What’s so brilliant about this scene is that Sipowicz knew exactly what Fancy was trying to do by inviting him out to dinner - and not just any old place but at a place that serves ribs and is apparently a black-owned establishment with predominantly black customers. But even though Sipowicz knew what the play was, Fancy was still able to get the upper hand in the most intelligent and non-confrontational manner simply by drawing a very clear parallel between Sipowicz’s bigoted and prejudiced feelings and the assumed animosities of the people who work in and regularly patronize the services of that restaurant - and then flipping the script on him right at the end there! This was a _brilliantly_ written scene that offers a great example of how to explore a thorny issue in a way that’s intelligent and doesn’t feel preachy! Kudos to the writers here!

You said this really well. It’s a scene that in a show or movie today would come off as very preachy and unnuanced. But this was so well written and acted that it really came off as genuine, reasonable and realistic.

Fancy chose a tasty way to make an important point. Kudos to the writers! This scene was referenced later when Sipowicz and Fancy stand outside the precinct in Season 8, Ep. 12. It was a long and winding road these two traveled to reach mutual respect and covert admiration.

@Isabel Beckerman If you get a chance to watch more of the series, Sipowicz comes around. Took years, but when Fancy got promoted out of the precinct, they had developed mutual respect. Hopefully there's a youtube clip of their parting dialog - I just saw it this week on a re-run episode. It was cool

So this is a fun scene to watch, except for my personal experience - which was the exact opposite of Andy's. Best ribs I ever had was in Baltimore at a place on Liberty Rd. My wife and I were the only white people in there (we didn't plan it that way.) I did not feel any hostility directed toward my wife or myself, and we were not ignored. We were made to feel welcome by the staff and many of the patrons. I hope in the next life it's always like this, hoping that would be normal.

It was so weird that they resented eachother throughout the years, but they were two different cops who had different views on their work. At the end they always had respect for another. Even after they had the fistfight, they still made up after that.

They resented each other maybe for awhile, but they came to terms and at the end they respected the hell out of each other. After the episode where Andy lost his gun after his son died and Fancy could have had his badge Andy really came to understand how much Fancy respected and appreciated him. It's too bad James McDaniel didn't stay on the show, I really enjoyed his acting and his dynamic with Andy.

I'm not an expert on race relations, but I thought it was extremely smart of fancy to get his point across in this manner. No screaming, no fighting. Just two men sitting down, having some good food, and then the point gets made from an honest perspective. I guess that's the word I would use to describe this scene: honest. It's clear that he's speaking from the heart and he wants to say a lot more, but he's smart enough to know that that won't work with Sipowicz. He wants to actually make his point stick.

C Lee i don’t think that the cast had any issues. Like any real life work setting, the old dogs get older. People move on for the right reasons and sometimes the wrong reasons. And in some environments, the old dogs need to take what they’ve learned and pass it on to the next generation. In the case of NYPD Blue, Andy became the dad of the precinct. He calmed down in his later years, became more of a teacher, and always stood up for the kids even if there was a chance it could come back on him. Not only that, Rita calmed down along the way. Jones learned to lighten up a bit and not be such a Boy Scout, but he also kept his integrity. And in the last few episodes, you can see that Clark was becoming a young Sipowicz. A little more frustrated and hardened by his time on the job. A little hardened from what life had given him with his dad and girlfriend. And Andy stuck around long enough to sit on the other side of the desk. There has yet to be a show on television that shows the circle of life that any job can hold. NYPD Blue nailed it.

A show written in mature way to handle mature subjects without causing more racist division. Boy i miss the 90's.

That says it well and sums up this time period. We were not divided the same way as we are now. There was still intelligence and nuance in our social interactions - and our art. This show - and this scene - exemplifies that. How far we've fallen.

Outside of Dennis Franz, I really liked James McDaniel. Great acting, great boss and a good decent guy. I sorry to see him go.

Don't forget where it worked the other way with Fancy with not just white cops who had a problem with those of other races. His brother was on the job and got jammed up and met Fancy as he arrived for work telling him the cabbie recanted his statement. His brother apparently thought Arthur took care of it but was informed some people on his squad made things right then told him that "4 or 5 people reached out for him last night, not a brother in the bunch!" Sad to have seen him leave the series.
