I would give this developer a month or two. Maybe this is because Battle Princess Madelyn is the sort of game I look forward to nowadays. Good 2D/2.5D action games in this era are what I go for most, and here's hoping they get the story mode right and address all of the complaints.
Saw this on Steam, and was tempted to get it. It at least got my curiosity up. I didn't, figuring sooner or later, I'm sure to find a review of it. Might go for it, at least for the arcade mode, and hopefully, have them fix the story mode soon since sounds like they're working on it. As for your question, guess it depends on how broken the game is.
Was looking forward to this. Hearing you describe that swamp level made me angrier than it should have. Think there's a window that's a bit relative to the scope of the game they'd need to stay within to keep the players engaged before they move on to another game and stop caring. If it's a large RPG with a game breaking bug i'd imagine it would need to be in a couple months since people wouldn't want to start the game so they don't play for hours and lose progress. A game like this can probably go 6 months or maybe longer since it has another mode. No Mans Sky got a lot of crap but seems to have come around after some updates but after all this time i would expect just to get it in a sale or something. Bayonetta PS3 had really bad performance issues when it launched so I ended up trading it for the 360 version and 100%'d it. The patch to fix the ps3 version didn't come for several months i think. Killzone 2 had a very annoying thing with the aiming where there was lag when you moved your reticule and that was fixed right away since online play would have been annoying with that in place; probably wouldn't have even started playing online had it kept that.
I never even consider it. I usually hold back on buying games until I see what others say. If they say its rotten and I was on the fence about it, it's a no go for me. If they come back and say its fixed, I might bite.
Bought this game today on steam for 1.99 dollars, I wanted it since I saw it on a Gamesack episode but now that I have played it... Well, it is disappointing, it's neither a ghost and goblins nor a metroidvania game. Even Shantae is more entertaining than this. Art is fine, controls are fine... I guess (I have an xbox controller so it's not the best controller for this game) but the game is repetitive an boring. It's a nice addition to my game library but I don't think I'm going to play with it so much. Thanks Cyril for the review.
I'll give a dev all the time they need. NEED being the important word. If you are transparent about your practices and keep me updated on what you're working on, take all the time you need; it's understandable that not all flaws will be able to be fixed in even, say, two months. It took a while for Final Fantasy 14 to finally find its footing. But now it's super successful and fun as far as I know (I don't play MMOs, can't judge). In a similar vein to Madelyn there's Slain, a videogame that came out with terrible reviews, but was wholly rehauled. So long as you are actually WORKING on it, take all the time you want. I'd be angrier at a flaw being fixed in two weeks, if it was in bad faith (like abusive microtransactions or locked features) than I'd be at a genuine flawed passion project taking a full year to be finalized and reach its expectations. For example, I have to admit that, although I love Lab Zero Games, but I wish they had delivered on everything they promised for Skullgirls, before they started working on Indivisible (which, despite myself, I REALLY look forward to).
I hope this game pulls "Slain" and irons out the kinks, this looks promising. QOTD: This is an interesting question. I don't think I've encountered a game that is in such a desperate state for fixing when I got my flippers on it. Thanks to my backlog and me playing one game at a time for sake of story immersion, I often get to games at least a week after launch, some times few YEARS after. Heck, even Mass Effect 3 was something I didn't get to until about a week after they re-did the ending (and it wasn't intentional, mind). However, I think I could be very lenient in such a case. If the devs are honest and vocal on what they're about to do - so that folks know to wait for a patch - I can wait. I mean, I already mentioned my backlog, it's not as if I'm running out of games to play. And if the dev is a small indie studio, I even might be there cheering them on, towards the goal!
Hm, we’ve been playing the story mode. Seems we shoulda gone for arcade mode instead! I think 6 months max to fix glaring issues, any longer and I won’t come back to the game. Great review as always! -Ratter Tatter
I'm not sure why it shipped this way. It can definitly be fixed, but the small fixes might throw off the balance of later sections and bosses to where you would basically have to go through polishing again after rebalancing it which is terrible. You don't want to polish twice.
