amazing series - I really enjoy the energy and respect between you two. Phi, you're such a great teacher and Max is an amazing student. Keep it up, it's a really good format!
I agree with Maximillian about the wake-up problems. I keep getting pummeled when I hold back, but also if I tech roll. Could you make a understandable video about how to stand back up safely? Which options do I even have, and how do I do them? How does some people roll backwards instantly, or how do some manage to block low instantly after getting knocked down or after a juggle?
A very strong option is pressing Up when on the ground to recover quickly, to practice this, put training against jin, and do the following combo -uf4 b3~1 b3~u1 tornado 133 hold df df1 If you do the input well you will block jin's crouch dash 1 and punish him at -13 if you didnt you will get hit
Hold BACK when move like Bryan ff2 hits you while you standing and when opponent slams you to the ground when comboing. You're gonna backroll immediately and avoid other attacks. If you lying on the ground press UP to stand quickly and block or DOWN BACK to do the same but block lows. Also, it's my own tactic. You can press 1 or 2 to side roll but if you hold DOWN while rolling you stay on the ground. Roll avoids attacks and lying on the ground fcks up opponents timings so you can press attack after that. There are more but it's character knowledge you have to play and learn.
There is no universal solution to this problem. Characters have different options to deal with different wake up options. Generally if you are getting hit when holding back while getting up try staying on the ground next time. You will only know what to do when you are familiar with these situations
Not sure where you are financially but Speedkicks offers amazing coaching sessions for $50 a session, not sure if Phidx has open slots or how much he charges.
without context to this series, it seems like Phi is saying Max won't leave him alone lmao but damn what a back and forth with that Joker Lee, funny seeing a Chie on the same vid too man, i have not seen someone play like that leroy in forever o-o
I've really enjoyed following this series. Max is the perfect student. I love the notes before each video and following max learn through each session. Its got me motivated to be a better player myself!
The thing about a Leroy like that is that, at the end of the day, despite how oppressive he feels, he's running flowcharts with a LOT of holes, whether those are actual frame related gaps or just hoping you don't duck the repeated plus frame highs. Something like that can seem overwhelmingly good but it *will* lose to lab time and MU understanding, which is just not shortcut-able in Tekken.
yeh, i realized recently i should be ducking leroy in his face as often as i do steve or hwao. there is a god of destruction leroy in my scene who consistently destroys everyone but i'm starting to realize i just need to stop blocking ss1+2 and b3.
@@ScorchedEclipseone common strat I like to use when using ss1+2 is doing an instant df2 1+2 right after another sidestep, people are expecting another ss1+2 after the first one because of how plus it is, and it catches them right away xD It's not really safe however so most of the time I do df3, 1 after, but it's always funny when that df2 works.
@@ScorchedEclipse a lot of leroy's would prob go for a safe mid check or stance transition like ff4 or df4. but could also be ballsy on a hard read like the guy responded and go df2. df2,1+2 is -15.
I'm having a great time watching the series. Specially as a Lars main myself. Max's Lars is great to watch. Phi, you're a great coach. Really enjoy watching your tournament commentary as well.
I have been having a blast following this series, and learning a lot! I'm also going through blue rank hell right now so I can apply a lot of this advice in my matches. You're a great coach, and I love Max's willingness to learn. Keep it up!
You guys are so entertaining and also very informative, I hope you guys keep doing stuff in the future. That one match up match up you shared a while back was amazing to watch, I really wanna see you guys collab more, maybe do some stuff with the guys at the YoVideogames! crew on max's other channel.
Yeah you could tell his fundamentals are solid, he was just having some issues with combo execution and recognizing the specific frame trap situations. If those get cleaned up even a little bit then he should easily be Tekken King, wouldn't be surprised if he got there by now.
I remember 3 guys I fought non stop 1 was a Bryan I usually won 8-1, 1 was a Jack who always beat me 1-8, and a Feng Leroy play I’m currently 8-7 these guys made it hard asf to get Tekken Emperor and I’m grateful for it
Would like to have someone like you coaching me in-game. But I'm applying the next best thing which are watching these videos and use your suggestions on my gameplay and.. just reached Fujin for the fist time ever last week! Much love from Argentina Phi, keep up with the great content!
anyone have any tips to not get discouraged? I watch as many guides as I can. I try to memorize my frame data. I practice. But it's like I"m not getting better at all. I KNOW how to do things mentally, like break throws, but the window is tight so I can't react to it in time. Same thing with low attacks. I can see it happening and I just can't hit down back fast enough. All the guides say to use *these* moves in neutral. Okay I do my "safe" neutral pokes just to get blown up by someone's "unsafe" button. I just don't understand.
The best thing to do from my experience is to take a step back. Taking pressure off of yourself is one of the best ways to see improvement imo To me it sounds like the idea is there but you struggle to apply it and thats fine. Keep playing, take breaks when you feel flustered, and most importantly, have fun! I promise you're getting better even if its little by little
I agree with the guy above me! I think another method is changing your environment a little. So playing at locals to get in person, long sets. Or not running ranked all the time! Finding a training buddy! Anything that can get you out of the routine of doing the same stuff all the time.
Just to say thank you this small series with Max got me to break out of purple ranks the other day. I've been struggling at BR for like six months. You guys rock
Max needs to learn how to use WS moves. He literally blocks low half the time, then wastes frames standing up to try to punish. I've only ever seen him use WS + 2 with any consistency. Half the time, his WS +1s are input errors. He needs to learn the frame differences between WS +4, WS + 2 (~1\~3\DEN\SEN), WS +1, WS +3 (~D), and to throw Heat Smash from crouch, as well as throws and Lightning Screw (when he learns how to apply it properly. N00bs\scrubs need to learn how it is applied before using it for anything other than a 16 frame launch punisher.).
I don't play ranked because it's pure cancer and my secondary characters are shinryu and mighty ruler and I meet a few of them rulers... Sorry for that. Rulers are just easy streaks at this point. I think I might jump into ranked just to get to Tekken king so I don't find anymore rulers below 180k
Haha, the first sentence was funny, as I rarely even look at the names of the people I fight in ranked, let alone remember them. 🤣 If I get the same guy on a same day twice (or the character has the same unique costume) maybe, but otherwise I don't give a F who I fight with, on ranked everyone is just a rando. Btw getting the same guy 3 times at all, let alone in the same day is crazy to me. But I play in EU, so maybe that is why.
respect for sticking with steve. i went through almost the whole roster until eventually coming back to my man claudio and pushing tekken king with him now
one thing I absolutely hate about these ranks are the people who just whiff strings and finish them all the way and you just run into them because you think you have a whiff punish opportunity
Thats a legit use of those strings though, they're baiting you into the counterhit. String familiarity, movement and armour moves are your friends against it - easier said than done though I get caught out all the time lmao.
It's the natural progression of the game. Everyone, even pros, develop a flowchart in some way or another. It's why you see some people get completely downloaded in certain sets.
That lee is 3 times better than max. He literally was getting destroyed and carried by dumb gimmicks and flowcharts. I was gonna get pissed if lee lost the first matches, getting robbed 4 rounds.
