You simply hit the target , man ! That 's what Tom G. Warrior is all about: Powerchords to gain maximum heaviness !! At any era it was his deadly guitarsound bursting out of the speakers that had this massive influence on his riffs and songwriting !! That 's why every note he's striking brings nothing but doom and destruction...as great as the Rhythm guitarsound of "Kill 'em all" works with their early stuff it would rather bury the grinding notes of Hellhammer (supernatural godz of heaviness) or, If you Like, the Power of "Morbid Tales" which IS totally different but also delivers His weirdness

Fun fact: obituary turns their tone knobs off on their guitars because they are huge hell hammer / celtic frost fans,,,u can tell on early material even in the riffing.

From a 2006 interview (Monotheist era, their last album):
Q: I [...] was wondering if you lower the tone knob on your guitar to get that smooth yet evil sounding guitar tone?
Tom: "Yes, I have the tone almost entirely closed."
He always did it and keeps on stating in said interview that whenever he gets to play guitar, first thing he does is turning down the tone knob.
