Between watching Melissa and her style tips, and all the declutter shows, I have cleared out my wardrobe, old shoes, handbags, make-up the lot!! Trying it all on, I had to find what goes with what, and picked out what looked good....there was a big pile of stuff that I didn't even want to put on, it didn't make me happy or feel good or anything positive, and I realised..That was All the stuff that overfilled my wardrobe and made it hard to find what I Did want to wear, and with trying it on, liking it and hanging it up, my wardrobe looked just nicely filled.. ..so guess what, I could finally let all the rest go, including bags and shoes I never wear!! Donated it all and haven't looked back!❤
Love Melissa! She is the best stylist for the real world. Until recently I was continually buying clothes for a life I didn’t live. Thanks to Melissa I am addressing this situation. What a star she is ❤
I love this line in your reply - it resonates perfectly with me - "I was continually buying clothes for a life I didn't live". I couldn't have said it better, thankyou!! 😊
I'm so glad I clicked on this video. I have been very frumpy for many years now. I barely ever go out these days so there's no reason to bother. But I have to make some changes. I've lost a lot of weight this year (and intend to keep going). As we're just going into warmer weather in Australia at the moment (November) I've put on several pairs of shorts just to find out they won't stay up on their own! I have to overhaul my clothes. Most of my tops I was drowning in over the last few months. It wasn't till I saw my image on a zoom webinar that I realised how frumpy I am looking. I'm busy making my way through lots of areas in my life and myself (slowly but surely) and it's good to have some tips to include. So glad I ran across your channel today.
I loved the chat and tips! ♥️ It was so helpful but not necessary expensive, as it can often be which makes it difficult for the average person to make the changes needed to take it up a notch - or two! (Especially if you’re Canadian, our dollar doesn’t go very far these days!🇨🇦)
I only discovered Melissa a couple of years ago during lockdown but am so thankful that I did! I definitely haven't got it all right but with Melissa's patient, kind and skilled help via UA-cam I'm feeling more confident in the way I dress and feel AND it suits my lifestyle. It would be a dream to be styled by Melissa in person. Please keep doing what you do. x
This was so good! Since moving from a very hot and humid climate to Seattle, I've realized that the only thing that matters in my outfit are my boots and jackets. I have added so many practical and stylish choices since finding Melissa. Before finding her, I was a mess in a sad Columbia fleece jacket.
I've been following Melissa on Instagram and UA-cam and I find her so helpful. I'm 47 and had been stuck in a rut...her advice has really helped me to start restyling my wardrobe.
Melissa is so lovely. The best really. I have been following her for years and her senior stylist Clare is my inspiration (mirror) ♥️ Simply the best! thanks for having her on. I look forward to your wardrobe restyle 😊
I really enjoyed Melissa's take on 'investment' purchases. It's usually standard practice to tout the value of an investment piece or two, but despite being nudged toward that blanket statement, Melissa repeated that for some who wish to take care of their items (can be bothered to remove before showering etc) AND who might be just has happy using something for a few years and replacing it with something they feel is trending a bit more, it can be equally as smart a strategy to not invest in something that expensive. It doesn't have to mean cheap or fast--it can just mean that they don't think they'll derive the value in a big-time expense for one item. THANK YOU. One size doesn't fit all, in many ways.
My two favorite girls!! I have totally changed my attire and i love fashion. Plus with Clare i am glued every Sunday for my skincare etc news. Love you both.
I am a huge Melissa fan… You should definitely take her up on her offer to do a wardrobe freestyle… I watched one of her UA-cam’s where she was in a woman’s closet and it was fantastic.
That definitely can be the case though there are some brilliant shoe brands out there now doing comfort options. I have a pair of Vionic arch support boots and they’re great.
