I'm a Lombardo guy as far as influence and slayer albums, but Bostaph is a monster who added his own style without trying to mimick Dave. Awesome video, and Paul seems like a cool ass dude.
In my opinion Gemini is one of the absolute peaks in metal drumming. The nature of the song gives the drummer an unusually wide range of approaches, and the specific way Paul gives each section it's own voice is pretty amazing.
"Gemini" is in its own universe. Unbelievable, creative, it is one of the best metal songs ever. You can listen to drumtrack only and it is enough 😊 First part (intro) and last part (outro after doublebass drums) are both a symbol of a metal drum solo for me. Every fill there is a masterpiece, the main motive (trrdubudu, that "ladder" snare-toms-bassdrum) is just amazing.
É incrível a humildade do Paul Bostaph... Eu acho que ele é um baterista subestimado. Sem dúvidas ele é o mestre do Thrash Metal. Provavelmente a minha principal influência.
Paul and his Divine Intervention drumming was and still is a hige and massive inspiration at metal drumming for me. It's like a thrash metal tank smashing everything at his way... And this intro used to be my day opening fill for years back then...better than gallons of coffee at the morning... Thank for this interview with a legend and keep drumming guys!!!
Love this. Good on you man. Paul is not only a legendary drummer - he is a great human being. I first heard Killing Fields in 1995 while in High School - been a Slayer fan ever since.
What a great interview. Super cool story about how he came up with that intro. Paul is a monster. Got one of his drum sticks during a Slayer concert. Glad I stumbled across this video!
A big "Thank You" to Paul for his work with Exodus...and hé did a top job! At that time I was very skeptical whether Paul whom I know from Slayer, would bé able to meet m'y demands on thé next Exodus album after "Tempo Of The Damned"... And...Yes, he did it better than I could have ever imagined. Paul's drumming on "Shovel Headed Kill Machine" is so precise, brutal and intense that i didnt have the words to express m'y enthusiasm. 🤘❤️ IMO more than just a replacement for Tom Hunting, who at the time asked for a break for health and private reasons.
Paul himself said at one interview it was quite a challenge to play on that record with Exodus. But he did his job perfectly brilliant, just awesome, brutal grinding music and same drum parts. He's not less then a god there
Love Paul. Probably my favorite drummer. Got to take drum lessons with him and it was surreal. Nicest dude possible. Slayer are one of my favroite bands and Divine Intervention is one of my favorites. Thank you for uploading this. Killing Fields is such a great song. My favorite off the album might be Mind Control!
Prior to the show, I met the whole band, but Paul because it was before the show they were getting off the bus as I was getting tickets. This was the night I will never forget and Paul you had the first batch of founders beer that I gave Jeff that was ever made! If you want to hear more of the story, I’ll be glad to tell it, but anyway❤ during his divine intervention tour. I was in the middle of the crowd he could see me signal to him that I wanted to stick. There was no chance in hell I could get it, because it would have to go through 50 slayer fans are doing first I jumped up in the air like Excalibur and grabbed it and brought down by zombies as I tucked my stomach and then after getting beat up I come up with it, showing him that I have it he gave me the biggest thumbs up 👍 you saw
Thank You Mauricio for this interview. When i heard this intro for the First time was right in '94, i was in the USA and i bought the CD. Paul's drum work on the previous albums with Forbidden are great too.
