You set us up for that last run by saying, "In this next trail, I made the biggest mistake of the day." It started, and the suspense was killing me. Every turn, every berm, every jump, every transition, I thought you were going down. I felt so nervous.
There is no greater feeling than hitting a feature on the list and overcoming the fear. Congrats brother! I hope to ride there someday but I'm for sure not ready for a drop that big yet.
I've seen you test a bunch of bikes, and it is obviously difficult to jump on a new bike and just go send it, but you looked stiff on that bike, and you seemed uncomfortable on every landing. Just glad you didn't eat it on the big drop- good job sending it!
Nice job bro! I’ve been there twice and still haven’t dropped the hammer, maybe next time you can tow me in! And yeah, that last jump on fire line is super poppy, definitely kicks you over the bars compared to the rest of them
NEVER, EVER listen to other Riders when they tell you it's easy. It's always coming from their perspective at that very moment, with all of their experience. Not many riders can relate to somebody with less time in the saddle or perhaps a different set/level of skills. Really that is some of the worst advice anybody could give or take. "It's easy" 🙄🤦♂️ It's actually irresponsible as well. Most people who ride and a lot of these so-called UA-camrs are not instructors, they are not coaches and they do not have a good comprehension of teaching skills to other people. Feel bad that you crash man hopefully no sustained injuries Matty 👍
Great job overcoming your fears and completing dropping the hammer. This looks like a place I need to try to get to and do some rides! Glad you are OK from the crash. You have some great videos!
I know that feeling of finally doing a feature that has intimated me for years..overcoming one’s own fears is like Gold..! But don’t let it go to your head..Improvements are done in small increments 👍
Awesome job Matty! Conquering fears is the best feeling in the world. As far as the crash… they happen!! You were able to get up and keep riding. That’s the hardest part of a crash is getting back up and moving forward!! Excellent video sir!!
Hell ya bro when I did it the first time I was so scared. But when I went I told myself I had to do it no matter what. Couldn’t believe how easy it was. Good job bro👊🤘
It's always the easy stuff that gets you, the worst crash I've had in a long time was on a paved bike trail, I looked over my shoulder to see where my kids were and I went off the side and hit the only boulder on the whole 30 miles of the trail. Went over the bars and scratched my new bike. I was going about 3 MPH when it happened...It's those times you lose focus that gets you, these things can be dangerous at any time. You were really high on a few of those berms, careful up there, it's loose and if you go over a little you're going to have a bad spill!
It's not that it's necessarily easy or difficult it's the physiological challenge. The Mind Body perceives levels of difficulty or levels of ease across a spectrum from Individual to individual.
Heck yeah Matty!! You sent that drop like it was nothing!! The stoked vibes are high!! 🤘🏽🙌🏽 super sick to see how far you’ve come and how many people you’ve gotten to meet throughout this sport!
GREAT VIDEO! And good for you for dropping the Hammer! I still have yet to do it. The videos make it look easy but then when you get down there it looks so intimidating. I hit the drop right after it a few years back and had too much speed. I landed too deep and looped out and hit my hip, HARD. Luckily didn't break anything but my hip and leg was blue and swollen for like a month. So that freaked me out. That was a hard crash you had. Glad you're ok.
Great stuff! Those drops are hard easy. If it wasn't for me getting into my own head those would be simple. Doing what you did was perfect. See how it's done, surrounded by personal cheerleaders and then just sending it. I have experienced that on drops, rock rolls and rock gardens. The adrenaline rush afterwards last for some time. Oh, I'll be 58 in the spring and really only started riding serious singletrack in the spring of 2020. I am not a great rider but I can handle terrain I never thought I would attempt now. It's been a great journey so far and I have been able to do it with my daughter and a good friend of mine.
Another gem of a video Matty! You were absolutely SENDING on Fireline (even w/ that tiny crash) - so nice riding! Thanks for coming out to Outerbike Bentonville. Such a fun weekend!
Nice work man! That last jump on FireLine is no joke, i have "dead sailor'ed" it just like you did. It catches people off guard b/c you are so gassed at the end of that run b.c it requires you to pedal as you know. Again nice work and congrats on Drop the Hammer....!! Pedal On.
Nice riding Matty! Can't believe I missed getting on that Drop the Hammer train with you guys. Funny how Lawton convinced us both to do that drop aboard a Jamis!