Lol, I once bought a pair of navy slingback pointed shoes in the early 2000s. I thought I was the bees knees until I found I couldn’t walk in them. I kept tripping over the points and felt like daffy duck. I had to go back home and change. The shoes promptly ended up in a charity shop, (this was before online selling sites became big). I have since discovered that I have flat feet and that was probably the source of my problems. Now I have to look hard for comfy AND stylish shoes for flat feet - very difficult, especially when you want to look chic. I was grateful for the trainer trend and New Balance 574 trainers with a more pointed toe work well for me. Shoes though are another issue and very difficult as they have to have a strap or I can’t keep them on my feet, but this makes your legs look shorter. Haven’t found a stylist yet that addresses this issue. I have one pair of loafers that stay on my slim heels and some almond toe shaped boots, but no other shoes presently. I need help and pointy shoes aren’t it!
I've been following MM for a few months now. I took the advice on the white tops and have not been sorry. I save them for a whites wash with a brightener fabric detergent to keep them white. Packing for holidays is great with white tees and blouses.
I live in Canada and we really miss M&S. Their stores were here decades ago but since they left, it’s been a gap. I do, however, source them out when I’m in the UK or Europe. I never thought to check online to see if they ship here…something tells me they may only ship to the US as is the case with a number of companies overseas. I’m really loving this video full of great information…
My 83-yr-old mom was visiting and we were in my closet when she asked why I had so many white tops. I told her they go with everything. Glad to hear this confirmed. Since retiring a few months ago I realized I had no hang-around-the-house clothes. ( I only own one pr of jeans.) And the older I get, the more important is to have comfy everyday shoes. Not a fan of sneakers so it took some searching but found a few brands that are comfy and stylish.
Great fun video 🥰 I have learnt so much from Melissa’s videos and would be so amazing if you decide to have her over to help you with your wardrobe and to share the experience with us 🙌🙌💖
That was so helpful! I *want* to be fashionably dressed (though not expensively dressed!😊) but I’m making several of these little mistakes as well - it’s great that many of the tips really are “small” or simple and pretty easily changed. I’ve got a couple of pairs of jeans in my wardrobe that just need a bit of a shorter hem, and a couple white tops I had forgotten I owned to go dig out…and take a look at my jewelry options! Thanks so much, I’m going to sub to her channel, and I look forward to seeing your closet re-do - I have a feeling it’ll help me out a lot as well!😉
I just became acquainted with your podcast, and so thrilled! Thank you for your authenticity & great selection of your guests. I will be looking forward to the next!
Pointy shoes cause 2 types of bunions - big toe bunions and tailor bunions on baby toe. Young girls should be taught this and pointy shoes shoes should be worn very very sparingly. If you want to walk properly without pain when you are over 50, teach your daughters the dangers of pointy shoes.
Yep I have bunions in both places. They hurt like hell after a day of shoe wearing. I love it when I find tennis shoes in men's size 8 because those actually feel comfortable. Now, if it's not wide width and women's shoe I really can't wear it.
I haven't heard of seen this part yet about white shirts but i don't like im white on me as much as winter white and also, i spill things on all of it like it's a magnet for liquid and red food lol.
This was a fantastic video, plenty of great advice. I am a big fan of Melissa's channel. She gives such practical tips which really help me every day. Thank you for the video!
Great interview! Love Melissa! If I ever win a lottery she’s the first person I would hire🤣🤣 I’ve watched all her videos and unfortunately still I feel frumpy. There is just no hope for me I think… No matter what I do, I seem to look fine in front of the mirror at home but when I sneak a look at myself in a shop display or a changing room, I usually just look awful 😩
@ I thought it was supposed to be the opposite!🤣 They want to make us look better in the changing rooms so we buy stuff… I’m your recent subscriber and I really like your videos. Lots of useful information. I started washing my face in the morning with water only because of you!😘😘
This is fun and helpful, and I'm glad you amended your advice to wear s neutral instead of white. I am a "Summer" and white makes me look washed out. Also IMHO, when your guest pulled back her hair, the result was so becoming.
