Am at zone 6a in northern Arkansas, and growing Nelson, Elizabeth, and Chandler. All Northern Highbush varieties. Also, some of the Southern Highbush variety Legacy as well. Like you are talking about, the southern variety, has already bloomed while the Northern Highbush are still holding off somewhat. Thanks. Elizabeth seem somewhat twiggy, so I don't think I would ever go with them again, but they taste really good and are quite large fruits. You pick types. All of them are mid season bearing. All these varieties have some of the best flavors I have ever encountered. Thanks!

Good info. Trying my best to get my plants going strong. They are very finicky. Next spring they will be 3 years old so I'll have to see if worth the effort then. I have acidic soil yet these 5 plants seem to be begging for attention all the time. I may babysit next year some but at some point I'm done. You either want to grow here or not.
We bought a home this past spring in Braselton ga and have 3 huge blueberry bushes. At least 8 feet tall - how can I determine which variety they are. They really are great privacy screen right now
Jim, Last fall I started prepping just the planting holes where I was going to plant blueberries because the soil was a perfect PH of 7.0 Last fall I put about 5-6 cups of sulfur in the planting hole and mixed it thoroughly and covered it with wood chips. 2 weeks ago I planted my northern high bush blueberries. I plan on covering the entire drip line and all the space between on each of my 12 plants that are 6-7' apart with wood chips. Do I need to do anything different like fertilize them or just let them take there course.
And here I am in Rio de Janeiro without any chill hour picking fruits from my Biloxi, Misty and Emerald southerns and also from my Briteblue, Climax and Woodard rabbiteyes. I don’t know what chill hours really mean to those two ranges because they don’t seem to really need it here in the tropics.
I'm in Johnston County NC and I grow 5 different varieties so that don't come in all at once. Onslow variety seems to be more sensitive to frost. I lost a several blossoms from frost damage this year for the first time.

The best blueberries are the northern lowbush wild berries (small and sweet). Picking them is slow and tedious so you won't find many in the stores. Trader Joe, however, does sell some frozen...think they're from Canada.

My plants never went dormant last year. They started blooming in November and it was never below 50 before they bloomed.

If they don't go dormant then they don't need chill hours to wake. Super interesting

Actually in 2015 Georgia surpassed all states in blueberry production, we actually changed from the "peach state" to the "blueberry state"
The University of Georgia has been a big contributor to the varieties that are being grown in the south.

+gmaureen You are correct, and they are the best for you as well. Most are grown for frozen and processed food.
FYI Canada produces the 'best' wild blueberry's & the world's largest supplier world wide
I call B.S. on the "best" statement. Nothing beats the berries we have here in my area.
For me it's not the size of the berry that's most important, it's the flavor.
