I understood some of the mature themes of death, but I had a poo kid brain, so most of the references flew right past me. I used to watch old 90s Nick cartoons on there such as "Ren and Stimpy" and "The Angry Beavers", and I enjoyed them a lot! Ah, good times! 😌
Funny, most of these episodes were aired in their entirety on Nickelodeon in Australia except for one time when the second half of Sven Hoek was actually replaced by circus midgets one night.
It's been so long since i saw them in airing (reruns technically) but i may vaugly remember the part with the timecode and ren acting psychotic when i watched it at midnight around 2012-13 From a fellow aussie.
Me too. Very much. BleuEri: Stimpy moves with Ren into a coffin and things seem nice. Then a worm comes over and asks to eat dinner there. After he finishes, you see the fleshless husks of Ren & Stimpy - their eyes and brains are gone. The worm then leaves to go eat more people. I never liked the show because I thought it was too gross. But that ending legit horrified me for years.
@@youisiaint I didn’t remember any of the episode before that scene as a kid or what the circumstances were, but I will ALWAYS remember the ending, which horrified me and taught me that worms eat human bodies, which I didn’t know or (at that age) need to know. For years I wondered why Ren and Stimpy didn’t put up a fight and kick out the worm. Just one little gag to end the episode mildly traumatized me for years.
8:56 I actually watched Ren's Bitter Half a lot when it would come on in the early 90's. To be honest, it was one of the most memorable episodes for me, and looking back on it, I understand *why* it stuck in my brain so well. To be honest, the scene where Ren starts to change really unnerved me as a kid. Evil Ren was just so uncontrollably bad, too, that the whole episode always set me on edge. Man, that's pretty wild tho that the episode card, that I probably hadn't seen in over 20 years, jogged such a clear and vivid memory.
My personal theory of why the Anthony episode was banned was because since Anthony’s dad was based off John’s own dad, and John’s dad ended up personally chewing him out for embarrassing him and “making him look soft” in the episode once he saw it (Source: the Father’s Day page on John’s blog), John may have felt bad for that and told Nickelodeon to take it down so his dad wouldn’t have to see it and be embarrassed by it again.
Interesting stuff in the video. I had no idea the series was treated so badly. I live in the UK and some years ago bought the 'complete' DVD boxset for Seasons 1 and 2. Not only was Man's Best Friend not included, which was weird because it was mentioned prominently on the cover, but in the episode Out West the whole "Lord Loves a Hanging Song" was cut, the episode ending abruptly after about 8 minutes. Also the 3rd DVD set, covering late S4 and all S5, was never released here at all
Thank you for your perspective. Good job on the presentation. I liked how you got all the important stuff together. I would like to hear your theories on specific episodes
This show was for adults and never intended for kids, AS or even Cartoon Network would be better companies for John K to work at, but Nickelodeon was/is a heaven for pedophiles, he absolutely felt at home there.
Just like the other comment said, yes, the only reason why A Visit to Anthony, Eat My Cookies, Sven Hoek and Double Header (I think I missed one or two) were banned because of the copyrighted Raymond Scott tracks.
Sven Hoëk aired in its entirety for at least a year before it was ever censored. I was there, I saw it with my own eyes many times (including the “gouge your eyes out”). If it was banned it was near the end of the rerun phase in the 90’s. Also “Haunted House” is a masterpiece and the bloody head gag was my favorite thing to quote with my mom for years. Censoring is just so wrong :/
There was an episode that was banned from reruns a few years after it aired; the one where Ren and Stimpy are taught about the evolution of life and the dinosaurs by a museum curator. Both Ren and Stimpy would also portray various prehistoric animals. From single celled organisms, fish, dinosaurs, to prehistoric mammals. Also a short lived meme came from this episode Why was this episode banned, you may ask? Was it about them explaining evolution (even if they're not being serious)? No It was a something that the Curator said while describing the various (and obviously inaccurate) ways the dinosaurs went extinct; while it seems he said "Peruvian Mud Flood". Some parents heard that as "Peruvian Buttplug". So some complaints were made and the rest was history. You can see it on complete series dvds, but I don't see coming back to TV anytime soon.
I’m assuming that Nickelodeon is also scared of catching some lawsuit or losing money because parents nowadays can get pissed at anything in a cartoon.
