    Think I saw something recently that said they were a knitting device, bit like those French Knitting bobbins you made as a kid with a cotton reel and 4 pins ?

      Yes, that is a popular theory, although there are many others. I can't see the investment being worth it for something that could be made easily like the French knitting bobbins that you mention ( I remember doing this as a child and we called it tatting I think).
      Another theory that seems credible is that it was used to encrypt and decrypt messages.
      I'm still waiting for someone to use it to prove that the Earth is flat ; ).