I've got the fixed version, which I'm sure you've played by now. They just dumped the story mode entirely and concentrated on the arcade mode, which does its best Ghouls 'n Ghosts imitation but still has problems. The game still likes dropping you in pits, it still uses a lot of whoop-dee-doo lighting effects that obscure the screen, and it now has a time limit which frankly is way too stringent. Run out of time and you instantly run out of lives. And interest, judging from my experience.
Looks fun. I think I'll wait until its on sale and see how well they fixed the issues. My current GnG clone go-to is Cursed Castilla (Maldita Castilla EX). How does the arcade mode of Battle Princess Madelyn compare to that? QotD: Depends. If it is an indie developer, I'm more likely to give them some time. If EA or another AAA studio comes out with a PoS in desperate need of a patch, it pisses me off more. They have the budget for testers,. They simply decided it would be cheaper to use their customers as bug testers and I won't stand for that. But with indie developers it is understandable that their (likely volunteer) beta-players would miss a lot more and so I give them some slack. Even then I won't purchase the game until I hear that the issues are fixed at least to the point where I'll be okay if they stop working on it. But with AAA titles, I won't buy their game if I think they are trying to skip out on paying bug testers and are using paying customers to do the job instead.
I personally don't give them ANY time. Every game should be extensively tested and 100% finished at release. The only reason they dont have to do this is because of digital distribution. Back when all games were on physical media you'd never get away with having a broken or unfinished game. Personally I don't understand deadlines for game releases. Put them out when they're done, or don't put them out at all. I have no patience or consideration for putting out bad products. Our money can be immediately accessed by companies when we buy their stuff. They don't have to wait and hope that we deliver on our end of the bargain
I would definitely be curious to see what the sales are like for both the Wii U and PS Vita versions. I love that those systems are still getting some love from developers, even if they are just ports.
@@DefunctGames I really want this game to sell well on these two platforms, but to be honest I don't expect this, but I'm still happy to see that the game will go to Wii U instead of simply canceling that version (Yooka-Laylee / Bloodstained), it's really seeing that there are still companies that care about Wii U and Vita, unfortunately here in Brazil a Nintendo Switch is very expensive and Wii U has been my only game option for a long time, I'm happy to be able to dust the console with this game Of course ... I could play on the PC, but I think the Wii U can provide me with a more traditional experience similar to the Ghost'n Goblins of Sega Genesis, besides using the Wii U GamePad is a great bonus, I can play lying down on the couch or in bed and even in the bathroom xD
Depends on the game I guess. Example i did not give no man sky long at all. Still refuse to go back to it I don't care how "good" it is now. But I gave mass effect andromida a really long time... Maybe because I really wanted to like that game...sadly still hate it. And best looking game of 2018? Did you not play spider-man or octopath? Those games looked so good. Especially octopath that game was beautiful.
"Best looking" is hard to nail down, especially when there are so many art styles. I believe I mentioned that it was among the best looking games of 2018, not that it was the single best, and I stand by that. Spider-Man looks incredible, and so does Octopath. As far as retro-themed pixel art games go, this is easily one of the most stylish I've seen in ages. Great use of lighting and other special effects to give a richness to each part of the world.
@@DefunctGames oh yeah I ment to edit my above statement and edit that out. I watched it again later and caught the "ONE" of the best looking games part so I ment to edited that out guess I forgot my bad. My issue isn't that this is a hard game, I want it to be tough. It's supposed to be tough. But what I don't want is an unfair game where you get knocked into a bottomless pit by enemies you can't predict and fire that comes off screen. I thought I made that clear in the review, but if not, that's my complaint.
I just don't understand why your subscriber base is so small. It needs to grow as you put plenty of effort into creating solid content.
quality > quantity
What I really don't understand is how the developers test the game and don't see these issues?
