I am 60 years old and about a year ago I tried to learn to wheelie, but kind of gave up because it was taking too long and cutting into my trail time. I don't have great balance and figured like Lee that I didn't have the gene. After watching this video I am stoked to give it another try. I guess I have to find the stoke in it for the lessons to stick. Thanks Lee and Alex for another geat video!!
"look up" - 100%, but the game changer for me was when I realised (by accident) that if I ALSO actively pushed my head backwards over my shoulders at the same time maintaining the balance point was much easier (~7kg's, ~2inches(~50mm here in New Zealand) back, makes sense, right? :-) ). I love the way you guys take a different approach to things that have been covered a million times on UA-cam, great stuff!!
I’ve been consistently riding for the past year now, attempted to wheelie and landed on my back once and gave up. I’ve been anxious to keep trying and after watching this I want to go for it again.
This video inspired me to seriously start practicing wheelies. Right this moment, I was just about to fall asleep when it struck me, I just nailed the challenge! Earlier today I did my longest wheelie, just under a minute long, and I'm 43 so that's all it takes I guess. I couldn't even do a split second the first week of practice. I'm so stoked. Thanks for the inspiration and the awesome tutorial!
I could wheelie very well when I was a teenager. I am now 48 on a full suspension 2021 Jamis Portal A2 and you guys have inspired me to get out there and wheelie again.
3 things I have now put in as focus on my practice is : arms straight, head up (chin up and looking forward)....and breathe. I found myself holding my breathe a lot. I am 50 now and it's baby steps but I am actually seeing results. Great video guys
i have been working hard on wheelie-ing for some time now. My biggest fear is that "float zone" where you are either going to float or go over. It really is scary. My wife asked me (at 50 years old...me not her) why I want to do that anyway?? My response "because I can't...therefore I must!!". I am 100% determined to do this.

You guys are awesome. I learned by eyes up, always eyes up. Primarily leg power with slight lean back and slow for me as I found I was jerking the bike and that had less control and hurt a bit. Plenty of power in the legs at low speeds. My brakes are not a smooth so using them usually meant loosing the wheelie.
I'm 36...just upgraded to a ragley marley 2.0 as i'm getting into MTB'ing but haven't attempted a wheelie in about 18 years...all that's gonna change now i've watched this. Going to attempt one tomorrow!
Hey, thank you so much... I watched the video, got in my backyard and 10min later could do 3 pedal turns of wheelie...😱😁 this is awesome! You got a subscriber from France.
I’ve watched many videos doing wheele and I am 48 yo. And first your concept of training is great. And the first thing I like, instead of the other UA-camrs telling that higher speed makes it more stable, this may be true but is not a good tip for frightened beginners. Thought yesterday I figured it out. First time a made 1-2m wheelies. But I saw the technique was wrong. I pulled the handlebar toward my upper body and leaned forward. This made it for me first time possible to lift the bike more than a few centimetres. But it shouldn’t be good for balancing. So I Hope your video makes me getting it. Because I am not that bd on my bike. Minor tricks I am able too. Jumps (not high) but with all wheels not touching the road. Or standing still or bouncing agains a wall and pedalling beackertest. But the biggest difficulty with wheelies is the fear or Panik the kicks in when you are going backwards. It is imo the biggest problem to fight against the backwards momentum with leaning forward. I think I have to pull my seat deeper. So jumping of gets easier. My problem I drive not with bike shorts but normal shorts and they tend to stick in front of the seat and makes it impossible to slide backwards from the seat if it goes to far backwards. I will let you know how and if your video helped me. Thanks

I have been working on my wheelie for a bit and the biggest tip I got from this video is about the balance between the peddle and break. I have always been on the break 0% or 100% and it makes for a tough time finding that balance point. I have sort of found it but I am excited to try some of the tips from this video.
Been trying to do the wheelie for the longest time and I'm finally getting close thanks to this video. Stepping off and going slow were the key that other videos don't talk about. Thanks! Can you do a bunny hop tutorial?