Matty, that was a superb vlog ! It’s so try, buy what you like and forget about comments that people make. Like others have said , if you can’t buy the bike of your dreams, upgrade when you can, it’s the way to go, you feel more satisfaction .
I was there in late August and made one real roll up to it. It was so hot that there wasn't really anyone out riding so there was no one to tow me in. I decided it could wait until my next trip! 😅
My first time seeing your videos. Good quality. That build up before the crash was great. I’m sure everyone was on the edge of their seats. Quick correction. You warned up on Thunderdome and crashed on fireline. Congrats on the hammer dude.
I'm at 2:50 in, haven't witnessed anything bad - but that dual slalom trail (the side by side) looks awesome! I'd love to ride that with someone at roughly the same level who was competitive!
Great job man! I finally hit it myself a few weeks back (psst… video coming soon!) so I know how the fear creeps into the mind but once you do it, you just want to do it over and over! Congrats! 👊🏼
Really happy for you man. I went to Bentonville in May. I didn't have the guts to do it at Drop the Hammer. I probably need to ride with a group like you did instead of by myself. Coming back next year though. Great video!!
I definitely know how it feels to be fearful of a drop. I live in Southeast Michigan, Detroit to be specific, and we don't have a lot of elevation changes here, but the trail builders do a great job of making fun XC trails with some decent descents and climbs, and also drops. River Bends is one of the most popular MTB trails here, and it has a short technical downhill by the name of Robbins Ridge. It has a drop, and that was the first drop I did. It's tiny in comparison to Drop The Hammer, but me and my Schwinn S29 did it, and I enjoyed it. I was afraid, but more less fearful of how my bike was gonna handle the landing. But she handled it better than I expected. It's a solid bike despite what people say about it.
Can you do those hammer jumps with a hardtail or should be done on a full suspension? I just started in the sport and got a hardtail( giant fathom 29r) and wanted to know since I haven’t hit any jumps yet.
That was great! I felt that bail though, glad to see you're okay. The algorithm has started feeding me your channel again and wow you have come a long way! I look forward to seeing more. Thanks for the inspiration.
Matty I remember when you first started your channel you was just sticking to the streets only on your mountain bike... I also remember when I commented on you not giving yourself a shot on the mountain bike trails and mentioned that l had to depart from the channel because of that very reason... This was way back in 2017 or 2018 l think... But now here we are in 2023 and you're out here killing it on these trail... You are such an inspiration my guy...
Dude!!! I just watched a couple of your videos from 7 months ago and was wondering why you didn't hit Drop the Hammer! Then this video popped up in my feed! Congrats on conquering your fears! I recently hit it for the first time AND met Seth the same day! It really was the best day ever!
I am sure that I have the technique to do that drop, but my fear of heights might well make me stiff and awkward (more than usual), and worst of all hesitant, and cause me to screw up.
Yeah unfortunately he did thankfully he did not sustain any serious injury. The main problem was listening to other people before he was physiologically prepared and ready. I don't bother too much with these wannabe yt stars. 🙄 I take my cues and advice from guys who have a proven history of professional experience and championships. Ryan Hughes, MX Factory, Rocky Mountain atv, FluidRide MTB...👍 there's a few other good ones out there but most are a waste of time or they're just trying to make money
You set us up for that last run by saying, "In this next trail, I made the biggest mistake of the day." It started, and the suspense was killing me. Every turn, every berm, every jump, every transition, I thought you were going down. I felt so nervous.
About to say the same thing! I'm even a bit hot and sweaty after watching that run 🤣
Oh man I saw a guy break his collar bone on the exact same jump that you wrecked on there on fire line (at least that looked like fire line)
@@AdamDaugherty-j7hyeah the first warmup was actually thunderdome and the last trail was fire line.
There is no greater feeling than hitting a feature on the list and overcoming the fear. Congrats brother! I hope to ride there someday but I'm for sure not ready for a drop that big yet.

+1 on the hammer....not sure if I got it in me
Congrats on dropping the hammer bro!
As to that accident; oof. That was a big spill
I was 54 years old first time hitting Drop the Hammer and my ride younger ride buddies refused to try it before me
Great job! I am happy people (UA-camrs) collaborating on the videos. Awesome! Crashing is part of the game.
Great job overcoming your fears and completing dropping the hammer. This looks like a place I need to try to get to and do some rides! Glad you are OK from the crash. You have some great videos!
I guess it’s easy after you’ve done it. That first time though.
OMG, that bike saved you on the first attempt

I was getting dizzy watching that last run...
