Dionysus the Thrax wrote: the Phoenicians were neighbors of the barbarians and they did trade. Perhaps when the Greeks spoke in early times about then Phoenicians, becouse they gave them this name, they ment the Philistines. What we yet now about the Phoenicians is that they didnt founded colonies like the Greeks but commercial branches. So we cannot find a Phoenician dna in there colonies, whereas greek dna in the greek colonies. This shows that Phoenicians colonies were populated form the people around them.
I thought it was very intriguing! Seeing a culture that became dominant not by conquest(though I'm sure there were some instances), but largely through economic ties, create a syncretic society with other inhabitants is fascinating. I wish we knew more about Carthage and the Phoenicians in general.

My wife who is from Cagliari in Sardinia, has X2b as her mitochondrial haplogroup. This was a very interesting study and it has helped me to better understand her possible ancient origins. Thank you.
I am from India and I trace my ancestry From ancient Macedonia that is one part of Greece and the French island of Corsica s capital city belong s to my ancestry how this happened i don't know?
@roberto lang I would note that “race” (I prefer to speak just of statistical modes in the distribution of some apparent phenotypical features) is the least informative aspect of human ancestry. The haplotype method works for any time depth, but the anthropological features can be changed in a couple of generations.
@@ryrilo5078 Even with DNA evidence, there are still people that only want to ' pull ' incredible ancient history only towards their own, selfishly. It's quite obvious now that so many ancient civilizations were basically a mixture of different, " races " .. Nothing about, " racial superiority " amongst those ancient peoples, thankfully.
They weren’t descended completely from Natufians dude. They are descended from 3 Neolithic groups. Neolithic Anatolian mixed with Natufian & Iranian Hunter gatherer.
honestly...this is all such a fraud to me its incredible. most of european women have U hg. like 99 percent. then they invent subclades and the story goes on. women usually didnt travel esp in prehistory. or very rarely. men did...for conquest.and we know what happened in wars. as for E1 b i mean this is SUCH a bs...its unbelivable. some 5 years ago, they changed european haplogroups right in front of my eyes starting with switching italian I2a to R1b, and greece as well, then they added some I1 to Germany and so on and on. e1b is exactly the part that makes all the diff...its completely ridiculous. and makes no sense. i stopped watching this cause i saw how they manipulated all and made it fit into current geopolitics.. i have no doubt there will be other "world wide crucial" things to discover 🙄
Haplogroups don't follow ancestry exactly, for instance, the people with the highest Natufian ancestry are the Yemeni Arabs whose male haplogroup is mostly J1. All human groups are mixed.
Small request-- in the future, could you specify whether you are speaking of yDNA and mtDNA clades? It was confusing at times. Even a comment on the screen would help. ( I am yDNA I-L11949, mtDNA H7D2A)
I think the 'integration of european women' is more realistically described as 'the human trafficking of foreign wives' but I get that you can't conclude that from the DNA alone
No, you really can't. There have always been war brides and sailor's wives and they weren't always slaves or captives. Lots of American soldiers brought brides home from WW2, Korea, and Vietnam and almost none of them were victims of human trafficking - many of them were just women in hard circumstances who saw a ticket to a better life in a less war-ravaged country. Or women who found romance with a foreign soldier when their own young men were off somewhere else due to the war - there was a lot of that in England in WW2.
I think that is probably true. My H1e1a6 has been in the Stuttgart area back to the 1500's. Upstream H1e1a in an archaic DNA is Germany Middle Neolithic H1e1a, Esperstedt, near Hanover. It appears to be found in Scandinavia also. In my family the women of this line are midwives/herbalists.
I agree! However, I would note that female genetic mobility always was one of the distinct traits of the entire humankind. Also, I would note that there was no strict boundary between “trafficking” and the other mechanisms of mobility. Don't you think so? Whatever it is, I think you're quite right, I would consider the attempts to draw a positive conclusion as flawed.
This isn't really about the origins of the Phoenicians. It's like talking about the Spanish in the New World and calling the video Origins of the Spanish.