@@cupid2098 What do you mean nowadays? Parents getting pissed at anything in a cartoon has always been a thing, even in the 90s. Just look up how this show as well as Beavis and Butthead were on the news due to how controversial they were.
i think one of the most disturbing and mean spirited eps is the one where Ren loses all of his teeth, like he couldn't get a break that entire time. first, he's annoyed by stimpy brushing his teeth and then ren is like i don't need to do that and then he looks in the mirror and his mouth is so disgusting the mirror breaks and then the next day he's having second thoughts like maybe he should do it and actually brush his teeth and he looks again and then his own teeth shatter and he feels all shamed and humiliated and hopeless, because now it's too late, you only get 1 set of adult teeth and now they are gone and overnight all his teeth are gone and then he only has stinky gumholes and nerve endings and then there are flies eating crap. . literally in Stimpy's catbox, eating cat turds and the smell of ren's mouth is so offensive that the flies almost get sick from it and they yell at Ren and then ren has to pluck out all the nerve endings and that must have been excruciating so he can put them under his pillow for the fairy to give him money but then the fairy is just a dirty old man and he's also a scumbag and is all like "oh i have no more money. . whatever, i'll take them anyway and just leave some lint. . it's good enough for him" and then ren is left with nothing and it's so mean spirited. . . and yeah, it has a clear message, take care of your teeth, but still, the way it hammers it home has stuck with me all my life. John K must have had a terrible childhood.
Ren and Stimpy makes my M.D. friends laugh. Their kids are not allowed to watch the show, not so much because of the double entredes involving scatology, homosexuality, etc. It was because their kids were asking too many questions.
There's nothing wrong with the word "midget" any more than there is with the word "dwarf", and if anything the former is superior because it doesn't cause any confusion as to whether you're discussing folkloric spirits that resemble humans or humans that happen to be significantly shorter than normal. People just arbitrarily decided "midget" was offensive about a decade or two ago and began boldly asserting it until they could force the culture at large to pretend that it was and stop using it, and now "dwarf" is being claimed as likewise offensive because euphemism treadmills are always that way.
Tbh I think man's best friend was unjustified. The tobacco references flew over my head as a kid (I owned the dvd of season 2 as a kid) and I thought it was standard ren and stimpy. I get why you'd find it disturbing, but I never did.
And, didn’t rockos modern life had cigar smoking. and even in a games animation episode, had stimpy smoking a cigarette and it even appears in this video.
This was a really interesting watch. I actually agree with most of your verdicts. The only one I kinda disagree with on is ‘Ren’s Retirement.’ I think the episode is more case sensitive, especially with all the disturbing imagery. I think some people could handle it well and others could not. If I had to guess as to why ‘Bell Hops’ was banned, I would guess it’s because of the excessive use of severed heads, especially towards the end. After looking banned episodes, I found a list of episodes that were either censored or banned. In it, I found a few other banned episodes that you didn’t mention. ‘Big Baby Scam’ was eventually pulled from airing for, from what I can tell, unknown reasons. The bath scene I can kinda understand being removed, as well as maybe the shot of Mr. Pipe being naked, but I don’t understand removing the entire episode. ‘Stimpy’s Fan Club’ was banned in some places for the extended scene of Ren planning to kill Stimpy. I’m not really sure if I think this is justified or not, but I’m leaning on the side of it not being justified. I also think it’s hypocritical to ban this episode, but not ‘Out West’ for the excessive mention of hanging. ‘Hermit Ren’ was banned for having dark subject material. I think this is unjustified because the episode displays everything in over-the-top and cartoony ways. ‘Prehistoric Stimpy’ was banned for having many inappropriate jokes and the use of the word “buttplug.” From what I remember, the episode wasn’t actually that bad. I think they could’ve just removed the mentioning of a buttplug and the episode would’ve been fine. ‘It’s A Dog’s Life’ was banned also for having dark subject material. I think this one is justified because the episode goes way overboard with the material it presents and doesn’t try that much to be funny about it. This was a really interesting subject to watch and discuss. I think this just further shows how much of an impact ‘The Ren & Stimpy Show’ has had on media and how we view it.
Tbh, if no one knows exactly why ‘A Visit to Anthony’ was banned, then I’d say it falls in the ‘Bell Hops’ category of being unjustified because of no reason being given by Nick. I don’t know if this is true, but I think the twin towers being destroyed in ‘Powdered Toast Man vs. Waffle Woman was shown in its own dedicated shot, so the episode could easily be edited to still show the city being destroyed. If that’s not true, I think simply showing the aftermath of their fight would be enough to get the point across. I’m not exactly sure how ‘Dog Tags’ could be edited to not show Ren attempting suicide while still keeping the story intact. Maybe it could just cut to Stimpy’s reaction and only briefly show Ren? IDK.
gatchy watchy entertainment bieber brothers being pretentious is when you try to act cooler or more knowledgeable than you are to impress and look more smart and important.