I bought a second-hand long wool coat to wear on my canalboat and the amount of compliments I've had about it! Saying I look elegant! (And I'm certainly not!😂) 🤩🏴🇬🇧
Thanks for saying black does not go with everything.. I have been saying this since ever and 80 percent of my tops are white/cream, it is so true ... White brings everyghing together ❤
unfortunately i have ridiculously large bunions. if i wear my inserts i can be very active and don't have problems... if im going to have surgery to look better... it would definitely be my nose.. id love more info on picking outfits that work with sensible wide shoes...
yes on needing the white tops, but it IS because they get dinghy so easy and quickly! it's not an excuse! they truly do not hold up in an active lifestyle. IMO (: and it's oddly hard to find one that fits perfectly, let alone to find it over and over, over time. working on it (:
The coat colors she suggested are not for everyone. If you know your colors from the seasonal color analysis approach you would know what works personally. Also if you know your Kibbe body type then you know what works for your shape. These 2 approaches help with curating your closet and finding your personal style. The Curated Closet book is a great help too.
Can we stop calling things that are more expensive, "investments"? Unless it's likely to go up in price, it's not an investment. Certainly a $200 plated piece of jewelry is never an investment. I'd rather save up my money and buy solid gold that lasts, and can hold its value.
Investments aren't necessarily financial. It's also a commitment of resources to achieve later benefits. So by having a good quality wool coat in a neutral colour for example that will last for years, is in itself an 'investment' as it's beneficial.
I still sit with it in when I’m watching TV at night to help strengthen my jaw. I don’t think I could find much new to add to my last video but I’ll look to do something on my website and I’ll share it on my community page
I personally feel because you are more broad shouldered if you wear shoulder pads or have a more structured top piece on with sharper shoulders it is only accentuating your broad shoulders I was really surprised to hear a professional stylist to offer you that advice
I’ve not noticed having broad shoulders before. Usually clothes hang off my shoulders as I’m quite small so I did agree the shirt could benefit from a little structure.
I've linked my last conversation with Melissa in the description where she explains how to dress for your body shape. Well worth a watch. She has done lots around this on her own channel too : )
Accessories are like ties for men. Doctors in their offices no longer wear ties and nurses no longer wear hats due to disease transfer. The same applies to accessories.
Hard not to be frumpy when the rain is lashing down and it's blowing a gale outside and you just want to nip out for some milk. Personally I avoid white tops makes my boobs look bigger I never wear white tops ever
Social media makes us believe that we always have to look perfectly put together and stylish at all times and that is simply not true. Yes there are days we like to look stylish but there is a time and place for everything including a coat that is weather appropriate for a milk run on a miserable day. 🩷
That's what I thought until I started watching Melissa. Once I found her, I watched all her vlogs. I don't do white; I do off white/ivory. But everyone is free to wear what they want and what makes them happy.
I desperately need wardrobe help! I stopped working just at the start of Covid and never went back. Since retirement I have gained a few pounds and now have nothing that fits. The selection at the malls is dreadful and I do not like shopping online. I’ve bought a few items that way but it’s such a hassle to wait and then have to send it back when it doesn’t fit. I look like I’ve given up because I have. What is a 60yo woman to do when she needs an entirely new wardrobe?
I think Melissa’s point about trying to build a capsule wardrobe around a few items that can be mixed and matched would be especially helpful when you’re starting over like this. Not easy though, I know. ❤️
I also retired a few years ago and have nothing to wear. I hate everything in the stores right now too. I’m sorry but there isn’t a snow ball’s chance in Hades that I will ever wear those cropped ankle pants and unless bibs for adults come into style the white shirts are also a no 😂
I know how you feel. I'm doing the same thing. I watched all of Melissa's vlogs and took notes on what she recommended for my body type. In some ways it has made shopping easier because I'm not wasting time trying on the wrong clothes or colors. It takes time to build a wardrobe. I also read up on capsule wardrobes which helped too.
I love your channel and all your guests. This one is an exception unfortunately. I don’t know Melissa but she comes across patronising to me. Nothing wrong with wearing something you are comfortable with and the colour that suits your skin colour. I don’t like that she is calling them ‘mistakes’. If I’m comfortable wearing a certain way then I want to keep wearing it. It’s not a mistake.
