There is nothing more enjoyable then cooking on an open fire with a good quality cast iron camp oven. The meal you can create are unique and if done right absolutely delicious. However, there is a lot of mystery around how to season your camp oven correctly.
I have just received this new 9 quart camp oven from Campfire Australia which has been pre seasoned but I am going to season it today to show you how it is done.
Why season your camp oven?
Seasoning your camp oven is very important to do before you start cooking anything. Why is this?
It prepares the surface of the camp oven for cooking, creating a non stick layer on the metal. It also prevents the camp oven from rusting.
How to season your camp oven
You can either season your camp oven in an oven or a bbq at home of in a fire while you are camping like I am doing today.
Heat the camp oven in the fire. This ensures that any moisture is removed and expands the metal which will allow the oil to penetrate easily.
Lightly coat the camp oven in olive oil using a piece of paper towel. Make sure it is a thin layer and there is no pooling.
Return the camp oven to the fire placing it upside down to that the oil wont pool.
The camp oven will start smoking as the oil burns off. Let it heat for about 30 minutes then remove. Allow the camp oven to cool a little the repeat the process.
Once you have finished take the camp oven off and give it a very light coating of oil, making sure there is no pooling.
Using a oil spray would be ideal if you have one available.

I'm shopping for a camp oven and so glad I came across your video, I wasn't even aware you had to season them so thanks very much for the great, easy to follow video lesson.
Thank you so much for the feedback. I am glad I was able to help someone. When you season it out is best to use rice bran oil or peanut oil an it has a higher flash point. I didn't mention that in my video.
Hey love your Japanese safety boots ole mate LOL 😉🤠🤠🤠
Funny this just came up as I’m scrubbing the rust out of mine for a camping trip tomorrow! Was gonna search a video up! Cheers
Good on you mate, see google knows all. Hope you get something from it
Great video mate!!! Ive always had trouble keeping my spun steel camp oven seasoned. I might have to try doing it over the fire instead of in the oven! 👍
Give it a crack mate, if you do it in the oven, do it for at least an hour at 200 degrees. I have recently been informed that peanut oil or rice bran oil are better for seasoning due to the higher flash point which makes sense.
Great video mate. Love the edit
Thank you so much mate.
I bought a "Gabriel Gatè" camp oven for $10 at the op-shop. No idea if it's a quality one or not but it's fairly well used. I knew it had to be seasoned but wasn't exactly sure how. I already knew the most important part and that was to have the froffies ready to go. Thanks for the video.
Very good tutorial.
When I season a new oven the first meal I cook is one for the dogs, boiled up meat off cuts etc just in case there's still some of that new manufacturing taste left.
That's a good idea mate, thank you for the kind words.
Nice show thanks
No worries mate, glad you enjoyed it.
cheers mate, good info 👍
Thanks for watching mate
I put to much oil in mine , got a pool at the bottom whats the best way to fix that cheers
Pressure wash it off. Heat on the fire or BBQ again and spray or wipe oil on. Use some paper towel to wipe down after.
Nothing better than bunyip rump stew in the camp oven.
I reckon that's a 6 beer job, lol
Easy a six pack job mate, you cant rush perfection
A FROZEN portable fridge will make your outdoor life better
I bet it would.