I don't understand why they wouldn't band It's A Dogs Life if they would ban other episodes for similar or even dumber reasons. That epsiode still sickens me.
i think some episodes haven't aired or removed on paramount plus in america because of the raymond scott music licensing which expired in the 2010s i heard and nickelodeon never bothered to renew it, yet its still available in canada and other places
Sven Hoëk and Ren Needs Help both just aired, and both in their entireties. I recorded them on my DVR about 2 days ago. As for Bell Hops, I don't think it was banned on its own, but it originally aired as part of an actual banned segment/story (I don't remember which one), and they never bothered to separate the two stories/segments. A similar thing happened with a Fairly Odd Parents story/segment that was banned because they were making fun of the British and their teeth. There was another separate story/segment of that episode as well, and it's just considered "lost", because it was never actually "banned", but also never separated from the banned story/segment either. I hope this is helpful. 👍
I saw all of these episodes on air when I was a kid, multiple times. Except Man's Best Friend since it never even made it to air. I always hated the Visit to Anthony episode. Most of the other episodes were pretty good and it's a shame they are gone. At least I have the DVDs.
Throughout this entire video i was thinking "What??? I've seen all these episodes and had no idea that they were banned" I grew up watching this with my dad and absolutely loved it
I remember a few other episodes not airing when I worked at night and watched it at 4-5 am on nicktoons. A few were Haunted House, In the Army, Scotsman In Space, Big Baby Scam, Dog Show, No Pants Day, Insomniac Ren, My Shiny Friend, School Mates, and Dinner Party
I never really thought it was a kids show anyway but I loved it seen em all ... have the toys and the bed sheets lmfao ..... Remember that episode where the hog jaws are on that plate in someone’s window and ren said I know what’s going to happen... there’s going to be a dog in the yard blah blah and he makes stimpy look again to be sure there’s no dog.... so he runs in and you hear him being shredded and stimpy peeks over the fence and says there’s no dog but there’s a baboon... listen. I swear that clip right there with his eyes peeking over creeped me out so bad I had nightmares for months...I’m almost 40 and it still creeps me out for some reason. Lol it’s odd because I’m sure I’ve seen much much much worse but yeah. It’s odd that they worry about the silliest things and stuff they let go scares the living shit outta kids. Lol
As controversial as Man's Best Friend was, that episode is tame compared to It's a Dog's Life an episode that's actually based on the banned episode and an episode that deserves to be rightfully banned.
@ The episode is disturbing, tasteless, unfunny and downright cruel. Some scenes were amusing and funny but the episode overall a mess, not to mention it showed a huge double standard on Nickelodeon's part.

People forget that cartoons, were originally made for adults at the beginning/end/ during intermissions of movies. Instead of censoring these episodes, why not just rate them appropriately, air them late night only, or give adults an adult channel for such things? One can also include efforts contained within Warner Bros. Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies, as well as Walter Lantz's cartoons. Don't buy the rights to show these works of art if you're going to chop them up, censor, ruin or even ban them! Show them in their entirety or don't buy them! By this ridiculously flawed corporate logic, Disney's brilliant Fantasia should never see the light of day, not only for the demonic Night on Bald Mountain scene, but also for making fun of both ballet and fat characters with Hyacinth Hippos' Dance of the Hours and for witchcraft and sorcery in The Sorcerer's Apprentice!
I like how the creator said (when asked if Ren and Stimpy were gay), 'What?, I don't know... that's their business what they do at night and not what the show is about' or some such thing. I appreciated the neutral take you had on this while also giving your opinion. It's a shame we live in a world where you have to qualify all that first, but a really good vid. End of scotch rant :D
I also heard him say something along the lines of "They're gay when it's funny and they're straight when it's funny". I can kinda see that approach being inspired by all the crossdressing scenes in some Bugs Bunny cartoons.
It depends on the type of person; but Svën Höek, Circus Midgets, A Visit to Anthony and Double Header were banned due to the Raymond Scott music. In fact, EVERY episode that contains Raymond Scott has been banned. Edit: I forgot to mention Eat my Cookies.

@@yourstrength1314 Yes...but I'll be ever grateful and thankful he created these 2 insanely brilliant characters.
Funny, most of these episodes were aired in their entirety on Nickelodeon in Australia except for one time when the second half of Sven Hoek was actually replaced by circus midgets one night.
It's been so long since i saw them in airing (reruns technically) but i may vaugly remember the part with the timecode and ren acting psychotic when i watched it at midnight around 2012-13
From a fellow aussie.
7:29 I like how your "die" lined up with Stimpy's realization coming to mind.
I thought John K. got fired due to his lack of making it to deadlines and contact with staff.
He was fired for that reason.
Yep, he was. The Man’s Best Friend episode was simply Nick’s opportunity to find a good excuse for firing him without doing it spontaneously
The end of Ren's Retirement terrified me as a kid.
What happened?
Me too.
@@NathanDav42 "Such a nice worm."
"Shut up."
But he was such a nice worm.
I was only 3 years old at a time, and I clearly remember seeing that one.
