I bought this pretty much blind and to me this is amazing! I started playing last night and I couldn’t put it down...something really resonated with me and this title, and very few games these days do that. Let’s hope it holds to til the end. Best sidescrolling adventure game? Hmmm, hard one, Ori and the Blind Forest or Hollow Knight perhaps. At least one of the best I’ve played in recent years, oh and The Messenger is also a modern classic.
I've been digging Blasphemous. Aggelos was a great Castlevania/Wonder-Monster Boy/Metriod homage. Metamorfose S isn't bad either if you can get past the art style and gaming engine.
This has been on my radar for several months, I'll be picking it up soon. I'm encouraged that they still make the sort of games I would have begged my Mom to buy me back in 1990-91.
This looks really cool. Nice shoutouts to Faxanadu, Cadash, and Wanderes from Ys. I see someone already mentioned the audio issue haha. QOTD, Castlevania SOTN.
Aggelos is on Switch to, and Now I have sunk time into it, 80% done sao far, I gotta say, this game is 10/10. I am loving it so much. It is liek my 2 favoritre retro games, Zelda 2 mixed with Wonder Bor MONSTER WORLD metroidvanias. It does everything so well. It did not seem likke too much when i fired it up for 10 minutes ro jump around and see what was up. but once I got into it a couple hours, holy crap it is so good. The boss battles are so expertly crafted, hard but fair and very clever and strategic. And the dungeons are amazing, puzzling just enough how to get through them. I am in the last 1/4 of the game now and I got mad BONE for this game.

I have just got the PS4 physical version of this game and so glad I did. It reminds me a lot of one on my favourite games o the Master System Wonder Boy in Monster Land.
This looks pretty good and I'll add it to my steam wish list but it's reminded me that I haven't replayed Wonder Boy in Monster World for decades! Also I never actually got around to playing Monster World IV (The one where you play as a girl and was only released in Japan I think) so I finally started tonight. Looking really good so far.. QOTD: Has to be Dragon's trap, and the recent remake was sublime! I really liked Popful Mail on Sega CD as well but it got to a point where it was too damn hard, even though I was cheating with emulation save points. Maybe I should try again soon.
IDK. Enviromental and art detail look 16 bit, but the palete is limited to flat shadeless garish 8 bit. To me this looks really clashing, as if the authors either didn't care about artstyle consistency or simply didn't know where they were going with it.
Looks interesting. But I think I would get frustrated with the issues. Qotd Castlevania and Shantae if you count metroidvanias a side-scrolling Adventures
Qotd - favorite side scrolling adventure game would be... does odinsphere count? It's kinda like that with a bit more beat em up style. Ps, sorry for not seeing ur vids in a while. Ive been busy with other stuff. Glad to watch ur stuff again. Its great.
I just played it this weekend on PC. The thing with the unintended upthrust - I don't know about the console versions but on PC the game was unable to use the dpad. Had to use thumb stick. And the angles of thumb sticks are often set up in the plane of the controller and not on the ergonomic alignment of a user's hand. Fortunately, I have a controller that lets me swap thumb stick and dpad with the press of a button and even with a mediocre dpad, it was way more precise than a stick.
You called the controls loose a bit, i can't disageee more, they are so fluid and smooth, at least on switch. Maybe that's the issue? I get perfect control exactly what I want al the time with my Switch pro controller.
I find that I really hate controlling 2D games on the Switch, since the D-pads on both the Joy-Cons and Pro Controller are AWFUL. There have been so many 2D games that I disliked on Switch, only to go on and really enjoy them when playing them with a competent controller. It's also worth noting that, according to other commenters on this review, the developer addressed my complaints with the Switch and PC versions, but not the PlayStation 4 game that I played. I haven't verified this, but I have a hunch that the game you're playing now is not the version of the game I reviewed back in 2019.
@@DefunctGames I find that so strange, I hear about some hating hte D pad. Must be some how the way I naturlly hold it, I have had perfect control with D pad literally 100% of the time, on both my Pro controlers actualy too. Luck yme for sure ^^ i gotta recomend then, ou check out the 8Bitdo Sn30 pro 2 for all your switch D pad needs if the pro is not working for u. I love it alot too. I have 4 of those for their versatility, multiplayer on switch, bluetooth for nes and snes adapters, my pcs, etc.
The problem I have is that it doesn't work properly. It's the worst at registering diagonal directions and I have trouble even doing a simple thing like crouching by pushing down on the D-pad. It was to the point where I legitimately thought my controller was broken, but then everybody else came out of the woodwork to let me know that they are having the exact same problems. It's as if Nintendo forgot how to make a good D-pad.
Weird. And it plays differently on the other systems? You don't typically see that. Usually there's conformity between the different versions. Thanks for the information.
@@DefunctGames Hey, no problem! I love the "calmer" side of the gaming community! I'd love to make a channel, but I'm a middle aged dude who's more into playing casually and goofing off than being an expert. Also, the Switch version has frame drops in select areas. The Steam version is great, but I wish they optimized it for Linux. They optimized Blasphemous for Linux, so why not?
As somebody who could also be considered middle-aged, don't let that stop you. If you have something to say and don't see somebody else on this platform saying it, then speak up and let your voice be heard. There's certainly room for people who are just goofing off. Who knows, you may find it fun. I know I do. If you ever decide to create your own channel, let me know and I'll be one of the first to subscribe. Now if I could get a Wizards & Warriors retro trilogy released on PS4 I would be a happy camper. I can't get enough of these retro aesthitics game's......(If Done Right!) But $14:99 on PSN I'll wait till a flash sale! It looks fun but, I'll stick to Wonder Boy for now.
Hmmm! This looks a lot like Wonder Boy! May be worth giving it a try, even if the controls are not the best there are. As for the Question of the Day, my fave side-scrolling adventure game is Faxanadu. It was my introduction to Falcom as a gamedev, and it holds a special place in my heart because of that.
Played through this game last weekend. I fully expected to love it. I unfortunately did not. I can't really put my finger on why but even though I 100%'d it I never really enjoyed the gameplay. Great sprite work and music though.
Aggelos has Bird people init, therefore it is in fact in th Rick and morty universe.

The coins look like bullets, that would drive me nuts, but the game looks great, like a Sega Genesis game
For the price of this - it was worth every penny! So glad I took the chance - loved it! Map SUCKS though!

That jumping/thrust-up-left issue... it's absent on the Switch and Steam. It's a bug.
