The piano player is Jim Steinman, he's the man who wrote all of the songs. The two of them came together to form one of the greatest singer-songwriter teams ever.
The album notes list Roy Bittan of the E Street band as a session player. Not sure, but I think the guy with the glasses is him. Stienman also is in the video.
@Thomas Burch OK. I went to the original video and put it on full screen since I really can't see well with it being so small and stopping when I am trying to look. And my facial recognition technology (which I don't have BTW) tells me that the pianist with the glasses is Roy Bittan and pianist later in the video is Jim Steinman. Since videos were seldom if ever filmed over a one day period it probably has to do with who could show up for work on the day they were filming. And I believe the bass player visible in part of the video is Kasim Sulton. And the guitarist is Todd Rundgren. And the pianist you are actually HEARING throughout the video is Roy Bittan because video is not live. The performers are simply miming to the studio produced recording. When MMBxMOB asked "What is that?" it was definitely the piano.
I remember learning about Meat Loaf's death in the wee hours of the night, like way after midnight. And then I couldn't help it, I had to listen to this song. The lyrics were just too perfect for the moment. When morning came...he was gone. Like a bat out of hell, I'll be gone when the morning comes Oh, when the night is over, like a bat out of hell I'll be gone, gone, gone Like a bat out of hell, I'll be gone when the morning comes But when the day is done and the sun goes down And the moonlight's shinin' through Then like a sinner before the gates of Heaven I'll come crawlin' on back to you...
And for what it’s worth… An extraordinarily kind human being. He’s missed by so many in so very many ways for so very many reasons. Rest peacefully in that dashboard light, Meat❤️❤️❤️
I have listened to the ending 100’s of times, saw him in concert in 96. That’s why I like watching those that never had the pleasure, discovering music I/we have known for 40 odd years. Not just Meatloaf, but he does get some of the best reactions!
The definition of Rock Opera. Meatloaf was the best! Theatrical! Although I was around during this era I was into other music. Just discovered his emense talent since he died. Thank you!
The "band" Some of the best musicians in the world... Meat Loaf - lead vocals, backing vocals, percussion Todd Rundgren - guitar, percussion, keyboards, backing vocals (Also produced the album) Kasim Sulton Roy Bittan - piano, keyboards (Bruce Springseen's keyboard player!!!!!) Steve Margoshes - piano Cheryl Hardwick - piano Jim Steinman - keyboards, percussion, Roger Powell - synthesizer Edgar Winter - saxophone (You definitely need to check out Edgar Winter!! Phenomenal musician!!!!!) Max Weinberg - drums (He was only Bruce Spingsteen's drummer and did Late Night with Conan O'Brien and The Tonight Show!!) John "Willie" Wilcox - drums Ellen Foley - lead & backing vocals (Remember, it was Ellen Foley who sang on the album. Karla De Vito sang on the tour) Rory Dodd - backing vocals
I saw him live in New York 3 or 4 years ago. I believe he was having issues with his back and needed surgery. But he came out and performed as if it was going to be the last concert of his life. It was 110% energy. Amazing.
Now *THIS* is how you react to Meat Loaf! All other reactors, take note. I legitimately cheered when you said: "We're having that part, again", laughed when you gave up and walked away while at the same time I was blinking back tears. Just a brilliant reaction, thank you so much. As for the piano player, the person you *see* in the video is Jim Steinman, who wrote all the songs. But the person you *hear* playing is Roy Bittan of Bruce Springsteen's E Street band. Jim played piano on the first live tour with Meat to promote the album, and is an accomplished pianist himself, but Jim wanted Bittan to play on the record. The drummer is Max Weinberg, also of the E Street band. The lead guitar is Todd Rundgren, who only agreed to produce the album because he thought it was a hilarious spoof of Springsteen. I never got that myself, and I think it was coincidence that Springsteen and Steinman just happened to be writing their songs at around the same time, but neither set out to "copy" or "spoof" the other. To give a literary analogy, I think of Springsteen as John Grisham, and Steinman as JRR Tolkien. The motorbike sound halfway through the song is Rundgren doing it on his guitar, and he left both Meat and Jim sitting there open-mouthed when he did the whole thing in one take, leading straight into the solo. Meat has called both Jim and Todd "a genius", and Jim has called Todd "a genius", so that gives you an idea of the hierarchy when they were all in the recording studio! Finally, that ending...it's only Meat holding a C6 note for seven seconds, no big deal... ;) There's a radio station here in the UK that plays nothing but classical music (Mozart, Bach, Brahms, Haydyn, opera, arias, movie scores etc). When Meat died last year, they put a post on their social media pages about his passing, paying tribute to his powerful, astonishing, iconic voice and nigh-on four-octave vocal range. If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about his talent, I don't know what will. Once again, thank you for a wonderful reaction. I genuinely still have chills from watching it. Edit: oh, yes; and Meat would definitely love that nickname! ;)
When I was 16 I bought the album in 1981. I took the bus home and put the pickup on. I lay down on the sofa with the cover and lyrics on the innersleeve and started listening. It was amazing. And now, 40 years later, it is t´still amazing.
