Great advice, but how will they manage diseases, rabies being only one example. What will be done about the predators that would love a kitty snack and will injury or kill them? What about road traffic and the emotions of an innocent, unaware driver who strikes one? What about other neighbors who don't want cats in their yard leaving little surprises and disease everywhere or who are also cat abusers? Lastly, what about their children who become attached to these cats and will be witness to all the negative things that are likely to happen?

Janey, a lot of people say you cabt feed a barn cat or they won't hunt, but i have not found that to be true. Ive seen some darned good hunter's that were well fed. The sad truth is, cats hunt for sport. Thats what cats do! Some cats eat what they kill and some dont. They can also be pets and still hunt! One of the best hunters we ever had, slept on the end of my kids bed!😊

I was raised on a dairy farm. We had numerous barn cats and lots of people would just drop off unwanted kittens to our farm.
The cats were very independent, and not social like our pet cat. We made sure they had water access, milk that we stripped from cows…no food. Their food source was rodents. They slept in straw in the barns. My dad always said their job was to keep the rodent population down.
If you make it too comfortable for them they won’t be interested in hunting for food. Good luck!

My neighbors indoor cat, stops over when she’s let out and hunts quite successfully. When they leave out of town as they have a second home, I’m always disappointed that the garden helper is absent.
Those two orange kitties are too cute and look domesticated to me. I didn’t hear one hiss and only have watched videos on feral cats becoming domesticated or rescued.
Last word, I’m very concerned about kids torturing small animals. It’s disturbing on many levels and maybe a sign of something even worse.
I hope that third kitty is alive.

Theyre very cute! Unsolicited advise from a vet: During their quaratine phase please emake sure to wash hands really well after being around the new cats (or ideally cjange clothes too) to help keep Monty safe from disease. And since they will be in a crate for a bit, it would be a good time to brkng them to the vet for vaccines.

You need a small “barn” or shed-like structure that will be their new outside home. This way they’ll make that their territory. The cats are beautiful, and they are a perfect addition to your property. But make them a permanent shelter . Hopefully the last “victim” is found and reunited with her friends.❤ The office could be their home, cats are clean, so they will be so happy there. Just a thought 😊

Locking them up at night defeats the purpose of a” barn cat “. Most rodent activity happens at night. The cats however DO need somewhere to go. “Barn cats” are called that for a reason. If someone doesn’t have a barn, they need some sort of large shelter for them.

We live in similar rural area with kind of close neighbors. We have adopted 3 “barn cats”. Clipped ear means they are outdoor purposed cats with shots, neutered, etc so someone can tell from a distance. Good plan Janey! Caged for a month, feeding with interaction and staying near by while they eat, loving calm kid interactions… you will see those cats become friendly and happy outdoor family cats. I got two barn cats from my local animal shelter. They told me they were feral. In three weeks they running up to us wanting us to hold them and love on them. They could easily be house cats! They just needed some tenderly love and care. We kept them pinned up indoors for a week. And then I put them in a kennel and put them outside for another week. We have lots of farm animals. They got use to the noise and seeing all the different animals. Now they fit right in. I feed them at dusk and lock them up every night (We have stray cats that roam at night) and let them out during the day and they stay with us. ❤ 🐈 🐈‍⬛ They love my greenhouse!

So happy you are able to give better home to these cats. I have cats who are both indoor/outdoor with microchip operated pet door, and my cousin works with TNR of feral cats. She does fund-raising and provides this service for free, so if yours need spayed/neutered, research availability in your area for these type of organizations. There are cooling mats, heated shelters/mats, heated water bowls that won't freeze, of course straw is always a good, inexpensive bedding option. If you build a small house for them (maybe not necessary for your situation) make sure you provide TWO entrance/exit doors. Just a little research on feral/barn cats and you'll be all set. Lucky cats!

You will be able to pet them and they’ll start trusting you. It takes time but you will be the person and they will respond to kindness and eventually, let you pet them and want to wander around with you. I do need to get them spayed and neutered. You don’t want babies and shots as long as they have a safe place to live in constant food they will respond to your love and kindness.

My goodness, I have never seen so many "concerned" people over barn cats? Hahahah, wow! So....What I loved most about this video was the experience you and your daughter were having together, which she is Adorable by the way, she reminds me of my 9 and 11 year old daughters--I just love it---also, appreciate learning about the master gardener course and temperennials!! It makes total sense why & that they would market this way!!
When I began learning about flowers, I told my mother how ridiculous these companies were when it came to the tags and told her not to listen to what they put on them because so many just were not correct for our area-----BUT! NOW I "know" the real reason why they do it this way and I will make sure to pass it on since it really is the small things like this that cause negativity in society simply because the understanding is not there. I believe it becomes part of our responsibility to pass on our knowledge and create an understanding, because people do require it for peace of mind in a world where so much IS going on....Anyways, Thank you SOOOO much for sharing your gardening experiences, I love to learn and be surrounded by like minded, intelligent people, it is so refreshing! ~Candi

How exciting! Ferals are very food motivated so feed them regularly and they'll always be there. I sat with my cat's kittens when I feed them and they became attached to me and recognized my voice. I kept mom but rehomed four of her kittens and two other ferals I found. They all went to be barn cats. All are well and one is very good at getting moles and mice. Make sure you get them spayed and neutered as they get pregnant at 4 months. Think rabbits. Plus they need their shots and regular flea and tick. They are excellent climbers and my cat loves to sit in my
veggie and flower beds. I'd pay attention to toxic plants. Orange cats are very friendly . You'll love them! Oh and they also hunt birds so keep that in mind.