This is a great study. Thanks to Paul for clearing it up. Based on his explanation, I wrote it down and noticed that the snare-china hits are NOT on the 1, as I've always assumed and seen in other tabs. Those snare-china hits are on the 2 in 3/4! It's 3/4 for the first seven bars, then goes to 4/4 when the guitars come in. Badass. \m/
That was so interesting. My favourite SLAYER drummer and the mastermind behind the drum track compositions on the masterpiece ‘Divine Intervention’, the best drumming album in SLAYER’s discography. Edit : All of these famous superstar drummers supporting your channel is testament to your elite drumming chops Mauricio. 🤘🏻🥁

Uaaaaauuuu!!! Que massa Maurício! Obrigado por nos proporcionar a assistir este bate-papo massa demais com o Paul Bostaph. Sou fá deste cara deste 1996 e me inspirou demais como eu toco batera hoje. Valeu!!! 🤘
Bostaph 🙏. You're a legendary metal drummer. I love your works on divine intervention, undisputed attitude, decade of agression live.... For me, you are as the same level than lombardo even if your skills are differents
I'm 48, I grew up listening to Slayer in elementary school. Metal was my soundtrack to life and i worshipped it. Slayer was MY BAND as a kid, you guys remember when we'd argue over who was the heaviest, the most talented players blah blah blah and to me Dave Lombardo was GOD on the drums. If read neutral magazines cover to cover and they'd have rankings of best guitar players, bass, drum, vocals etc. and every time, EVERY TIME! Lars would be#1 😡 But we knew better. Lombardo was THE BEST at that time. When Lombardi left Slayer it was like someone died to me. I was devastated, to say the least. Fast forward, I'm standing in a juvenile detention center jail cell (my home for 6 months) the DO's would play MTV on the weekend at night. There was a commercial in between songs, and it was for Divine Intervention album preview. I was like, there is NO ONE! NO ONE that can replace Dave frikkin Lombardo! I only heard like 5 seconds of Divine so obviously I wasn't convinced of anything. When I got out I went right to the record store and bought Divine. When Killing Fields started.......i had no words ...😮 I just listened....... From that moment on Paul Bostaph became my favorite metal drummer🤷♂️ Paul's snare sound is just PISSED OFF sounding, his style is like a hard core / metal sound that fits Slayer like a prophylactic! I love David Lombardo always, I just saw him with Mr. BUNGLE and he's still a metal ICON amd groundbreaking in metal music arguably he's the GOAT in metal🤘 But to me, Paul is just for Slayer better and I like his sound better. That's my long ass story 🤷♂️ 🤘SLAAAAAAAYEERRR!!!!
Wow! How cool it must have been to have the man who wrote that intro teach it to you. Paul is one of my all time favorite drummers and that's one of the best intros in music history.
@@extreme_drumsthis is such a great idea btw. Interview + lesson. If you can do more of these with other famous metal drummers then your channel will explode.
Fala velhinho.
23:00 The best analysis method is, of course, to listen by slowing it down, but it is necessary to slow it down not with systems that slow down the sound without changing the pitch, but by allowing the sound pitch to change as in old-style analog tapes. In this way, you can avoid the process of resampling the sound digitally which causes the sound jittered/dashed. When you listen at a steady slow speed, you can easily pick out the low-pitched sound of each drum that you'll get used to over time. In this way, rhythms are deciphered more easily.
I remember being on a hockey tournament in 1994 and one of the guys had picked up divine intervention. Killing fields was an eye opener for all of us. Is this guy gonna be as good as lombardo... of course he was.
When I heard Bosthap/Killing Fields intro for the very first time, it reminded me when we were anxious about what was going to happen with I maiden after Clive Burr left the band, and then we heard the intro of Where Eagles There. And with no disrespect to Lombardo/Burr (biggest shoes to fill), Bostaph/Nicko ARE doing a great job?
Paul is one of my influences. His licks blew me away back then. Now I realize how to play Killing Fields intro correctly. I did it wrong for almost 30 years 😅
Bostaph was an amazing progression in Slayer's sound and overall survival through the 90s.
Drumming in Divine Intervention is on another level... Paul Bostaph, a God and a reference in metal drumming! Mauricio, excellent interview!
And honestly, divine intervention is one of the best albums ever devil music is one of the best ever, Paul kept slayer slayer and nobody else could’ve
Good album but terrible production.
Who was the drummer for Undisputed Attitude?
Because Gemini was the last song on that album