I feel as if a part of my youth died with the passing of this wonderful entertainer and genuine human being. Marvin Lee Aday (Michael) AKA Meatloaf your musical performances will live on! Thanks for the decades of memories.
Lots of suggestions. The album is GREAT. Not a bad track on the album. You want a hard rocker, check out "All Revved Up with No Place to Go". You want something soft, listen to "Heaven Can Wait"
"Bat Out of Hell" is a concept album, sometimes known as rock opera. A concept album centers around one theme or idea and should be listened to as a unit and not by individual songs. Other concept albums are Sgt. Peppers (Beatles), Tommy (Who), Queen II (Queen), Paradise Theater (Styx). There are many, usually in the late 60's through the 70's. They were very ambitious projects from very ambitious creative teams. They were hardly, if ever, the first album from the team like "Bat Out of Hell" was.
Magnificent! Us boomers surely had the best music EVER!!! So blessed to have been 15 when this came out! You took the words right out of my mouth.... please??? The above was my first introduction to Meatloaf. Miss you Meatloaf. I'm sure he's rocking up in heaven with so many new mates ♥️
The amazing guitar work on this song is by Todd Rundgren who, according to Meat Loaf, played all guitar parts on the song, did it in one take, and took about 15 minutes to do it.
I saw him live in the late 2000s or early 2010s. He was long past his prime at that point, but you would never have guessed it by the way he performed. He poured it all out on stage even then, and it was amazing!
Love your reaction to this. Meat Loaf was one on his own. He was the consummate live performer, and never failed to blow me away when I saw him live back in the 80's. His death was one of those that really shook me. Just a great rock and roll man, with one of the greatest tracks of all time.
I was lucky enough to see him live a few times, his concerts were outstanding !! Everyone in the crowd were all ages and knew the lyrics to every one of The Bat Out of Hell songs and were belting out with him x x
Remember, the name of the whole album is also the name of this song. It's like the overture in a classical piece, and that means you'll hear bits of themes from the whole thing. That's why you heard a riff from Two Out of Three at the beginning and Paradise is paralleled here.
He was doing football in college and he got a bad injury! To watch him sing was magical! When he was interviewed! Listen to the songs on Bat out of he'll album! You will be amazed!
I love Big Sexy, too! Love your comparisons, the algorithm brought me. I think I’ll sub and stick around if you don’t mind! There are only a couple hands full of artists like him, that just had bigger possibilities than existed at the time. Another example of theatrical rock is Queen and the genius of Freddy Mercury. Pink Floyd and Roger Waters. Prince and his Revolution. But I am a lyrics person. When they break through and have just nothing else like them, that innovation and passion and their heads in the sky with the possibilities, it is life changing. Michael Jackson, Jeff Lynne and ELO. The entire album and live concerts is a story. It is greatest listened to in order.
Meat usually had oxygen or even passed out after each performance. This is before the days of synchronisation and mix n masterd you see today. This album spent over 522 weeks in the UK charts...and sold over 43 million copies R. I. P. Sir ...ill never forget your concerts ❤🎉❤
I've listened so many times to this song. Everytime I'm exhausted (in a positive way) when it's over. Meat Loaf manages to take me on a rollercoaster journey of my emotions, with every single song. Although they're not very often requested my favourite songs at the moment are his versions of "Martha", "Original sin", "No matter what/Home by now" and "A kiss is a terrible thing to waste".
