This is NOT O'Donnell's Lament or Caoineadh Uí Dhomhnaill as it's known in the original Irish. This is another lament commonly called "O'Rahilly's Grave" which honours the poet Aodhagán Ua Rathaille. Both beautiful pieces.
I have been playing this on a whistle for years with a cellist and violinist to do the drones. When I first heard this it knocked me right out of my socks. Beautifully done. A lesser perfection. 5 stars all the way.
+ralphyboy25 Haunting is exactly the right word. This song has haunted me at times ever since I first heard it. There is something strangely unforgettable about this particular tune, even though it is under two minutes and very simple in its construction. I read somewhere that the ancient Celts believed that there were three kinds of music---music to make you laugh, music to make you cry, and music that casts a spell to steal away the heart of the listener . . . Into which of these categories does this song fit, do you think?
+Andrea S. Hello! Someone else who has felt that haunting sensation. Hearing this the first time, I became totally enthralled. So much so, that I bought the full CD the very same day. For me, this music definitely falls in the "casts a spell to steal away the heart of the listener" category.
+Andrea S. I think it was meant as a 'caoineadh' as it was a lament to the beginning of the passing of the Gaelic order in Ireland. I can see, though, how you can also put it in the 'suantraí' category.
Fine. I'll listen to this again. needed to cry today anyway
What a lovely melancholy tune and played so beautifully. Thank you.
This is incredible.... goes to the very roots of your soul...
also the tune used for I have wandered in Exile

My mom used to use this song to lull me to sleep with her violin when I was a baby. It's sentimental to me
good Mom!
anda sangat beruntung
The great musicians know how to get to the heart and soul of a melody, and to make full use of their instrument. Eileen Ivers does so here. Wonderful.
