Playing Outside - Side slipping - Outside Jazz Approaches

- Playing outside is a mysterious skill that many improvisers go looking for to add surprise (or shock) to their solos. One fairly easy approach to playing outside is called side slipping or side stepping and that is what I am going to go over in this lesson.
How to play outside is a question of choosing material that is away from what you are playing over and also working on good ways to get outside and to get back inside in a melodic way. Sideslipping is a great approach for more melodic outside ideas.
The lesson has a few exercises and some theory, but also some outside jazz licks,

Excited to learn more about outside playing... It's something that I wanted to add to my solo-repertoire for a long time
+johann meister Great Johann! I hope you van put it to use!
I have almost none musical theory experience, but your videos help me out and i trying to imply jazzy licks into my metal playing. Thanks Jens!
+Ovimpendingdoom That's really cool! Great to hear that you can use the video's!
Always loved Jazz playing, but i could never sound like a Jazz player, hopefully some day i will manage.
Ovimpendingdoom I am sre you will if you keep at it and listen to jazz
Great lesson Jens, really well done, thank you!
+Ulli Mueller Thank you Ulli! Glad you like it!
Thanks Jens! Great lesson!
Glad you liked it!
Thanks for this lesson, i've heard many players do this and this has really cleared things up
Thank you! I am glad you found it useful! 👍
I learn something new all the time in jazz guitar. Would never have thought of doing this. Many thanks!
+Jason Brayshaw you're welcome Jason!
this one was especially helpful, so true that practicing this is easier over static harmonies
Yes it makes much more sense if you don't have to resolve before the chord changes every bar :D
Thanks, Jens! Great 60's style jazz vamp, too! EDIT: I love the inside outside inside parts!!!! Thanks, again, Jens!!!!
This stuff is new to me but your explaining it really well.
So much fun to be had :)
You're very welcome! I am glad you like it! 🙂
@@JensLarsen Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks Jens!
Glad you like it 🙂
Hej Jens. I eksemplet med Ab dorisk, har du skrevet at det er det samme som en F durskala. Bare et heads up, så du kan få det rettet.
+Thomas Vammen Jensen Tak Thomas! Jeg kan faktisk ikke rette i videoen, men Jeg kan fikse det i PDF og på mit website. ☺
Great Jens!! Thanks!!
+Diego Cavalli You're welcome Diego!
you are one of the finest teachers...the way you explain things make it seem obtainable ...and you are a killer player...thanks !
+scott b You are very welcome! I am glad you found the video useful!
This sounds amazing too - do you know any artists who do this a lot for guitar? It sounds Cosmic
Most jazz and fusion guitarists do this. The king of playing outside would probably be Allan Holdsworth. Check out his solo on "The devil take the hindmost"
when you show the Ab Dorian scale it says ( in fact an F major scale) surely it ought to say an F# major scale ( or a Gb major scale) ?
Yeah, that's just a typo
@@JensLarsen Oh I know. I just thought you might not have spotted it.
Thanks, really helpfull!
Glad you like it 🙂
Thanks for the lesson. Question - shouldn't the key signature of Gm7 have an Eb in it?
You're very welcome! Well Yes and no, the key if G minor has two flats, but Gm7 is not a tonic chord 🙂
Gotcha. So the tonic here is F major or D minor?
@@Ubersil It's Gm dorian mode so yes 2nd mode of Fmaj
interesting i have a similar approach i think this is more structured though! I
Side slipping is a very common device to play outside so that is not so surprising 🙂
Yesterday I tried to play outside (I composed licks in Guitar Pro)
but everything what I created sounds awful and I dont know why
probably I am doing something wrong
+Opiekun Dps Patience is important when learning
+Jens Larsen I have another problem which I discovered yesterday
Basic three major scales are ionian, lydian and mixolydian,
what happens when we mix them together?
We get nine-point scale c,d,e,f,f#,g,a,a#,b
How to play under major chord C major using this scale?
Which of these steps will be the fifth/dominant?
F# or g (which is the sixth' in this scale)
Which of these steps will be the fourth/sub dominant?
F or f#(which is the fifth ' in this scale)
Opiekun Dps That's just a scale with some passing notes. You are better off trying to get good at playing C major scales and understanding what a key is so you don't run off with unimportant synthetical constructions like this.
Don't mean to sound harsh, but you are potentially wasting your time by getting lost in pseudo theory with this.
+Jens Larsen "...scale with some passing notes".
Passing notes...but if I play in lydian ,passing note is f
and if I start play in ionian then f# become passing notes...
The same with sounds b and ais .
Right now I dont have guitar so ,I spend time on theory :)
Then spend time on analyzing music not coming up with vague constructions. You will learn more...
Cool!
Been trying to figure this out for a while. My ears are picking up on it. I think I hear a lot of players ascending in key and descending outside.
I think that is not something I would make a rule 🙂
@@JensLarsen I'll keep that in mind. Probably feels a bit cliche once you're able to jump in and out of key without thinking too much about it.
i don't get it. 2:00 why is an Ab dorian scale a F major scale? isn't it F locrian?
No, that's just a type, it should have said Gb major scale. I probably just copy pasted the text from the Gm example?
Jens Larsen thank you for your quick answer
You're very welcome Florian!

PALMA DE MALLORCA
I want to learn how to play faaaaaar outside.
+SwordsHeldHigh Then you should start to practice in the woods! ☺️
dude has a scrunchy. Wonder if he studied with Regi?
+subcinco I didn't. Who is Regi?
+Jens Larsen i'm talking about Regi Wooten, Victor's brother. Also know as the Teacha. He uses those and you can usually identify his proteges by the scrunchies as well. Check him out. Thank you for your videos. good stuff
Thanks! I will have a look
