. I will not be buying the Z8, although a great camera, because, I like the larger built in grips and build. I have had very little failure with auto focus, but must admit I have had similar issues to the ones you highlighted. I’ve tried your idea and it works. I sometimes use C1 wide minimum size as well. All allocated to buttons. So far, (touch wood)! 100% success. Thank you for an easy solution to a nagging issue. Excellent site and comments, thanks, TonyH
Absolutely an amazing review... Very nicely put together... And there are some great insights... The photography and videography were awesome as always... I already have the Z9... Bought it initially as I wanted the best Nikon camera for autofocus... But it was a tad heavy for me for my portraiture... For wildlife it was fine... Now considering the Z8... Thanks a million for the great information...
Great review when I saw the title I thought it was going to be another Nikon bashing how wrong I was, really enjoyed your attitude to find a solution for the AF issue only just got me Z8 so learning as I go many thanks.
Thank you! UA-cam titles are a bit of a game of their own. Have to find something that makes people click. But I don’t engage in senseless trashing of anything. I just like to share how I experienced things and what work around I find for each brand to make it the best possible
Fantastic review and description on how to use various settings. I am trading in a Z7 for a Z8. I love all my Z lenses and now it looks like I will have a camera body that will last for a very, very, long time. Thanks.
After hearing all the complaints about battery life, I was pleasantly surprised with my first shoot last night. I had over a thousand raw frames with backup over a period of four hours before I decided to switch out (and that was at 2/5 level.) Similar performance to my Z6ii. I don’t know if it helped, but I had the camera in airplane mode, too.
@@bobbullethalf The 3D AF on the Z8 has made me so giddy. Just like back on my D750s. I've only ran through one assignment on it so far, but I feel the Z8 is a clear step or two up from a Z6ii. It is truly joyful shooting with the Z8.
I only watch reviews from skilled photographers who are actually able to capture amazing photos out in the field. This review ABSOLUTELY fits that description.... thank you for this!!
Hi! Great review! An awesome and solid camera. But, then again, so it was the Z9. I think that the AF issues can be solved with firmware updates, so it will be consistent in the future. Cameras now are built to last and, if you buy this camera or the Z9, I don’t see anyone REALLY needing a new camera for the next 10 years… This is some next level gear and for a good price to boot. The Canon R5 is another good example of this, but it could use a better sensor and better dynamic range. Other than that, professionals are pleased All best!
Jan, this is absolutely one of the best review that I have seen. But not surprised as you are providing such great content. You have shot with Canon and Nikon. Which camera system do you believe handles best (if any) in terms of F mount vs EF mount lenses? Let’s say a Nikon 400mm FLED with Z8 vs a Canon EF 400mm with R5?
Good clear, well explained review. I was thinking of getting one, but the price here in Australia is ridiculous. Camera Electronic here in Perth, had a release evening last week and I played with one. It was nice and will be a great bit of kit for the hard working sports or bird pro. However, at $7,000 body only, and for me, that would be 14K, for two cameras - that would maybe only give me bit of an advantage. I shoot events, gigs and weddings. I use two Z6ii's and actually find them really great cameras. I shot a big all day event recently, took nearly 2K photos, and under 20 of them would haver been out of focus. If you are familiar with your gear, put it on the right settings, position yourself properly and have your schtick down-pat, they are actually very useable cameras. For what I do, I do not want those huge files bogging down my 27 inch iMac. The Z8 is also 200 grams heavier than my Z6ii, bigger and priced over the moon. I'm probably the only happy pro with older gear, and until Nikon introduce the Z6iii (with 24MP sensor), I'll be happy for a lot longer.
you have to buy camera based on local pricing. where i live i spent $3000 usd equivalent for canon r6ii. canon r5 is $5000 usd equivalent. i just checked pricing of r5 in australia its very reasonable on cameras direct au. so pick what falls within your budget. when tech leaves america the pricing is all over the place.
Your problem with the lack of focus tracking is that you were shooting with the water in the background and the water is moving. That is the TOUGHEST situation to have AF work Becaue it is trying ot track the bird but also have a FULL frame of water moving. It is a VERY VERY difficult shot tog et focus on.
