I LOVE my flour sack towels. When I was young, I would dry while Gramma washed dishes and they dry better than anything I have ever used plus the bonus of memories of Gramma and how her dishes felt holding them.
Hi i'm new to your channel. I find it interesting to see how different people do things. Yes we also can things here (Europe - Netherlands/ Denmark). But we also always boil/steam cannes, but use a kind if konservative, to procent mold. Jam and pickling i don't cook. An other thing don't wash your eegs. Just dry dirt off, washing remove the Very thin protective barrier, wich make it harder for bacterier to inter the eegs. ( former laboratorium technician here). Just a tip!
Hello! Yes, I generally don't wash eggs until I actually use them. Unfortunately in the US - and specifically in the state I live, it is legally required that eggs must be washed when they are sold.

I had to laugh our loud when I seen you put the towels in the Hoosier cabinet...I put mine in the big drawer on the bottom and in the area you use is where I have always stored the snacks, all my children's friends and now their kids head to that cabinet every time they come to visit. Their spouses will gasp because they ask for food, I love it and it just makes my heart swell. I have come to the conclusion that I just need to come hang with you. LOL

I just watched your video. I am going to be canning apples this way . I have never canned apples in syrup. I have made applesauce and butter and then froze my sliced apples. I never thought to can them! I use the flour sack towels as well! They are the very best as you said! They dry the dishes better than any other towel I have ever tried! Then when they are just to stained to use in the kitchen my husband takes them for the barn or I put them in my horse trailer for when we go camping with the horses. They are great there as well!
I love flour sack towels! My favorite too. And I prefer them to cheesecloth when I'm making and draining homemade cheese. They are an underrated kitchen tool for sure!

I'm about out of reg canning lids and haven't been able to find any. The eggs looked beautiful Constance. So wish we could have chickens where we live. I love the flour sack towels. I have just found your channel and I love it. With your sliced apples have you ever put (what we called red hots) it like a cinnamon candy in little dots in with your apples? My Grandfather used to do that with his and they were so good. Now I can't eat them because I am allergic to the cinnamon. Loves and hugs. God Bless you and your family.
Never thought about canning apples. Great idea!!! I'm putting up tomatoes and salsa this weekend. I have a question about the tattler lids. I noticed that you put it on finger tight. I thought that you lightly put the lid on and then tighten down after they are taken out of the canner. I know there is an older lid and than the E-Z lid which is what I have. Did they change that with the newer lids? Just want to check to make sure I'm not doing it wrong. Thank you Constance - appreciate all you do for this community.
You are correct! I did do it a little looser than the other regular lids. Hard to see that in the video. I still do a mix of lids, as I am not confident enough to dedicate a whole batch to the reusable lids. I will also find myself having to stop and go back, loosen the reusable ones because I snugged them up out of habit. I'll get it one of these days :)
That apple peeling, spirializing & coring doohickey you have looks pretty cool! I like to do this with pears. I never tried apples but you can only make so much pie filling and applesauce so I will probably give it a try.
Constance, great video as always. I combed through your past videos today because I have a few questions. I wanted to make sure you hadn't covered it before i asked, as I know you are busy. I want to store flour, rice, sugar and corn meal for long term, at least a years worth. I was going to vacuum seal them. I put the flour and rice in the freezer as I watched a video by another UA-cam and she said freeze for 3 days then remove to bring to room temp and put the items (portions amount my discretion) in a brown paper sack tape it up them vacuum seal. SO I was all set to do that but then I seen where someone else said mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. So now I am confused. And to top that off my flour and rice have been in fridge for almost a month due to my indecisiveness. Can you please advise?
The way I store things for long term varies by what it is. I have buckets with lids that seal, and have used oxygen absorbers in those. I have also used (and do use) mylar bags with oxygen absorbers as well. I have never heard about using a paper bag. Honestly that seems a little redundant. My guess is that the paper sacks are for inside clear vacuum seal bags? If so, that is probably for blocking light. If you have mylar bags, they already block light, so you wouldn't need them. I hope that helps!

Is there a reason for parboiling versus raw packing?
All of the recipes that I have for doing apples call for parboiling. I actually haven’t seen one that doesn’t.
Ok I thought it was maybe to be able to get more in the jar. Since peaches are raw canned I just figured apples would be the same.

Yes! I actually mention galas as an example in the print version of the recipe on my site. Any apple that is firm and somewhat sweet would work great.

It takes about 2 1/2-2 3/4 lb of apples per pint.
If you pull up her recipe it states 11#.