LOL!! I loved your intro to this. "Big Sexy". You nailed it right on the head. He was a 300lb sex symbol, and he never knew it. He was the most beautiful man in my eyes. His allure and his charisma were like no other. You mentioned that this sounds like I Won't do That. That song was off on his Bat into Hell album. This one is on his Bat Outta Hell album. Lol. The visual similarity is fantastic. The best way to define Meatloaf is rock opera. Jim Steinman was the musical genius of their collaboration, but Meatloaf was the absolute life and soul with his amazing vocals and performances. RIP, Meat. ❤❤
I'm sure someone else had mentioned it but as impressed as your are with the instrumentation, you should know there's no sampling of any motorcycle engine in this song. It's all played on the guitar. 🎸
From the Google: "As a singer, he had astonishing capacity. In his songs, he can be heard singing from a bass F2 to a stratospheric falsetto E♭6, and everything in between. Vocally, he is a heldentenor, with a powerful, dramatic voice in a tenor register, with huge bodily resonance."
MAN, I'LL TELL YA. I LOVE WATCHING YOUR REACTION HERE. THAT'S THE SAME REACTION I HAD 46 YEARS AGO HEARING IT FOR THE 1ST TIME MYSELF! THANKS FOR TAKING ME BACK! 🙂🙂🙂
got this album when it first came out. getting ready to go out and hang with friends on a friday night, this was what I listened to. If you want to blow away the cobwebs from a work week, this is it
A good way to end your listening experience tonight, just listen to his wonderful voice. Tomorrow is the one year of his passing and I will be listening to him all day and crying.
A year ago today (20th Jan 2022) He sadly passed away, The music industry lost a unique vocalist. RIP Meat keep on rocking in heaven. With new and young reactors hearing your records you will never be forgotten. For crying out loud should be your next reaction MMBxMOB
When I was a kid in the '70s, my family lived uphill and through the woods from an outdoor concert venue. We could sit out on our patio and listen for free. I got to hear so many: The Allman Brothers, Blondie, Journey, Tom Petty, The Ramone, and many more, including this: Meat Loaf on the Bat Out of Hell Tour.
It seems you may have missed the fact that at the end of the Paradise by the Dashboard Light BOTH of them were singing. Not just him. They both wanted it over.
Objects In the rear view mirror(may appear closer than they are) You want music lyrical and visual play this masterpiece is another level. It's a must listen
This reactor does what you should do as a reactor. He listens to the song, allows himself to feel it, and gives a professional analysis of how it affected him. Thank you for your work.
Meatloaf is an amazing performer but don't forget Jim Steinman, the genius who wrote every hit he ever had. The man also wrote the soundtrack to a brilliant rock and roll movie. Check out Nowhere fast from Streets of fire
Bat out of Hell comes before Paradise by the dashboard light comes next. You have to hear 2 out of 3 ain't bad. If you want check him out on Ghost Hunters. He had a ball He's so chill. You get to see his personality. His 1st guest appearance is the best
When I was a kid and DVDs where a big thing to collect my mom started buying me Artists Albums/Greatest hits on DVD so I could watch their music videos whenever I wanted to since MTV and VH1 weren’t playing music all the time and started with reality tv and Meatloafs Bat out of Hell album was the 1st she gave me. I miss throwing it on and having it play on my thick back tv 📺 dancing around my room lol
This is probably the most well produced album ever. It was made when Bruce Springsteen was on hiatus from making records so they had the two best players from E. Street band, both among the top five in rock history on their respective instrument, Roy Bittan on piano and Max Weinberg on drums join them. Kasim Sulton, Roger Powell and producer Todd Rundgren from Utopia handles bass, synths and guitar respectively. Some tracks had Edgar Winter playing saxophone. Meat Loaf on lead vocals with Rory Dodd and Ellen Foley on backing vocals.
Meat Loaf has sung with Pavarotti. After singing in a Central Park production of Shakespeare's As You Like It in 1972, wealthy art patrons offered the 25-year-old $60,000 to train his voice and make his debut at the MET. "I went, 'No, I can't do that, because I'll wind up in prison for murder of the conductor.' I may be an opera singer, but I have the rebellious nature of a true rock and roller."