Have you heard of the Megadapt ETZ21 adapter to use Sony e-mount lenses on Nikon Z-mount bodies (including autofocus)? I'm sure there are many people who have a lot of emount glas, but would love to try a Nikon z8, since sony doesn't have a high MP stacked sensor camera apart from the a1, which is vastly more expensive than the z8. Is there any chance we'll get to see a review about it from you?
The Z8 is too small for me to hold comfortably, (I have big hands I guess) and it does not balance as well as my Z9 with my larger lenses. The small price difference to get the Z9 made the decision to get it over the Z8 very easy. I enjoy the much longer battery life, the better programmable controls, built in vertical grip, top command dial, the dual high speed card slots that take the same card so I don't have to carry around 2 types of cards, the built in GPS and logging, the secure card slot door, being able to shoot without overheating, and the smaller size when the Z8 is equally gripped. I am amazed at how small the Z9 is compared to my F mount Nikon D850+grip. Great job Nikon making the Z9 so small but still able to grip comfortably and has all of the features one would expect in the flagship model.
Thanks for sharing! I wish I had taken the R6 II to that spot, cause that had the best AF I have used in a while. Might have to get it again to see how it does there
Am contemplating the purchase of the Z8 and am so impressed with what I’m seeing. I own a D850 and D5 with lots of F lenses, and understand that they may perform even better with the FTZ adapter. I love both DSLR bodies but would need to trade at least one of them. Any suggestions as to which one to keep if I take the mirrorless plunge?

That sums it up nicely. It starts to depends on what matters the most for you as all brands have some pros and cons
Steve Perry points out that subject detection needs to have the subject close to in focus to work well. Pre-focus / manual focus to get give the subject detection a head start.
Great video Jan! This will more than likely be my first mirrorless camera.
Nice choice!
I need to remember to watch your videos with my camera in hand. Always useful tips and agree with the comments section...appreciate solutions more than bashing. Got sooo many great images with my Z7's and Z6's that I got because I tweaked and tested. Appreciate your channel.
Yes finding solutions is always better than complaining 😀 glad You enjoy the videos
Awesome review mate, best I have seen, those images are just stunning. Cheers, Duade
Thanks mate!
To put in perspective, that 600 f/4 TC lens, with the Z8 body is the price of a compact car. Total cost of the equipment reviewed here is staggering.
agree. its utterly unacceptable. and Nikon wonders why most folks now take images with their phones and are not attracted to legitimate photography anymore. pricing is insane.
@@Karkawry1970 I’ll get it back soon enough
@@Karkawry1970 the trouble is the smaller the area the more likely you will miss the bird, so it’s not ideal
Could try slightly larger box than the small one you settled on.
Great review Jan. My z8 and the 180-600 is arriving in two days. I can't wait!! 😂
Have fun!
Thank you for the informative review.
I have been using the D850 for years. Been a work horse. Just received the Z8 last week and I can tell you in every capacity the Z8 is better. No comparison
Hopefully, Nikon gets your feedback and improves the AF algorithm I will get this camera someday and use your AF setting tips.
They have improved the AF on the Z9 continuously, so I am sure they keep working on it
I sort of got lost in the video, I forgot I was watching a review 😅 the video footage and photos were too good!
Thanks! I tried to mix things up a bit
@@jan_wegener The review was good and thorough but I recently got a Sony A1 so I personally just watched the video to see your latest photography 😁
One of the best Z8 review. Awesome content. However, I will try the Z6II as my first mirrorless camera
Thank you!
I use the AFF for the focusing. I get better results with my Nikon APSC/DX & Full Frame/FX cameras. I do not own the Z9 and Z8 but I do have the rest of the mirrorless Z cameras. Cheers!
Wow, amazing photo and videography, You have really good birds in your area. Really Beautiful.
Thank you 😊
Good to see Nikon back in the game. This is the camera I wish Nikon released back in 2020. Got an R5 instead because the Z7II was disappointing - EVF, AF tracking and burst performance, and buffer were not competitive with Canon and Sony. The Z8 is what the Z7II should have been.