I think ,instead of or on top of mitohondrial MTDNA , a paternal Y chromosome DNA could also be very interesting plus its easier to track than MtDNA. A much clearer picture of the movements of the population as well as a composition / female ,male would also help. What do you ,the reader ,think ?
My last name is Cartagena, "New Carthage". I'm Black and Puerto Rican and my 23andme shows Sardinia, North Africa, the Mediterranean, Ashkenazi Jewish, and so on. Cool thing is it showed some Pakistani too, lol.
Yes, Carthagininan influence increased racial mixing, contributing to ancient Spanish lineages. Southern Spain has more Carthaginian (Phoenician) lineage than northern Spain.

They find bones and mummies all the time. They recently did DNA analysis of a bunch of Egyptian mummies. The DNA in the bones is gone but they can extract intact dna from the inside of teeth. They settled some long standing disputes about the ethnicity of ancient Egyptians this way.
@@lookoutforchris Of course there are Egyptian mummies...the Egyptians buried their dead. But the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans practice cremation. That's why Pompeii was such a big deal - there almost no examples of non-Egyptian civilized Mediterranean remains from that era that we can study.
My DNA traces back to Sardinia, which has a high concentration of Rh Negative blood. My mother had Rh Negative blood, and was Welsh. I wonder if there is a connection?
EEF = Early European Farmers. A Neolithic ("New Stone Age") population formed after the earliest farmers from Western Anatolia (Turkey) migrated into Europe. The EEF DNA admixture derives primarily from Anatolian Neolithic Farmers (ANF) with various amounts of indigneous Western Hunter-Gatherer (WHG) ancestry, typically less than 10%, although it can be higher in populations around the "edges" of Europe where WHG groups may have adopted farming rather than being almost completely replaced by EEF groups. In turn EEF populations were almost entirely replaced by incoming Indo-European (or "Yamnaya") DNA lineages (especially males) during the Bronze Age -except on Sardinia apparently, according to the genetic evidence. Any modern DNA ancestry test showing small amounts of "Sardinian" DNA is actually showing that IE genetic lineages did not reach or come to dominate the Islands ancestry. This likely means that "Sardinian" equals Early European Farmer (EEF) ancestry. It could also be that EEF ancestry managed to "hang-on" around the quieter and harder to reach regions of Europe just like WHG ancestry did.
@@simonmoorcroft1417 This does nothing to explain the higher concentration of Rh Negative DNA among select groups, or anomalies within those groups such as the Basque language being unlike any other.
@@alanschaub147 I was addressing Jacob's question about EEF ancestry. Replying to your questions I would say that DNA ancestry, language and culture are separate issues which can be connected or related, but not always. For example most modern Turks speak a language that originated in Siberia, likely close to Lake Baikal. Yet only 23% of modern Turks have "Turkic" DNA. Most modern Turks have an indigenous "Anatolian" genetic ancestry which dates back to at least the Neolithic yet their ancestors have spoken many languages (Hittite, Luwian, Hurrian, Persian, Greek, etc) and believed themselves to be part of many cultures and "races" over the years. Language and culture change frequently as new cultural elites arrive. Mass migrations do leave genetic traces throughout populations, where as small but important cultural elites often have a high linguistic and cultural impact but a very low genetic one. Using your own ancestry as a case I would say that the Sardinian heritage shown in your DNA reflects a trace amount of EEF ancestry that has passed down to you. Their is also clear genetic evidence that populations in Western Britain (Wales and Cornwall) retained higher amounts of genetic heritage from "earlier" waves of migrants than for example those living to the east in lowland England. This is believed to reflect the retainment of higher amounts of Neolithic farmer ancestry (EEF) as less people of Steppe Indo-European ancestry reached the periphery of the British mainland as they arrived from mainland Europe. The same could be true of the Basque population. They may represent a small isolated population in a remote location that strove to retain its cultural and linguistic identity and refused to intermarry with "foreigners" and thus accidentally retained a unique genetic heritage. A word of warning though. Rh negative ancestry may reflect retained EEF ancestry but it may also reflect the "founder effect" and "interbreeding". The founder effect is when one individual (usually a high status male) is the the direct genetic ancestor of much of a population groups elite and in turn its entire population. I am sure you understand what interbreeding is. Combine the effect of small population with limited genetic diversity in a remote location with a prohibition against intermarrying with outside genetic populations and you get a high occurrence of specific genetic traits and often hereditary genetic dieseases. We see this in modern population groups. I hope this answered some of your questions?
This is interesting to me as my sister had her dna tested and it contained Phoenician dna. I wondered how that could be possible because I thought as the Phoenician race no longer existed, how could a comparison be made. I now understand that it can be traced through other lineages. I recently started an ancestry search. (I'm British btw) and on the maternal side my sisters and I go back to Ireland with a French (Norman), great, great grandfather. We are all dark haired with green/blue eyes and 3 out of 6 girls have rhesus neg blood. Not sure what haplotype that would be. Fascinating stuff. Thank you.