Good presentation, Janey. There's enough information, but not so much that a person would feel overwhelmed.
I wish there were sunset zones for the eastern US. I live on the southeastern NC coast, zone 8b. This week the heat index is in the triple digits. The actual temperature is not horrible, but 85% humidity makes it hotter. I work up a sweat walking to my mailbox. I have much more concern for how my plants will handle the heat and hot sun as my shade is limited. Most of my gardening has been done in northwest Ohio and southern Michigan before moving back home to NC. Coastal gardening is different from anything I've tried. I've also found sometimes plants tags and other information sources are at odds over plant care. Gardening is one big science experiment.

Wonderful that they will be together as they are bonded, they will get a good home and help you with the rats and mice. It's a win win for you both. Give it a few days and they will eventually come round and eat. I would cover part of the cage with a dark blanket so they feel safer until they get used to you. Put ice cubes in the water bowl.

You are so kind Janey. The image of the one cat on top of the other was so cute, a frame able picture for sure. You are giving your girls all of these great experiences, they are great kids and so lucky to have parents like you and Jason. I so enjoy your videos we never know what little surprises you have in store for us! ❤️❤️

Look into ringworm for sure. When my kids were young, we visited Neighbor in Pennsylvania. Our kids hugged and we love Debi so cats and ended up with ringworm son. Not fun! I don’t wanna be a Debbie downer, but it’s a real thing look into it for sure.

Glad those cats are going to a better home. I expect there is more details on the situation but I sure hope a visit from animal welfare officers to educate that family, the children may be doing the harm but the parents are responsible and what other horrible things are happening?!

Hi Janey, the best thing my husband and I did was to get barn cats. We move to a location and hour and a half out side of Sacramento ( both my husband and I born and raised in the suburbs of Sacramento area) on 2acres and had the same issues. The cats we got were in a crate for four weeks as well and they are the best hunters. They are very friendly with my husband and I however do have stranger danger issues( my grown children and grand children and any other stranger they want nothing to do with! I think this will be perfect for your issues with rats and occasional gopher!

Good for you taking those kitties, your saving their lives, I'm sure they'll have much better lives as you will take great care of them... but the rodent problem isn't only in the country, and cats may not be as successful in getting rid of them as you'd want... we have to set traps have 2 cats and they haven't stopped them yet, have 3 dogs and they go after them outside, so montie may be as successful as the kitties are.

We had a ferral cat once, it took some time but eventually they will be friendly but only to those who feed them. He wouldn't let anyone else near him. Once we put him in a cat carrier because we were moving snd he busted his nose open head butting the carrier until he got out

Loved your presentation! I took our Master Gardener course last fall. Almost have my 40 volunteer hours in. I work full time so it's taking me a bit to get them. Our county hasn't had an active group for years. Now we have had multiple people show interest in taking the class this fall.

my kids got ringworm from barn cats when they were young. It can be miserable. I would look into it-
    Most
barn cats do not have shots given so look into it and be careful

I empathize with you on the rat populations. Shelter, standing water and a source of food a human would eat are what rats are drawn to. Rodenticides are out of the question. The cats are a great idea. I think you've chosen a winning solution in many ways.

Hi Janey and Sadey ❤ was super nice of you to adopt those cats. So cute when Sadey was inside the cage 😂 I really hope those cats do their intended job, you guys have worked a lot on this property to get it to where it’s at now.
IDEA: maybe a video about house plants and propagation? That Pathos, and others?
With summer scorching just about everything where I am, we tend to compensate with indoor plants.
Also, neither you nor Robbie have a Plumaria plant/tree. Is there a reason or is it a preference?

Planting everything in gopher baskets will help with the gophers.
They are far too prolific. They multiply faster than you can trap/catch them.

Vets in my area recommend one and a half litter boxes per cat. I also noticed she don’t have any extra water out there for them. They generally like fresh moving water. There are available and pet stores battery operated, and perhaps solar operated water. Watch out they may go after your fountain water! And then I’m wondering if you might consider having them neutered or they’ll be having babies with every stray cat or cat in the neighborhood lol

A lot of the local shelters in the Sac Valley have barn cat programs that let you adopt (I think for free) cats for this purpose.

  • @carolynlingor
    @carolynlingor 2 дні тому

Now would be the best time to get them neutered since they will need to be confined for a bit while they recover. It's really important to get it done before you release them
Our 3 ferals adopted us and are quite tame, but they have been here 4 years now. We only used wet food to entice them into a trap in order to get them fixed. Since then we leave out bowls of kibble because they have done such a great job eradicating the rodents that they need a bit more food. They still hunt though, catching lizards and an occasional bird, but mostly they leave non-rodents alone.

    Cats are 100% carnivores
Please read the cat food label
If the first 2 ingredients are meal or anything other than pure meat your cats will not live long or healthy lives
They also need some wet food
Single ingredient wet food is best
Even though they are outdoor they still need a good diet❤
