The person glorified by Dimash in the song is a Japanese, Yoshiko Yamaguchi who was born in Manchuria China. Since small, she went by the Chinese name of Li Xianglan; she had vocal training by an Italian soprano dramatist. She sang beautifully in Chinese, Japanese and Russian too. Later she had a successful career as an actress and singer in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the USA. At Hollywood she went by the name Shirley Yamaguchi. During the
war she acted in Japanese propaganda films. After the war the Kuomintang had her arrested for treason; the popular singer scorned by the Chinese community. Some Russian friends managed to locate her birth papers to show that she was a Japanese thus saving her from being executed by a firing squad. Instead a decision was made to deport her to Japan although she was China born. At the port, ironically the port's speakers were playing her songs before her ship departed for Japan. The original song is in Japanese titled "Ikanaide" sung by Koji Tamaki. She did return to China only 20 years later, as a member of the Japanese parliament. Before she died she did hear this song; she cried. Did you not notice that there was no clapping or smiling faces among the audience during the song? I suppose guilt and the memory of the shabby treatment accorded by the Chinese towards Yoshiko surfaced at the end.