Phoenician dna ? ????? how they could match your Phoenician dna ? they match you the Lebanese but even the Lebanese of today got admixtures that the Phoenician did not had at they time
(Just to be clear, race is genetic and ethnicity is cultural.) There was once an ethnic group called the Liby-Phonecians. Libyans mixed with Phoenician colonists from Tyre, through intermarriage. It wasn't just Carthage, but Lepsis Magna, Sirte, and Cyrenica sites where they set up colonies and intermingled. There was really no such thing as racism back in the day... People thought skin color was interesting like horses were interesting if different colors. Ethnicism - was rampant however, which is prejudice against someone's culture. Liby Phoenicians liked each other and intermarried because of cultural kinship. We would assume that Libyans of today like the Lebanese, might have traces of Phoenician DNA. In reality however... Phoenician DNA would have scattered all over Europe - because the Romans sold the Carthage Holocaust survivors into slavery. Quite possible many Carthaginian slaves ended up in Britain. Edit: It's also quite possible phonecian DNA ended up in Britain - because of the crusades. Just like American GI's brought back Japanese wives, crusaders sometimes brought back women from the Middle East.
@@KathrynsWorldWildfireTracking Very interesting, thank you. We know that a recent ancestor E. Jacques ended up In Ireland from France but we don't know the year because the records don't go that far back. He married an Irish girl Brigid and they moved from Boyle to Manchester, England, just before the famine of 1845 (I think that;s right?) About the "mobility" of women. The most plausible hypotheses that comes to mind is that women were abducted en masse. In your lecture, I would have liked you to elaborate much more on that.
I would say the conclusion on “abduction” would be too certain to be correct. It looks like specifically female kind of mobility always was one of the distinctive traits of the entire humankind. Different mechanisms of it were the routine ways of maintaining the genetic pool diversity. For example, what do you know about pre-historical forms of marriage? Do you know about “collective marriage”, that is the “marriage” between different settlement acting as separate social organisms? And do on...
I go to the point: the face of the man who appears at 3:12 is that one of an ethnic Sardinian or that of someone belonging to some other people, called into question at all costs and useful to make the Sardinians and more generally Italians more "exotic" than what they are? Does it serve to pull the sprint to some agenda that must enhance the specificities of everyone except the Europeans? Asking for a friend
No need to bother with Google images, I know the faces of the Sardinians very well since 1) I am Italian 2) I have Sardinian friends 2) I frequently spent holidays on that island The Sardinians obviously don't claim to be either Vikings, Hyperboreans or a kind of continental Obelix, but simply themselves. They have on average distinctly Mediterranean and archaic physiognomies / phenotypic characters, at times similar but not automatically superimposable to distinctly Levantine peoples. On the web everyone can find thousands of photos and videos of Sardinian village festivals, and if someone sees there masses of individuals perfectly resembling Middle Easterners, there are two cases: either he has never really seen a real Middle Eastern or he is trying to be smart. If we start playing with cherry-picking, by finding individuals with extreme characters, I can easily find blond Sardinians, who are not even that rare (see a singer like Angelo Sotgiu). And on the other hand I bet that someone would have to complain if you wanted to propose George Clooney as the individual with the most representative phenotype of the populations of British / Irish / German ancestry ... We must be careful with these messages, these studies, the same images used in them. Unfortunately I see that even very interesting and worthy of attention themes are becoming the vehicle of blatantly third-world / immigration liberal political nonsense whose purpose is not even so hidden: if you are "mixed" or not sufficiently "indigenous" to the land where you reside, you have no right to oppose waves of more or less unwanted groups, arrived illegally and with subterfuge, and you have to take it upon yourself. And while we're at it, this also serves a little to "usurp" some shreds of other people's history and culture, when one's own is a little less compelling. After all, it 's nothing new: it was the more or less similar topic exploited inappropriately for decades with the Etruscans, passed off in an interested way as "Turks" .. (when the real Turks in Anatolia had not even arrived yet). Then just one year ago the paper by Antonio and Moots was published, with some autosomal data of ancient Etruscan individuals and they plot exactly where they reside, indeed even a little further north-west (as if they were northern Italians tending towards the Iberian peninsula and southern France ...) I can hardly imagine the stomach ache of those who wanted them at all costs exotic peoples . We are Mediterraneans, South Europeans, with all our gigantic flaws, but we haven't gotten through our brains yet. Especially in the case of the Sardinians, who are very jealous of their insularity: if anyone has any doubts, go and see what their regional flag means.