Compare and Contrast with "Tonight at the London Palladium | Bat Out of Hell (Musical)": ua-cam.com/video/zH0dygy_dxA/v-deo.html (Jim and Meat put many of Jim's songs into a Musical (telling the story you keep asking about) and, much to everyone's surprise Andrew Polec and Christina Barrington did a version of this song that's as good as the original. (not a "replacement for", it's just another version that's worthy of watching along with this video (and Meat Loaf Live with the MSO version))
At least part of the Meatloaf mystique' is Jim Stineman. He wrote and arranged both "bat Out of Hell" and BOH2, found Meatloaf and directed him to be Meatloaf. Saying that, the man can sing, act and put on a helluva show.
The track Bat Out Of Hell was the first track on side one of the album and was meant to be the "Ultimate Motorcycle Crash" song while Paradise By The Dashboard Light was the third song on side 2. To give you a little perspective. I still have the vinyl LP. Damn I feel so old!
Love Meatloaf .. Just saw a video of Meat singing the U.S. National Anthem!! I put him up there next Whitney’s version. Omg! Love Bat Out Of Hell 🦇🦇 You gotta watch The Rocky Horror Picture Show! Meatloaf is featured in it ❤👄
Watch the official video for "Objects in the Rearview Mirror (May appear closer than they are)", and try holding back a tear. You can't do it unless you never lost someone.
Jim Steinman played the piano, wrote the songs Todd Rundgren produced the album and orchestrated the singers background singing. Todd also played guitar on this album and played the guitar on this song He is a really great guitarist, The motorcycle sound in this song was Todd on guitar
Todd Rundgren, who was crucial to this whole album even existing, on motorcycle guitar (whatever that is) for this song. Anyway, vintage rock opera from the '70s and one of my desert island albums. Thanks for playing it.
The song writer, Jim Steinman plays keyboards in the video. He can best be seen at 7:41 and 9:23 . He passed away in 2021, less than a year before Meat Loaf, in 2022. It's so poignant to see both of them together in this video. They were pure greatness. RIP Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf.
Jim Steinman told Todd Rundgren that he wanted a song about the biggest motorcycle crash of all time. This is what he got. The ending was "the biggest motorcycle crash of all time."
It’s no a continuation of Paradise. Remember, he says “I’ll never break my promise or forget my vows but now I’m praying for the end of time so I can end my time with you.”
OK. I found the video and watched it three times plus the end three times. Very powerful stuff. I enjoy your depth when dealing with these powerful voices. Freddie and Meat Loaf are miles apart in so many ways but right side by side in others. I cannot think of another person to fit this mold though there is probably someone in Metal (I don't know Metal). Keep going. Meat Loaf has a few others in the Bat Outta Hell genre, "You took the words right outta my mouth", "Two outta three ain't bad"
The piano player is Jim Steinman, he's the man who wrote all of the songs. The two of them came together to form one of the greatest singer-songwriter teams ever.
The album notes list Roy Bittan of the E

@Thomas Burch OK. I went to the original video and put it on full screen since I really can't see well with it being so small and stopping when I am trying to look. And my facial recognition technology (which I don't have BTW) tells me that the pianist with the glasses is Roy Bittan and pianist later in the video is Jim Steinman. Since videos were seldom if ever filmed over a one day period it probably has to do with who could show up for work on the day they were filming. @@chicochi3 If memory serves, I believe you are right about Kasim Sulton. Wasn't he with the touring band also?
And what a team
I remember learning about Meat Loaf's death in the wee hours of the night, like way after midnight. And then I couldn't help it, I had to listen to this song. The lyrics were just too perfect for the moment. When morning came...he was gone.

The “Bat Out of Hell” album is a story. It would be fun if you did a reaction to the whole album.
Yes. I'm still waiting for a reactor to do For Crying Out Loud. ❤️
@@LillyMarz777 On a hot summer night, would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?
this guy has problems to realise the lyrics of one song. Don´t let him listen to a whole album.

Yes it would.

"For crying out loud" you know I love you! Goosebumps
Totally agree! His best song!!!
Favorite Meatloaf song and one of the best songs of all time (inho)
@@yankeesmegw yup
My favorite of his songs - by far.