When you get past vert and pull the brake just enough to bring you back you have it. That back and forth let's you wheelie as long as you want and control your speed.

I tried the first step with my saddle at it's normal height, and I couldn't actually slide off the back. I noticed that your saddle is way low, its like BMX low, with leg bent even when sat on the bike and feet on the ground! Is that what you had in mind?

For the longest time I believed the "wheelie gene" was real. Finally, I got so frustrated I decided to practice every day until I could do it. I didn't realize until then, that my practice was never consistent and focused, and once it was the improvements started to happen. It took about two months of very focused daily practice but finally at 40 years old I can wheelie pretty much forever. It took me a lot longer than some people, and maybe faster than others, but once I got it who cares how long it took!
dude.. I thought the same thing about the 'you have it or you don' t' thing.. its partially true.. but if you really practice like you did (i did the same this year, took about two months as well practicing at any time, anywhere, during rides, after rides, etc) and nailed it. Congrats man. I am also in my early 40's and it feels amazing when kids go 'woooooooooaaaaa' hahahahaha
Isn’t that fun. Especially like really little kids. It’s so weird how knowing nothing at all about riding they stop and point at a wheelie. They’re cool on some primal level!!

Lee, about 7 years ago in one of your classes, you told me that recessive-wheelie-gene line. I want my money back! Kidding man!! I’m 48 now and gonna keep progressing too!
I started mountain biking about 5 years ago with my (then) 12 year old son. I was so much better than him... for the first month. He's been pulling wheelies, manuals, crazy jumps and going down all the gnarliest lines now for the last 4 years. Now I'm 45 and I thought it was too late for me, but then I found these videos. Can't wait to get out at the weekend and start learning to wheelie! Thank you so much for taking the time to make these vids - by far the best mtb vids for us older beginners that I have seen.

Same boat here. Getting back into it at 55 with my 19 year old son. Twenty five years off the trails...advancements in equipment compensating somewhat for the decline in the body. So much fun!!
OMG! Yesterday Alex and I were filming after I was off the bike for weeks, with no wheelie practice but lots of thinking about that sweet balance point. He asked me to try one and ... boom! It was there!
This is so reassuring to see a grandmaster like Lee having the same issues wheeling that I have. Gave me hope that someday I'll be doing those long wheelies too. (and that I'm not the only old MTB, not wheeling). Love your channel!