I found it very interesting that the video just casually mentions the circumnavigation of Africa like it is no big deal, and like it is accepted fact. I personally think it is likely to have happened, but I have read that most scholars consider it a "legend" at most. But if true it is a BIG DEAL.
Just the human story as all civilisations rise and fall and history is generally written by the victor. As a Somali from Horn Africa it never crossed my mind to steal other people's history or deny them. But I found it interesting as a member of the Afro-Asiatic language group, with y-haplogroup E1b1b (E-M78) and with N1a maternal haplogroup we have strong relations with the Phoenicians and ancient Egyptians that are generally ignored in a lot of cases. Although people living in Egypt and the Levant obviously have significant connections, we cannot ignore that some populations are more mixed than others and by comparing these populations and their admixtures we would be able to deduce the ancient peoples' make-up and hence determine their potential historical relation to the Cushitic people of Horn Africa. That's just my biased theory but has some interesting strong bases unless everything belongs to the Arians and the Indo-European peoples. Semitic and Hamitic languages are both from proto-Afro-Asiatic languages from Horn Africa.
@abdirahimaden1229 a few years ago it was brought to my attention that Ethiopian foods are very similar to foods from India, and that rock cut architecture in India is very similar to Ethiopian rock cut churches. This is to say, I think ancient admixtures and travel has been vastly underestimated, which is i believe your point, also

I seem to recall that Herodotus claimed that the kidnapping of Helen of Troy was preceded by a series of kidnappings of princesses and that he claimed the Phoenicians started it. The slave trade, as horrible as it was/is, accounted for mixing genetics over vast areas. Everyone of us today has at least some of our origins linked to the slave trade. Many of the wealthiest families today can link their wealth, at least in part, to the slave trade.
I would add: especially if you recall that slavery initially was a kind of big social progress. To realize that, one should do a correct comparison. When slavery was first “invented” as the mean of getting some additional economic and practical benefits from winning the war, the alternative to slavery was the total homicide of the conquered population. Slavery became possible only with a sufficient level of productive labor and the presence of additional produce. Initially, slavery was literally the way to save lives. Also, it is impossible to compare correctly different forms of slavery.

