I still don't understand the ban on unthinking machines such as personal computers, except for the fact that PCs weren't even invented when the books were written and the only computers available, were bug enough to fill entire rooms and didn't have the computing power of today's children's toy
I'm not sure, but i doubt personal computer that have some kind of voice activation would be allowed like SIRI. I am sure
that would flout dangerously close to what considered banned in the Dune universe.
@@UtopianBroadcast1 Right, AI wouldn't be allowed or something like SIRI, Alexa or something similar, but, what about something as innocuous as a plain search engine function?
At the height of the Butlerian Jihad even simple electronic household appliances were all destroyed because they took away from humans. So with that in mind you can imagine how a personal computer would be considered.

The fear and hate against machines were so big that people took it out on any machine they could get their hands on, even mundane ones.
*spoilers* I kind of like that the thinking machines were not entirely destroyed during the Butlerian Jihad and in fact made a come back in the later books of the original 6 books, and also in the books that were written after Frank Herbert's death. Eventually both humans and machines bonded to create a more stable relationship. All though of course at that point in the Dune timeline, intelligent life was no longer limited to just humans and thinking computers.