Both Meat and Jim have described "For crying out loud" as Jim's "masterpiece" - and I agree.

The piano is Jim Steinman the songwriter for these songs. It was a great partnership between Jim and Meatloaf.
Jim was the genius behind Meat Loaf and Bonnie Tyler's theatrical hits, Both Meat Loaf and Alice Cooper had great theatrical stage performances

Janis and Meatloaf up in Rock and roll heaven...can you imagine it? Freaking powerhouse performers.
Happy 80th Birthday Janis.
Miss both so much ♥️
I have always listened to Meatloaf
Objects In the rear view mirror(may appear closer than they are) You want music lyrical and visual play this masterpiece is another level. It's a must listen
Meatloaf was an Asthmatic, the kept oxygen backstage for him between songs
This reactor does what you should do as a reactor. He listens to the song, allows himself to feel it, and gives a professional analysis of how it affected him. Thank you for your work.
It’s one of the best vocal and dramatic performances in a rock opera song
I still get chills 40 years later
By the way 20,000,000 records sold of Bat out of Hell in the late 70s, when that really was something!!!
My favorite Meatloaf song. This is track one on the album. Todd Rundgren on the guitar. He also was the producer.
Best way to describe Meatloafs videos and music is "Strap in you're going for a ride"
This song stays in my head 24/7.
Compare and Contrast with "Tonight at the London Palladium | Bat Out of Hell (Musical)":

(Jim and Meat put many of Jim's songs into a Musical (telling the story you keep asking about) and, much to everyone's surprise Andrew Polec and Christina Barrington did a version of this song that's as good as the original. (not a "replacement for", it's just another version that's worthy of watching along with this video (and Meat Loaf Live with the MSO version))
Great reaction to an amazing artist!
Thank you so much!!
Meatloaf is featured in it ❤👄
The revving bike was Tod Rungen on guitar!! The whole album is a story - it's a work of genius.
You reacted appropriately sir. Well done!
The guy on piano is Jim Steinman - writer of their songs.
Watch the official video for "Objects in the Rearview Mirror (May appear closer than they are)", and try holding back a tear. You can't do it unless you never lost someone.
You need to react to "Dead Ringer for Love" it's a duet with Cher. Both of them are fantastic.
His music will always stand to the test of time
8:58 that sound you were hearing was the piano, and the guitar 😅playing exactly the same thing at the same time
Jim Steinman played the piano, wrote the songs Todd Rundgren produced the album and orchestrated the singers background singing. Todd also played guitar on this album and played the guitar on this song He is a really great guitarist, The motorcycle sound in this song was Todd on guitar
Rocky horror picture show!! He was amazing in that ❤
"You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth" is another banger from the same "Bat Out of Hell" album.
Todd Rundgren, who was crucial to this whole album even existing, on motorcycle guitar (whatever that is) for this song. Anyway, vintage rock opera from the '70s and one of my desert island albums. Thanks for playing it.
This album came out in 1977 so it predates the song Anything For Love by 16 years.
The motorcycle sounds on this song is actually done on a guitar played by Todd Rundgren
There's a band called Sleep Token you might like. They dropped a song a few days ago called The Summoning. Good place to start.
And that moment in the video for "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad", when Meat sits down beside Jimmy at the piano. 🥰😭❤
@@ctuckwell6562 Yes, you're exactly right. I'm glad you mentioned that touching moment. Seeing them together like that was very special.
Jim Steinman told Todd Rundgren that he wanted a song about the biggest motorcycle crash of all time. This is what he got. The ending was "the biggest motorcycle crash of all time."
Weird Al did a Meatloaf/Steinman style parody called "Stop Forwarding That Crap to Me"
It’s no a continuation of Paradise. Remember, he says “I’ll never break my promise or forget my vows but now I’m praying for the end of time so I can end my time with you.”
the piano is jim sienman drums max weinburg bas is kasim sultan guitar is todd
Meat Loaf and David Bowie are the best theatrical performers EVER!
Bat out of Hell is like the ultimate demo for... like, everyone who participated.
Talk about instrumentation, the motor cycle sounds were done by Todd Rundgren on the guitar
The motorcycle engine at the end is all Todd Rundgren on guitar.