Calling the female slave trade "female mobility" is a bit off putting. I mean come on. Its 1800 BC in patriarchal societies. This was definitely traded women as either wives or just straight up sexual slavery.
Not in Phoenician society. The central God was Baalat Gubla, the name-Goddess of Gubla, their name for Byblos. Their 'Kings' were actually the consorts of the High Priestess of the City. If she was strong, she ruled, and her new choice could be 'King'. If not, she would be a pawn perhaps. It is right there in the Amarna letters from the 'Governor' of Byblos, Rib-Haddi. circa 1350 BCE. He wrote 70 letters to the Pharaoh over 25 years. The society had matriarchal roots, for sure.
You are either kidding or haven't read much history. Slavery was as common as labor back then. Just walking thru a city you would see slaves performing functions daily. Why in 1900 BC we have a pre-nup wedding agreement between two elites that if the intending wife didn't provide child in two years she would have to pay to acquire a slave girl to give him child. It specified a 10 shekel slave girl. Probably a high price so an exotic one. Slavery was so common women were sold as chattel for elite citizens delights. If you are going to read about ancient times you better get ready for horrors as common life.
@@kendethstryke3020 Again. Female mobility has a different definition than slave trade of women. The only assumption that could be made based on the genetic evidence is female genetic mobility. That mobility could be through slavery, and or other means. It isn't exclusively slavery.
This movement of women made me believe the story of the Trojan war is actually a reference to a real event in which specific women were taken captive for the purpose of breeding with them. The story shows again for the founding Egyptian monarchs, on the Narmer Macehead. The superancients apparently held a belief women could be used this way, to form new populations which are genetically bound together. Helena of Troy is perhaps a bronze age symbol for the beauty of all women and the attempt to take control of a nation through controlling its royal women. Loved this. Xoxoxo.
This, not uncommon, ancient pattern of foreign women, suggests that they probably didn’t volunteer for marriage. Likely they were captured or purchased from elsewhere.
Or maybe got knocked up by a foreign sailor and decided to get out of town. Or maybe were very poor and saw a chance at a better life. There are lots of reasons that don't involve slavery or captivity. You still see a lot of the same today.

You are right Norse men were the decendants of the Greeks and pre norse men were the pre indo European Sumerians' descendents who were basically the decendants of homosepians who left Africa some hundred thousand years back
Polynesians also mixed Asians with lost Vikingar. Thus are big Chinese basketball players and Japanese Samurai. All descendants of vikings. Not all sailors but all large, tall fighters, like vikings. Tall Africans pure, not mixed with vikings. Turks mixed with African tallmen.
The other issue is the huge downplay of Phoetians who where based in Carthage and they influence on Rome and general Europe. The whole Senate the council of wise is of Phonetian origins and strangely even Belgium name is very Phonetian Baal like sounding
The later people known as Phoenicians have the paternal Y haplogroups of T G R1b Q I1 I2 J1 J2 E and B. These haplogroups are also in the Jewish people.
The Hebrew Bible talks about their neighbours the Phoenicians, who assisted building the first Temple, an accurate historical source that also mentions other cultures that were seen as mythical before archeology proved the Bible correct. They also provided sailors for Solomon's Navy, likely at quite a cost.
@@AlanAndrei care to explain? I'm a Cushite Somali and I have family members with blue eyes, my grandmother has green eyes, so were Sumerians Cushites then ? One thing we know for a fact, based on linguistic scholarly evidence, is that the Sumerian language had nothing to do with indo European languages (which were literally forming 6000 years ago, around the same time sumerian had already existed and developed for millenia), in fact many scholars have already shown the linguistic similarities and relatedness of Sumerian to afroasiatic languages (Cushitic Berber Egyptian) in North East Africa
I was born with deep blue eyes. Later, a layer of green developed over the top, then flecks and a ring of goldish-yellow around the pupil. So I have three layers of colors on my eyes blue in the back, green in the center and yellow in front. Nobody's been able to tell me yet what exactly my eye color is. Wait, so all this genetic coding means that Lebanese people have the most Phoenician genes? If only our ancestors didn't die out or mix, we would know more about them.
The latest investigations point to historic migrations originating in Egypt and using the ancient British language which today is known as Welsh you can directly translate egyptian Hieroglyphics and it pre-disposes that it was British/Welsh that was the spoken language of the ancient Egyptians.
Funny how everyone's theories on the history of seminal civilisations seem to coincide with where the theorist was born... "They were Irish/albainian/scandinavian/israeli/iberian" etc etc. There was a vast pre-historic trade network where all peoples mixed and developed from Britain (from the phoenician for "land of tin") to Colchis and India. Perhaps when the Greeks spoke in early times about then Phoenicians, becouse they gave them this name, they ment the Philistines.

