Thank you for mentioning the Hollywood String Quartet. They were formed by Felix and Eleanor Slatkin (he played first violin, she played cello). Felix also had a career as a conductor, and their son Leonard Slatkin became an even more famous conductor. And I loved your comment about Rafael Kubelik's Schubert Ninth: "Not great, but O.K." For me that could describe just about everything Kubelik recorded (and he, like Leonard Slatkin, was the son of a major violinist: Jan Kubelik).
Beecham's 3 and 5 are wonderful. But in the 6th I think he's mincing. One of the best is actually an Ormandy/PO disc, which was coupled with an equally fine Schubert 4. That will have to wait for Ormandy stereo box 2. Lotte Lehmann did a Winterreise but the classic female one I think is Brigitte Fassbaender's intense, take no prisoners one on DG
The Hollywood SQ really deserves a box. Lots of fine recordings.

Leipiziger Streichquartett did all the string quartets on MDG. It is a nice set that was rewarded the DiaPason D'or and Deutsche Schallplattenpreis.