Agreed
Great video! Very helpful, as always. Considering switching from the Sony A1. Love the autofocus, but I struggle with handheld video.Would love your opinion on the autofocus compared to the A1.
For photos probably a bit behind for video miles ahead. Sony ibis is very shaky for video and it doesn’t even have birds tracking
Hopefully it will help! Only focusing once the bird was in the air got me a lot more keepers than starting from take off
my sony a1 with a 200-600 lens is 7lbs. Weight is a big concern for me. The Z8 with an 800mm lens would be about 7.5lbs so not much more - it's got me thinking about switching back to Nikon. I already carry 4 batteries for the Sony so extra batteries is not a concern.
I have the Nikon combination above, highly recommended. Easy to handhold. You won't regret switching
certainly is a nice combo when 800 isn't too long for you
Beautiful Osprey pictures Jan. I have the Z9 and just got the Z8 as my second body. Going to try your recommendation regarding focusing. Thanks for the tips!
Thank you! Good luck!
I've been a Canon guy for many years. I have a BlackMagic 6K, now, but still using Canon lenses with it. But, the Z8 is making me seriously consider switching to Nikon, as the Canon R1 is still nowhere in sight.
First time on the channel. Excellent real world review! Count me in as a sub.
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks so much just got a z8
Awesome
Great video, Jan! Do you plan on doing a Z8 vs R5 comparison? Would love to see that!
Thanks, maybe I will
A good honest review about the pros and cons of the Z8, I'm really considering getting this camera in a few months, my best local photographic gear shop, ORMS in Cape Town has been doing great specials on all the best mirrorless brands. I hope the Z8 will be on that promotion list soon😅, great images and video as always Jan.
Nice!
Excellent review! Thanks for the honest approach! When I buy my Z8 I will need to adapt my older F Mount lenses for a while! I’d love to see a review on how well that works! Thanks!
I wouldn’t have much concern there. I’ve only shot with the 500 of adapted but that worked very well
Thanks Jan for your great input and agility to overcome problems and explain how, very professional!
Whilst it's an option, it's totally a workaround. No modern AF system should struggle with that issue.
Thank you! I really wanted those images, so I needed to find a way 😀
@@jan_wegener I absolutely love these images, i can see them printed on my wall tbh, i have just painted our hallway and have 3 slots for frames. Do you sell images?
@@MrModerate_kane yes. You can email me or send me a message on Facebook or Ig
to use Z8 with 4-6 batteries is against every good natural behavior - as little batteries as possible are best for nature and biodiversity!
Which camera is best for bird and wild life photography?
Z8 or Sony A7R5??
Outstanding video
Love Nikon's performance, I bought a whole set filters from Kase for it. It's good for landscape photography.
I just got my Z8 a few days ago and your video is going to save me a lot of missed shots. Thanks so much. JMH -Ciincinnati, OHIO
Awesome!
Yes that would be awesome
Big Brand battle! Which camera is better, Canon R6 mark ii or Nikon Z6 ii for wild life photography
Excellent video and I was reassured that the z8 is still better than having problems, but there is still one concern, if possible, I would like a tutorial video or a link on how to get rid of this noise? The iso 12000 that you did, the end result was fucking great.
I'm a bit confused about what to buy, whether it should be a Nikon z8 or z9, I want to photograph wildlife as a professional
Thank you 👍
Very interesting review thank you !
My pleasure!
Is that rainforrest in QLD ... the waterfall image looks like one I have seen in Tamborine Mountains :)
Sounds like Nikon still hasn't quite solved their bird/animal AF issues.
The overheating seems to be related to type of card! According to some Delkin Black and pergear present little to no problem.
Yes some cards can get very hot
Thanks for the review. Very helpful and informative!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Lord the autofocus is atrocious. I'm a Nikon fan but this is very disappointing. Might have to go the Canon route
This is an excellent review, as always. Thanks for sharing your field experience and thoughts.
I got my Z8 on Friday and am very happy with it.
Awesome, thank you
This is one of the best reviews of the Z8 (or any camera) you are the only person I have heard make some honest complaints but then offer some solutions. My words are not doing my thoughts justice…superbly insightful review, you found a new fan today!
