As a wind player with access to samples but no access to the myriad wind instruments I DIDN'T learn how to play, this literally brought me to tears. I need one of these SO bad.
I'm on the point of purchasing the breath controller, however; not only you demonstrated its potential but also on a 'killer' jazz standard "Giant Steps", which is not for the faint hearted 😊. Well done👏👏👏👏👏
I bought one of these. Not cheap and took ages to ship to the UK, but glad I got it. Had to thank Doctor Mix for his YT video showing just how good it can sound.
I came here for the breath controller demo. Commented just to say that I hadn't listened to Kettel in years -- I absolutely loved Volleyed Iron back in college. Thanks for reminding me about some great music =)
What may or may not help you is learning and developing tonguing technique. It will definitely help you with note starts and ends . Explore different variations such as triple tonguing for triplets etc.
Just great! Well used with the modular too! I have my own demo of this coming out pretty soon... been working on it far too long. You really know what you are doing!
SWAM stands for "Synchronous Waves Acoustic Modeling". According to their website, "the SWAM engine combines concepts of Physical Modeling and Behavioral Modeling with the Multi-Vector/Phase-Synchronous Sample-Morphing technique." It is NOT the same as the sample modeling technique used in many other products. Their approach allows the expressive information to be incorporated into the mathematical model that produces the sound. This allows for much more realism and nuance than sample modeling which typically includes vast libraries of actual instrument sound samples. Performer expression information is used to index into the library to retrieve samples that correspond to dynamics associated with the performance. Because sample modeling only has a fixed number of samples, it can be less fluid and less realistic as the multidimensional expressiveness information dynamically changes throughout the performance. Swam gives you tools to help map your MIDI device expression info into their instruments, but to do it well can be a non-trivial exercise.
since you have the clarinet ready Can you go ahead and do that insane slur run thing and the rest of the beginning of Rhapsody in Blue? Thanks in advance
My TEC controller just arrived today. I’ll preface by saying I’m completely new to midi. I’ve got 20 years experience playing classical violin, including professionally in a symphony for about 5 years. I saw someone using the TEC controller with Audio Modeling instruments and I was sold. I’ll admit, half of me hates it because orchestral instruments are the hardest to learn and play well. It takes literal decades to become proficient, and even longer to think about being able to claim mastery. Now I can pick up a keyboard, TEC controller, and my iPad and make it sound like I’ve got 10 years experience playing trumpet, despite never having used one. The limiting factor for me is my lack of skill with a keyboard, which I will hopefully be mitigating as I just ordered an open box example of the fantastic You Rock midi guitar. The last thing I’m waiting on is for Audio Modeling to release their woodwind instruments on iPad!
Hi Sounds great. Can I just ask how you insert the 2 USB inputs (keyboard+TEC) into the one port (female) on the iPad's adapter? a simple hub would make the work? Thanks :)
Thats freaking amazing what you did, making the breath controller to play the synth. I have been looking for an instrument i can use for solos, etc, that i can play with my mouth, for acoustic performances, where i use an acoustic guitar and piano.
Always wondered what those breath controllers looked & worked like, weird but cool. Looking forwards to a video(or video series?) on reverbs! Being a VST guy, I'd love to see if there's any amazing(according to you) free reverb VSTs out there. Oh, and Happy birthday!
Holy shit that thing's beautiful, I'm ordering one now! Nice beer btw, Founders would just about have to be my favourite brewery. The CBS made its way down to Australia a fortnight ago and it's delicious!
Color changes around 1:48 and at that EXACT moment I hit the "like" button. Cool effect. Great video. What's going on with the french horn for example, it sends Midi Note-On and then follows up with a moving CC for amplitude?
I only just realized this thing existed so to find review by someone I hold in such high regard is simply perfect! Thanks a lot Benn. Now does it work just as well with other libraries as the SWAM / Samplemodeling stuff?
Fantastic ! I am planning to buy it, but cannot decide between the simple Breath controller vs Breath and Bite controller. Bite controller is more expensive. Do you think it is neccessary ? I cannot play any wind instrument if that matters :) Thanks
- I bought this controller, but I don't know how to connect it to my Tyros3. I guess, it has to be via a PC and a special App. I have none of them. How to get there a less expensive way? Maybe I'm too old (82)? Thank you for your help.
Isn't the aftertouch key for that? I know it doesn't work like a breath controller, but it shouldn't work like that? And why can't we use the Modulation wheel for that?
I think that Take On Me melody is a combination of the two. :-) The notes in question are, I think, Bb Bb Bb F Eb G G G F G F. Thanks for demonstrating this!
Hey benn, recently discovered your channel and learning a lot from your videos. Would you suggest ExpressiveE Touche or TEC Breath Controller? which do you think is better for a person who has never played a wind instrument in his life.
I suppose you can connect the inputs to different parameters, such as pitch bend by biting or something, but it can't make the notes. Then again, it outputs midi data from 0 to 127 so if you can, for instance, make something that would translate that data to (midi) pitch with for instance MAX. You could make midi with it, but the core functionality is probably modulating parameters.
Nice! However, while the breath control part sounds great, the attacks (on the winds, at least) are all too similar for it to sound real. Is there any way to address that?
At 8:25 I think the sound needed a little filtering. Too tinny sharp to the ears. But, I understand you're basically experimenting a bit while also demo-ing. if understood correctly.
any midi breath/mouth device should be map-able 2 a synth altho i've nvr touched Volcas. If you look at the tabs on the graph window after 2:00 I'll show you the four analog values you get to play with, if your synth supports that many options. I use vital, but try right clicking on ur synths knobs/or daws knobs 2 c if there is a midi option
Daamn dude, you just gained a subscriber with a 6 year old video all because of that giant steps solo :D
As a wind player with access to samples but no access to the myriad wind instruments I DIDN'T learn how to play, this literally brought me to tears. I need one of these SO bad.
When reviews become very good music. Outstandingly presented in entertaining yet thoughtful way.
I'm on the point of purchasing the breath controller, however; not only you demonstrated its potential but also on a 'killer' jazz standard "Giant Steps", which is not for the faint hearted 😊. Well done👏👏👏👏👏
This seems super useful. Happy Birthday :)

