How To Cook Camp Oven DAMPER - ( SIMPLE TIPS )

- I show you how to cook camp oven DAMPER the traditional way.
This is the same damper recipe that i have used for over 45 years.
When i first learnt to cook damper, it was damper wrapped around a green stick and cooked on the campfire.
I first learnt how to cook a damper in a fire when I started camping in Cubs as a young fella.
The damper recipe in this video is the same one from those days as a young Cub.
Today I still make the same damper recipe in the camp oven, but I add a few sultana's for a fruit loaf.
Add some jam and cream, and it tastes amazing.
Cooking a camp oven damper on the coals of the camp fire is a great way of starting any morning while out camping.
I would be very interested to know how you cook damper in the camp oven when you're out camping, and what ingredients you put inside your damper mix.
Bit of a city born and raised millennial here who's discovered a love of the bush and your videos are top-notch when it comes to getting out there mate. Thank you.

Gday mate,
That’s great some of my videos are giving you ideas of places to go.
The High Country is a fantastic place to explore.
Thanks for your reply and feedback mate.
Cheers Tim.
Just bought my first camp oven and going away in our caravan so can’t wait to use it to make this damper.
Gday mate,
That’s great you now have a camp oven.
The damper is so nice mate, plenty of jam and cream. Lol.
I also have another video about tips for people using a camp oven for the first time.
Thanks a lot for your feedback
Cheers Tim
The beaten up Billy is such a good touch. I still have my dads from when I was a toddler
G'day Ryan,
Thanks mate, it still boils water a treat. No need to replace it.
Thanks for your reply.
Cheers Tim
Fab base recipe Tim, Thanks. I put together some savory variations. I used wholemeal flour. 1. Add a cup of grated tasty cheese, a teaspoon of dry mustard and a pinch of mixed herbs. Yum. Savory version 2 Add the cheese as in the above recipe, then press out into an oval, In the centre of the oval add some crumbled feta cheese, mixed with a cup of super well drained silverbeet, or spinach and plenty of salt and pepper. Roll up the damper and press gently back to form a loaf. You could also add things like cooked chicken, cooked mince lamb, chopped ham, or sun dried tomatoes instead of the feta and sliverbeet mix. Only limited by your imagination!
Gday Fiona,
Your damper mix sounds really nice.
That’s one of the great things with making damper, you can add what ever you want.
They all taste great.
Thanks for your feedback.
Cheers Tim
I love this simple recipe, nicely done Tim 👍

Damper with jam and cream, that's pretty flash tucker. We only ever managed golden syrup back in the old days. Great vid mate, cheers. 👍
G'day Greg,
Yeah I've pretty much used jam and cream since my early days in Cubs. :-)
It's a wicked combination.
Cheers Batesy.
The old cockys joy (golden syrup), on a damper was a swagy’s delight if he was ever lucky enough to get some, that was pretty flash Tucker…
I must do this more often. Cheers, mate.
Gday mate

Yeah mate.
It’s simple to make.
Add what ever extras you like.
Thanks mate for your reply.

That's made me hungry... You've given me inspiration for breaky this weekend when I head out to Mafra. I always make sure to use a trivet in the oven so the damper base doesn't burn which I saw you did too and also good to try and make the damper small enough to not touch the sides of the oven again for the same reason.
G'day Stephen,
Sounds great mate, I'll be keen to hear how you go at Maffra this weekend.
Yeah mate, the trivet is the go. I use one with everything I cook in the camp oven.
Cheers Batesy.
This looks amazing! Can’t wait to try
G'day Michelle,
It is very easy to make and tastes amazing with jam and cream.
I hope your damper turns out well.
Thanks for your feedback.

I normally make the dough up the night before and keep it in a warm place overnight then in the morning it’s had time to relax and it’s expanded slightly like bread then I cook it like you did but my damper ends up fluffy and not so heavy in the stomach
G'day mate,
Sounds like an interesting way you make your damper.
Might be worth a try that way.
Thanks for your feedback.
Cheers Tim
Up Cape York for 2 months I cooked the damper directly in the coals, unforgettable times 🏃♂️🧗♀️🐗🦘🦎🕷🦂🦟🦟🦟
Great one 👍🏼
I put a block of chocolate in the middle and another chocolate bar is awesome once it melts through the centre
Great with a coffee
G'day mate,
Must give that one a go.
That sounds pretty damn good.

Well done again Tim,
True ausy, I do pretty well much the same as you have done and it always comes out good, depends on how much neck oil I have,
Cheers mate 🍻👍🇦🇺
G'day Amos,
Yeah to much neck oil as you say, could have a bit of an impact on how your damper turns out :-)
Thanks for your reply mate.

Chopped glazed gingers and for the liquid use ginger ale. Yum

Gday Justin,
Those few extra ingredients sound pretty good.
Might try them out.
Thanks for your reply mate.
Cheers Tim.
Here in the southern US. Thats basically how we make what we call biscuits. No not tea biscuits and such lol we call those cookies. Only real difference is the addition of baking powder. And usually use buttermilk. In the Appalachian mountains where I'm originally from, we would call what you made there "biscuit pone" usually done in a well seasoned iron skillet reserved for biscuit pone and cornbread. Otherwise biscuits are done on a pan and divided into fist sized portions. Looks good, always great to learn how others do things.
G'day mate,
Thanks heaps for your reply.
It's always interesting to hear others stories on how they do things.
Even more so, when your story on how you make your mix is coming from the US.
Thanks heaps for your reply.,
Very interesting.
Cheers. Tim.
Mate you're making me hungry! That looks so good. I'd love a savoury damper with cheese and bacon. I'm definitely a savoury man. Thanks for sharing your recipe mate!
That would be nice in a damper mate.
Bit of melted cheese would go alright.
Good thing about a damper, you can put what ever you want in them.

G'day Andy,
You must have not read the fine print about that trip. Lol
Next time mate.

I do it just like this mate, how you taught me. The only difference is a couple of times I left the sultanas out & sprinkled cheese over the top before cooking. Not too shabby
G'day Steve,
Thats ace mate.
I must try the cheese on the top some day.
A few people talk about that mix.
Sounds not to shabby at all.
Cheers Tim.
Simple but what a ripper! I'll have to give it a go I reckon.
G'day mate,
The damper i make in this video is pretty simple, but tastes amazing with jam and cream.

5th Nunawading Scouts. Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers. Specialising in caving/rock climbing.
@@The_Stoic_PhilosopherSH yeah cool mate.
I went through with 2nd Frankston. Scouting and Venture years. Hardly spent a weekend home.
Great years.
You can even go a bit flasher and make "scones" its just 3 parts SR Flour, 1 part cream and 1 part lemonade. Each cup of flour makes about half a dozen, you could probably even use beer.
G'day mate,
Yes, I had thought about making scones with the same damper mix.
In stead of one large damper, I thought of rolling 3 or 4 balls up and cooking those the same way.
Thanks for your feed back.
Cheers Tim.
Been putting honey and cream in mine since I was a scout

Honey and ice cream sounds really good mate.