Thanks so much Brian
Great vlog for bird photography it would be even better if you didn't do this thing with your voice that is lowering the volume at the end of each sentence.
Nicely thought out review. Your double back button focus technique is a great idea.
Thank you!
Will you be doing an OM1 review as well? I know it’s an old camera but would love to hear your thoughts about the system
I have tried to get my hands in that and the 150-400 but no luck yet
@@jan_wegener Hope you manage to get your hands on one soon!

Thank you so much for sharing another wonderful video like always Jan, awesome review but my favorite part of the video was those amazing Osprey photos, I love Osprey and I photograph four of them almost every day in a bird sanctuary next to my home. 🐦❤👍🤗
That’s awesome! Thanks
Thanks for the comprehensive review, I currently shoot with a Z6 but was considering the Z8 as a new primary camera. This review is really helpful in helping me move closer to making that decision.
Great to hear!
Great review of the Z8. Jan is testing extensively, but without prejudice. Awesome comments and useful tips. With both the Z9 and Z8, Nikon seems to be back. Thank you, Jan!
That's true!
Great review , Makes my purchasing decision easier.
Thank for sharing Tony!
you make me ant t shoot wildlife. I have a Z8 for portraits. I know its overkill
Excellent review. i am still struggling to decide though :D
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video
Thanks.
Great!
I have the Z6II and contemplating moving up to the Z8, but honestly can it get better than the Z6II? It has been a great camera for me.
@@bobbullethalf The 3D AF on the Z8 has made me so giddy. Just like back on my D750s. I've only ran through one assignment on it so far, but I feel the Z8 is a clear step or two up from a Z6ii. It is truly joyful shooting with the Z8.
Such a great review!
I only watch reviews from skilled photographers who are actually able to capture amazing photos out in the field.
This review ABSOLUTELY fits that description.... thank you for this!!
Glad to hear that 😀
Hi! Great review!
An awesome and solid camera. But, then again, so it was the Z9. I think that the AF issues can be solved with firmware updates, so it will be consistent in the future.
Cameras now are built to last and, if you buy this camera or the Z9, I don’t see anyone REALLY needing a new camera for the next 10 years…
This is some next level gear and for a good price to boot. The Canon R5 is another good example of this, but it could use a better sensor and better dynamic range. Other than that, professionals are pleased
All best!
Yes, the cameras have made a big jump forward the last few years
Jan, this is absolutely one of the best review that I have seen.
Thank you! I think both work well with the adapters.
It's definitely difficult, and a very tricky scenario, but I have camera bodies that do much better in that regard.
I have heard about it, but it’s not something I’d really wanna try. The nikon lenses will have much better VR
Wedding photographer here. 2314 frames during my wedding Saturday, with about 25 4K video clips. Battery was at 27 percent when I swapped.
Wow that’s very good. What times frame was that taken in? Well below an hour?
You must have some big hands!
My Sony A1 struggles with the ocean as well and have to use a smaller focus point.
Thanks for sharing! I wish I had taken the R6 II to that spot, cause that had the best AF I have used in a while. Might have to get it again to see how it does there
@@jan_wegener i'd do manual focus overide
Did you try just manual focus override, to have the focus "approximately" in focus to facilitate the focus acquisition ?
Yes

Am contemplating the purchase of the Z8 and am so impressed with what I’m seeing. I own a D850 and D5 with lots of F lenses, and understand that they may perform even better with the FTZ adapter. I love both DSLR bodies but would need to trade at least one of them. Any suggestions as to which one to keep if I take the mirrorless plunge?
Totally up to you. I have a feeling you probably wouldn’t use either camera too much anymore once you get used to mirrorless.
Been one year, and it's amazing what Nikon has done in firmware to improve the AF. It's now a different camera. Might want to update your review. Tyl
I have done many since then including the new FE
35000 shoots? Feel like sewing machine 😂

Can't wait to swap Z7ii to Z8, in Z7ii the AF was still quite useless when shooting birds. Been going manual mostly.
It will be a big change
