  • Today John from to the garage Shows you how he eliminated the irritating rattle from his.
    SGS / U.S.Pro-tool stainless steel 72" tool chest.
    Whenever the tool chest is moved or a drawer opened or closed there is a terrible tinnie ringing from these tool boxes. Fortunately, it is very very easy to resolve and in this video, John shows you how to do it with no tools and a couple of thin cable ties.

    Legend. Absolute racket mine was making on arrival, thought there was something wrong with it. Bought mine from Homebase, sorted out the cable ties today and the noise is no longer. Cheers

    I can confirm this rattle is annoying. Here it is the way I fixed it on mine.
    Remove at least the 3 top drawers in the middle section so you have some space to see the locking mechanism linkage at the top. You will see a few bolts on this linkage and you also will see how stupidly loose the linkage system is. Use a spanner or a small ratchet and tighten the nuts just enough to stop making the rattle. As you are doing this, you can apply a bit of grease around the bolts/linkage so everything runs even more smooth and no more rattles. Put the drawers back on and call it a job done. No more annoying rattles.
    However, I have other issues with this bench that I wish it could be of easy fix like this rattle.

    To stop the noise you can just tighten the 4 nuts that hold the locking mechanism by removing the top middle draw, I did it to mine and it works perfect

    Excellent video. I have 2 questions for you , what about fitting a vice to the bench would it be able to tighten up with the wood compressing and what do you use in the top draw to organise your mole grips please? Think it is different to your answer further below? Thanks in advance.

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Andrew. Sorry misinterpreted the question. They are actually screwdriver clip rails like the link here
      amzn.to/2VZm1TE
      I have not screwed them down the are really handy to hold all sorts of tools in place.
      Yes the worktop is they tough so attaching a vice is very possible and I will be doing so there soon.

    Not a fan of using grease on the runners as it can attract dust and crud over time. I have currently a different make but with the same closing system. If you take a drawer out and look at the back I am sure you will see a plastic or neoprene bush that the drawer clips into to hold it. I put some silicone grease on that and it eased the opening and closing greatly. Just waiting for the 55'' versio of this box to arrive.

    two good videos you've posted for this :) - i've been eyeing one up myself recently with the main purpose to be a new location to put my metal lathe on - any ideas on what weight the worktop will take - would it take the weight of a 170KG metal lathe do you think? - cheers :)

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Gary. I don't know for certain in that I have not seen a safe working load on it, but my instinct is that it won't even notice the weight. The work top is thick and solid. The body is robust and although I would predict the castors as the weakest element, They are mighty heavily built. I think as long as you are not moving it from one side of your workshop to the other every day over a roughcast concrete surface, then it would be fine.
      170Kg sounds quite heavy for a hobby lathe?
      If its a reasonable size then I would just check out that the working height is not too high for comfortable operation?

    Hi I am thinking of purchasing one of these tool boxes. Is there anything that holds the drawers closed when unlocked, nothing worse than drawers that open on their own

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  4 роки тому

      Yes but its not particularly strong.The drawers slide without resistance to the nearly shut position and then you have to push them to achieve full closure for the last 8mm. If you have heavily filled drawers and then push it around on rough concrete without using the key to lock it, then drawers will pop open. I Know cos it happened😁. The value for money based on price and robustness is very hard to ignore though.

    How’s this box getting on after all this time? Not in the trade anymore and just damaged my snap on box. with the insurance money I’m considering something like this instead since it’s now only for home use.

    Hi John. Is that fridge magnet on your stainless box ?????

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  3 роки тому

      Yes, it is. (well spotted)
      Its Ferritic stainless steel.
      These same tool chests are ofen used by chefs in Kitchen environments as well, and Ferritic stainless is food safe as it doesn't contain Nickel. Its not as resistant to corrosion as the non magnetic variants but significantly more resistan than coated steel sheet.
      hope that helps