I am not going to wear a pointy shoes because someone thinks that it’s look ‘feminine’ and better then I suffer with achy feet as the toes doesn’t feel comfortable in pointy shoes.
Thank you for supporting my channel - it really is appreciated. Not all subjects covered and advice shared is going to appeal to everyone, and I understand that. Melissa offers practical tips for people like me who are looking for pointers around how to lift outfits and get out of the frumpy zone where I quite often find myself in winter! Thanks again for being here.
How many bloody pursues do you want to have? Transferring stuff from one purse to another is a pain in the butt and a waste of money. Bring on the frump.
Is it UK? What's with 1990s hair and brows on 50? 60? yo women. Is it the style? I thought British actresses with their embracing wrinkles and greying hair are so refreshingly natural. The "presenter"(?) looked absolutely situation-appropriate walking her dog.

I think she looks frumpy in those big blazers and big pants - same for Drew Barrymore whom I love.
I love watching MM UA-cam channel. She is realistic and practical and creating tasteful outfits.

Feet with bunions not only cannot fit into pointy shoes but pointy is UNHEALTHY for the feet.
That definitely can be the case though there are some brilliant shoe brands out there now doing comfort options. I have a pair of Vionic arch support boots and they’re great.
Well-- Calla shoes are made for people w/ bunions by a woman who herself has bunions.
No matter how many reasons are given to wear pointy shoes, I promise NEVER to wear witches shoes. That’s what I see when I look at pointy shoes.😮
They’re only unhealthy if they’re designed poorly. The taper needs to start AFTER the toe box
Lol, I once bought a pair of navy slingback pointed shoes in the early 2000s. I thought I was the bees knees until I found I couldn’t walk in them. Not having to repurchase a garment because it's well made is definitely an investment
“You can’t look a state if you have the colours of your outfit right.” I have to remember this.
The coat thing really resonates...I need my coats to all be camel colored...that would make my life so much easier

Hard not to be frumpy when the rain is lashing down and it's blowing a gale outside and you just want to nip out for some milk. Personally I avoid white tops makes my boobs look bigger I never wear white tops ever
Yes, though I realise that always wearing black or very dark coats isn’t doing me many favors.

TJMaxx has quality brands at lower prices.
Charity shops. A wider choice at lower cost. Great for experimenting and finding your new style.
White tops make my inverted shoulders look wider
You looked cute walking your dog! Not kidding.
Thank you 😊
Yes, I was making all the mistakes. I’m going to throw all my she’s away. Nothing matches in my closet. Everything is a different color!
❤❤❤
You kept referring to you “straight” jeans. They weren’t straight, they were skinny!
I have skinny and they stick to my legs : ) these are described as straight but I guess they're on the skinnier side.
@ Nice reply, thanks. I think the whole shoes/trousers thing just makes me tetchy. I can see when it looks wrong but not always what might be better.
@@maelilmc4079 I hear you!
Nobody has storage for all this junk. Keep is simple. Have one purse and 2 pair of shoes for each season. Nuts.
Trying to achieve an hourglass illusion is Not a good look for some body types. As. Dramatic I like long straight lines and look best that way.
I found that thre host interrupted the guest too frequently
I’ll take that on board, thanks
Pointed shoes are hideous and I have yet to meet anyone with pointed feet. They ruin the feet
How many bloody pursues do you want to have? Transferring stuff from one purse to another is a pain in the butt and a waste of money. Bring on the frump.
Bring on the frump 😂
Please stop the talking down to us. I have never heard such a boring discussion on this topic.
Why is she watching this?
Is it UK? What's with 1990s hair and brows on 50? 60? yo women. Is it the style? I thought British actresses with their embracing wrinkles and greying hair are so refreshingly natural.
The "presenter"(?) looked absolutely situation-appropriate walking her dog.
Meanie.