Great stuff! Both of the Take On Me riffs are correct - they are played at different points in the song. Love from Norway

Awesome. Never would have imagined combining beer and composing. The breath controller is pretty cool too, lol.
Man those libraries are so much more real with that. So good.
Just great! Well used with the modular too! I have my own demo of this coming out pretty soon... been working on it far too long. You really know what you are doing!
Holy shizzles! Looks like beer and Giant Steps mix well together.
I swear to god you sell me on every product you've demo'd thus far and it's making my wallet SWEATY

Is this sold in the states? Can they sent it from Europe? Thanks

Excellent! Great Sax & clarinet chops!
I have a BC-3
(I live in the Ga forest too)
Most entertaining music tutorial I've seen so far :)
HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY 👍
Haha I've had the same quandary about the Take On Me riff, I think they might possibly be alternating between the two. Anyway, great video, thank you!
I would also love to see how you use vocoders in your setup!

Happy Birthday Benn!
Hard to imagine that every DAW user doesn't have one of these. I'm getting one, in part of this vid. Thanks man.
guess what, not everyone can afford this easily or would simply spend that money on something even more useful ;)
That's awesome ! Can we use it afterward to re-write an automation once we made a melody ? Thank you !
I think I would love this for realtime changing of synth parameters. Yes please :)
at 2:03 i was like "HELL NO NOT ANOTHER UNISON CHORD PACK AD", at 2:04 i was like "oh, never mind“ 🤷🏻♂️
Always wondered what those breath controllers looked & worked like, weird but cool.

Damn giant steps… didn’t expect that 😂
dude this things awesome
For a guy who could'nt play sax, you sound amazing!
Really Interesting gear.
Cool stuff, thanks for sharing. I'm curious if you've had a chance to demo the Hornberg HB1 and how you think it compares to the TEC.
can i use this controller with my fantom o6 directly without computer use for live programme
Color changes around 1:48 and at that EXACT moment I hit the "like" button. Cool effect. Great video. What's going on with the french horn for example, it sends Midi Note-On and then follows up with a moving CC for amplitude?
That's actually not intentional. I just decided to use natural lighting and the sun kept peaking out. :)
I only just realized this thing existed so to find review by someone I hold in such high regard is simply perfect! Thanks a lot Benn. Now does it work just as well with other libraries as the SWAM / Samplemodeling stuff?
Omg.. I love you for making this video.. please can we have more reviews (focused on SM instruments)? How about the string ones??
Great review. Great humor and talent. Love it.
Fantastic ! I am planning to buy it, but cannot decide between the simple Breath controller vs Breath and Bite controller. Bite controller is more expensive. Do you think it is neccessary ? I cannot play any wind instrument if that matters :) Thanks

So, Benn, Will you taking this toy out in the live-acts. Or do you think is it playable on live-acts?
Sounds great on the brass and woodwind instruments...
not so much on the synths.
Isn't the aftertouch key for that? I know it doesn't work like a breath controller, but it shouldn't work like that? And why can't we use the Modulation wheel for that?
I salute you too R2D2!!
at 5:40 I think it's the second one
also happy birthday
amazing playing mate
Holy shit god darn it! I'm buying this thing!
what an amazing tool! does is also work with the deepmind you got over there?
I think that Take On Me melody is a combination of the two. :-) The notes in question are, I think, Bb Bb Bb F Eb G G G F G F. Thanks for demonstrating this!
Could you please tell me, what kind of a dsp board you used.
THX for many information about this Controller.
Really interesting, enjoying your videos immensely, great ideas and all well worth exploring. Thanks
Hey benn, recently discovered your channel and learning a lot from your videos. Would you suggest ExpressiveE Touche or TEC Breath Controller? which do you think is better for a person who has never played a wind instrument in his life.
Would be interesting to have formants capture embedded, like a talk box.
Bro, how to you set this to work on FL, kontakt? there's literally no video tutorial on how to setup, tweak and setup the midi stuff with the bbc2.
Amazing!
Next step: Add a shoulder-shrug sensor. lel
Stupid question... can this control pitch , make midi notes? or "just" modulation stuff
I suppose you can connect the inputs to different parameters, such as pitch bend by biting or something, but it can't make the notes. Great video. I've been interested in trying one of these TEC breath controllers. Off topic question, but what breed is your dog? I like him. :D
Nice! However, while the breath control part sounds great, the attacks (on the winds, at least) are all too similar for it to sound real. Is there any way to address that?
Nice observation. I am wondering the same.
Can I Connect a motif xf directly????
Is that axolotl thingy using pd?
Wow, I need this!
Kettel! +1!
Lol, casually playing giant steps
Forget Aha! - have you tried doing the James Bond Theme, yet?!! :P
this is rad
i want to work with you bro. your pretty good
Damn 230 euro's is just expensive man but I need it.
At 8:25 I think the sound needed a little filtering. Too tinny sharp to the ears. But, I understand you're basically experimenting a bit while also demo-ing. if understood correctly.
I love what you are doing but the French horn sound sucks
Why do you look like Brad Paisley
Mahalos from Hawaiia

Great product at a terrible price.
What kind of breath controller do I need to control an analog synth and some Volcas?
any midi breath/mouth device should be map-able 2 a synth altho i've nvr touched Volcas.