@roberto lang I would note that “race” (I prefer to speak just of statistical modes in the distribution of some apparent phenotypical features) is the least informative aspect of human ancestry. The haplotype method works for any time depth, but the anthropological features can be changed in a couple of generations.
I’m X2b4 and I have small % of Sardinian in my dna report.
Studies show that sardinians are kind of a fossil remnant of the original farmers who came into Europe from the Levant

So now, finally, we are starting to see genetics come to the fore in studying these ancient populations.

I think the 'integration of european women' is more realistically described as 'the human trafficking of foreign wives' but I get that you can't conclude that from the DNA alone
That's what I was thinking.
No no no its mObiLiTy
Nice and all, but a link to the article would have been appreciated and appropriate for sure.

DNA from who from where did they find an ancient Phoenician tomb with bones???
🤷♀️
They find bones and mummies all the time. They recently did DNA analysis of a bunch of Egyptian mummies. The DNA in the bones is gone but they can extract intact dna from the inside of teeth. They settled some long standing disputes about the ethnicity of ancient Egyptians this way.
They worshipped synagogue of Satan and sacrificed babies. Their bloodlines run the world today
We have a lot of them in Lebanon we are there descendants
And what about the Sumerian cuneiform on that bronze plate of the Phoenicians?
My DNA traces back to Sardinia, which has a high concentration of Rh Negative blood. My mother had Rh Negative blood, and was Welsh. I wonder if there is a connection?
There is, I thought Welsh- like Sardinians have higher EEF DNA.
@@jacobmurray4785 What is EEF DNA?
About the "mobility" of women. The most plausible hypotheses that comes to mind is that women were abducted en masse. In your lecture, I would have liked you to elaborate much more on that.
A future geneticist might think the same thing about the sizeable influx of foreign women into the US in the late 1940s, and they'd be dead wrong.
Perhaps they were empowered and moved of their own free will ? That fits my narrative.

Yes. Just do a image search for Sardinian women. You will clearly see their origins.
No need to bother with Google images, I know the faces of the Sardinians very well since
1) I am Italian
2) I have Sardinian friends
2) I frequently spent holidays on that island
The Sardinians obviously don't claim to be either Vikings, Hyperboreans or a kind of continental Obelix, but simply themselves.

Phoenicians were named from the color red or crimson, not purple.
I thought it was purple too. Tyrian purple. What makes you say red?

@@Johnsun12 Purple is not "aka black". Black is black and purple is purple. In fact there's etymological connection of Phoenicia also with red. So black has nothing to do with anything in the name.

DNA tests on the earliest settlers of the British Isles have found a close affinity with Berbers and Phoenicians. If confirmed it means that Phoenicians did not just visit Britain for tin in the centuries BC but in fact were the first to settle here thousands of years earlier. Although they sometimes called themselves Canaanites, their neighbours often called them Khumri. If you know Britain you know what that implies. I have read there are also some close parallels between the Phoenician language and early Gaelic. Those guys sure got around.

The slave trade, as horrible as it was/is, accounted for mixing genetics over vast areas. Everyone of us today has at least some of our origins linked to the slave trade. Many of the wealthiest families today can link their wealth, at least in part, to the slave trade.
They were more likely human flesh trafficking with slaves as a important secondary item.
And 90% of it was done by their own to their own.
@@stevethecross2727 If I could inject a thought about your comment. I can tell you are of European decent because of the way you generalize entire populations together as if all of Africa was homogeneous and under one government. There are more language groups there than the rest of the world along with political divisions.
Female mobility isn't exclusively due to slavery. No need for loaded language.
Uhhh just call it what it is....human flesh trafficking.

Loved this. Xoxoxo.
the greeks wrote that the Phoenicians traded with slaves and women. Without knowing history, one cannot understand genetics

The city of Tyre is where the rubber hits the road
And every year in the city of Tyre is a Goodyear.