I tried the first step with my saddle at it's normal height, and I couldn't actually slide off the back. I noticed that your saddle is way low, its like BMX low, with leg bent even when sat on the bike and feet on the ground! Is that what you had in mind?
What gear is good for willing just starting mountain biking willing
How cold is it out there? Looks really cold
I'm 57...I'm hopelessly scared of the balance point...wish me luck
I’m wishing you stoke!!!
I'm 69 yrs. old, I raced for about 10 years in my 30's and I'm still riding simply because it's the most fun you can have with your clothes on. Love your channel because of your positive attitude and excellent teaching skills. I would watch your channel even if I didn't ride!
"...with your clothes on." Brilliant one, mate! XD XD XD
I turned 60, 2 weeks ago, and always say, I am not a day over 17 when riding my bike.
I always ridden, but not much in to stunts etc. A few wheelies as a kid, but now I am going to wheelie and jump this year. - Cheers
Tell me you haven't rode a motorcycle without telling me you haven't ridden a motorcycle. You went first
For the longest time I believed the "wheelie gene" was real.
Yes! This.
dude.. I thought the same thing about the 'you have it or you don' t' thing.. its partially true.. but if you really practice like you did (i did the same this year, took about two months as well practicing at any time, anywhere, during rides, after rides, etc) and nailed it. Congrats man. I am also in my early 40's and it feels amazing when kids go 'woooooooooaaaaa' hahahahaha
all the steos you went through are exactly what i felt when practicing! RIGHT ON
Isn’t that fun. Especially like really little kids. It’s so weird how knowing nothing at all about riding they stop and point at a wheelie. They’re cool on some primal level!!
That's awesome. I've practiced a bunch (25 years worth!) but randomly. New MTB on order. I think I'll throw flats on the outgoing bike and give your plan a go!
I'm 70 and I want to learn how to do this. So, carry on, young fellows. Your elders are watching :)
45 yr old here, new to the sport. Absolutely love this channel, great content, delivered perfectly. If people like me are your target audience, you're really nailing the brief. Keep up the good work!
Welcome to the crew my friend.
You’re killing every video. The style and content are great. Keep them coming.
Thanks Doug!
Sitting in my living room celebrating with you guys! Gives me so much confidence to get it!
Thanks Harvey. keep the stoke!
You guys are on a really good vibe!
Keep Us in touch with Lee's wheelies progression!
We made this a week ago so I'm wondering too!
If I close my eyes and just hear Lee talking I swear all I can imagine is Jordan Peterson teaching mountain bike 😂.
Incredibly accurate
woooah so true! Both voice and analytical-psychological approach quite similar. Especially the 2nd, quite high for such videos/channel's nature.
Disgusting
@@HoloScope I bet you’re a blast to have along on a ride. 😮
Have fun and I hope you and your son are still riding together!
@@JoyOfBike Yes, we are. I'm now going to sneak out and learn wheelies + manuals and then surprise him. I'll post back... Thanks again!
@@macitect I love this plan!!
45 is young man!!! Im in my mid 50's and still seek out the gnarly stuff although it hurts a lot more when I crash. That's why I love these videos. Keep it up.
Same boat here. Getting back into it at 55 with my 19 year old son. Twenty five years off the trails...advancements in equipment compensating somewhat for the decline in the body. So much fun!!
I used to wheelie a lot but haven’t for years. I’m going to start again at 54.
OMG! Yesterday Alex and I were filming after I was off the bike for weeks, with no wheelie practice but lots of thinking about that sweet balance point. He asked me to try one and ... boom! It was there!
Best one ever!
So awesome that you both keep pushing the learning curve and taking us along for the ride.
This is so reassuring to see a grandmaster like Lee having the same issues wheeling that I have. Gave me hope that someday I'll be doing those long wheelies too. (and that I'm not the only old MTB, not wheeling). Love your channel!
EVERYBODY has areas that need improvement. EVERYBODY. Thats what makes the sport so great. There is no end.
I'm 65 andjust Rode for the first time last Spring. I'm going to learn to Wheely, do Jumps and Drops this year.
I'll be using your Videos.
Thank You for the quality instruction.
I love This channel. Like becoming 12 again for an old 49:er geezer like me. Now I am stoked on wheelies.
Just found you guys. Loved this one. Promised myself a 50 pedal wheelie by my 50th birthday. Been half-arsed trying for 40 years. Finally nailed it. And yes, I wheelie every time I can now. ✊
I've made that exact promise, just need to practice more.
I'd think it pretty cool seeing old guys pulling wheelies
Thank you! Love it! Gona learn how to wheelie wheelie do it this time!! 😍😍
You got this!
Im doin wheelies during my teenage years now that im on my 40's i hope i could regain that confident to try doin it again... Thanks guys for this inspiring video.
I bet you can!
@@JoyOfBike thanks men.. I will start practicing in my spare time...
I'm inspired to learn how to wheelie alongside my 9-yo kid. We can both learn to be "wheelie bastards" at the same time. Woop! (I'm 47, by the way.)
Day one of trying this and I've made excellent progress! :) However, my testicles have taken a bit of a pounding
40 and suck at wheelies and manuals. And bunny hops. Basically all skills lol.
I'm 54 and 6'4" ...and I plan on mastering the wheelie this summer. I swear my Cypress DX is begging me to do it.
Gosh wasted my time, watched the intro and everything only to know I can’t wheelie my penny farthing… hopeless
I was born a dare devil but I have tried all my life to learn how to wheelie but I can't keep it up more than 2 inch simply because I never figured out about the peddle trick now I know.
Nice! keep riding and having fun! wheelies are the best :)
His excitement about feeling the balance point legendary..