Also Hermit Ren, Prehistoric Stimpy along with it's sister episode Farm Hands were banned. So was Road Apples & No Pants Today
Also the 3rd DVD set, covering late S4 and all S5, was never released here at all
This show had such a deep impact on my fragile subconscious child mind...and I'm forever grateful😅❤
Sven and Stimpy in the litterbox is so hard to find but it's one of my favorite Ren and Stimpy moments

Thank you for your perspective. Good job on the presentation. I liked how you got all the important stuff together. I would like to hear your theories on specific episodes
Ren and stimpy was tame and a welcome respite when your own dad was like a real life ren and you lived in the crap side of town.
Sounds like you're speaking from experience.
What do you mean by that?
@@darth_autismo They’re either talking about their own childhood or John K.’s
I absolutely LOVED that art piece of them looking like a real dog and cat.
This show was for adults and never intended for kids, AS or even Cartoon Network would be better companies for John K to work at, but Nickelodeon was/is a heaven for pedophiles, he absolutely felt at home there.
I remember watching the Sven episode on Nickelodeon. I never knew it got banned.
Just like the other comment said, yes, the only reason why A Visit to Anthony, Eat My Cookies, Sven Hoek and Double Header (I think I missed one or two) were banned because of the copyrighted Raymond Scott tracks.
That was the real reason.
Ive been trying to figure out who made the music for years.
That's just.. wow
@@PremiumFuelOnly It's all just stock music except for a few specific Scott tracks.
I think they also have to pay Anthony.
7:50 My problem with this one is there is a spongebob episode literally titled ‘Dying for Pie’.
Also a short lived meme came from this episode
Why was this episode banned, you may ask? Was it about them explaining evolution (even if they're not being serious)? No
It was a something that the Curator said while describing the various (and obviously inaccurate) ways the dinosaurs went extinct; while it seems he said "Peruvian Mud Flood". Some parents heard that as "Peruvian Buttplug". So some complaints were made and the rest was history. You can see it on complete series dvds, but I don't see coming back to TV anytime soon.
I remember watching Man's Best Friend when it first aired.
What network did you watch it on
0:57 MTV latinoamerica: "are you challenging me?"
In Latin America MTV aired the adult party cartoon?
@@kittykittybangbang9367 yeah, all 6 episodes.
I love don’t whiz on the electric fence. How can they ban it.
Because Nickelodeon is full of idiots
I’m assuming that Nickelodeon is also scared of catching some lawsuit or losing money because parents nowadays can get pissed at anything in a cartoon.
@@cupid2098Yeah and they dont want them to get pissed at the Electric Fence!
Dentists across the land would love to screen that episode in their surgeries on repeat.
Hermit Ren shouldve been banned...he played with a corpse lol
A mummy, to be exact. LOL
I remember seeing that episode last year it didn’t bother me much
Ren and Stimpy makes my M.D. friends laugh. Their kids are not allowed to watch the show, not so much because of the double entredes involving scatology, homosexuality, etc. It was because their kids were asking too many questions.
It's nice to know that even doctors have a zany sense of humor.
The thing is, my bro..
Stimpy's a *FEMALE*
She's an american manx.
Anyone know the episode where Stimpy goes outside and hits his head on the moon? Then he has crater marks on his head, Lol. I love that one
That episode is called Marooned! It’s from season 1 I’m pretty sure :D
Sven hoek is my favorite episode
Tbh I think man's best friend was unjustified. The tobacco references flew over my head as a kid (I owned the dvd of season 2 as a kid) and I thought it was standard ren and stimpy. I get why you'd find it disturbing, but I never did.
And, didn’t rockos modern life had cigar smoking. and even in a games animation episode, had stimpy smoking a cigarette and it even appears in this video.
There were Tons of other episodes with cigarettes and tobacco smoking. Not just Man‘s Best Friend
Plus lawn cigar = dog turd
TeenNick has been airing these in full on thier late night NickRewind block, interestingly enough
TeenNick doesn’t air any of these he mentioned in this video.
IDK.
Nice video man ren & stimpy is my favorite show of all time
Double Header I can completely understand. Watching it now I can guarantee you its something that would have given me nightmares as a kid.

i think some episodes haven't aired or removed on paramount plus in america because of the raymond scott music licensing which expired in the 2010s i heard and nickelodeon never bothered to renew it, yet its still available in canada and other places
I’m talking about being banned in the main network, not it’s subsidiaries like MTV or Nicktoons.

3:06 No. “Bell Hops” was not pulled for no reason at all, it did air for a while actually up to 2002.
It's really very simple just like with John Kricfalusi's earlier efforts on Ralph Bakshi's redo of Mighty Mouse in Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures.
Disney animation sucks.

End of scotch rant :D
why is it a shame? most people who asked were gay themselves and said they related to the constant fighting and making up the characters would do.
I also heard him say something along the lines of "They're gay when it's funny and they're straight when it's funny". I can kinda see that approach being inspired by all the crossdressing scenes in some Bugs Bunny cartoons.
